What is a twist out?

medussamedussa Posts: 12,993Registered Users
I keep seeing references to "twist set" and "twist out." I have an idea of what they are but can someone point to a website where I can see a picture of this?

If anyone here has done it, can you please post a picture? I want to try it. My hair is currently BSL when dry.

Thanks!

A twist out is when you put a whole bunch of two-strand twists throughout your hair(whether done on wet or dry hair), you let them air-dry, and then separate the twists and wear them out(as a twist-out).

Here's a pic of my twists:

And here's a pic of my twist-out from those same twists(really looks like a wash n go):

    /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fs211.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb133%2Fshyygirl_2007%2FFall%25202007%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26amp%3Bcurrent%3Dff1b4b05.jpg" class="Popup

Twist-outs don't always look like the above pictured, but mine did because I was wetting my twists(when I cowashed them), so when I took them out, they looked like that.

EK--Thank you so much. Your twists and twist outs look amazing. I am giddy with excitement to try this look. I'm a little apprehensive because my hair is tangle-prone. Do I follow my usual routine (leave-in condish and gel) before twisting?

Thanks, chica! When I twist, I use a leave in and cream or gel. I especially have to use a leave in because my hair tangles easily. No sooner do I detangle, it tangles all over again(grrrrr). But what styler used depends on how I want them to look. If I want a fuller twist(out), I use a cream. Not so full a look, a gel over the leave in. But, if I plan on doing CO rinses with the twists, it doesn't matter because whatever styler used will be rinsed out anyway. LOL!

Here's a better pic of what my twist-outs normally look like. I couldn't find a more recent pic, but this is from 2 yrs ago.

Okay. I think I know what I'm doing. I'm going to try them tomorrow morning. Let them dry and undo them.

I'll let you know how they turn out. Thanks again!

I forgot to ask, do I need to put anything on the ends?
  • eccentric_kurlzeccentric_kurlz Posts: 4,144Registered Users
I don't put anything on the ends. I just twist the ends around my finger until it coils to prevent it from unraveling.

Eccentric_kurlz - Your hair is fabulous!! I looked at your hair when you flat ironed it and with the twist out . It looks nice and healthy!!! When you went natural did you do a big chop or did you transition out of a relaxer????

Thanks! I transitioned for a long time(between 1.5-2 yrs) before cutting the last 3 or so inches off in August '03.

Oh my gosh EK, your hair is fabulosa! I just did a twist out on one of my girls, but it pales in comparison to yours. I love it with the headband. Do you do your own twists? And how long did it take? If I knew my girls would look like this when done (and untwisted) I'd do it no matter how long it took. Beautiful hair.

absolutely gorgeous. Your hair looks so healthy (straight and curly)

    Medussa,
please post your pics when you do the twist out. I've yet to do a good twist out. I can't get my ends right and it never looks as neat as EK's.

I'm addicted to twist-outs. I get great second and third day hair because the twists keep my hair in place when I sleep. I also find myself twisting, twisting, twisting when I'm doing stuff around the house.

Strangely enough, the curl pattern the twist-outs give me is not that much different than what I naturally have. It just makes me hair less frizzy, I think.

I will try to take some pictures over the next week or so.

    Thanks again, Eccentric_Kurlz.
