How do you all feel about that? My hair turns into a wild animal overnight so I *have* to rewet it on a daily basis. Do you girls believe that dries the hair out? Or does it matter? I've spoken to hair dressers about this and gotten a mixed response.
Water does dry it out. Try a leave-in spray conditioner, like Jane Carter. It's very moisturizing. When you say "wild animal" do you mean that you wake up with dry hair?

when i wear my hair out, i have to rewet it everyday to get cute curls. usually i just wear a puff on 2nd day hair because i look like a crazy person if i dont. but everytime i rewet iti have to apply more product.
my sister is a stylist and her theory is that rewetting it daily dries it out more.
My mom and I have natural hair and she wets it EVERYDAY. It is growing like a weed like the water helps. (watering your hair) She wets it then adds her product. I have done the same and it works as far as becoming curlier. The only problem I am facing is that Chicago is to cold for me to be doing that everyday so I have sprays to do the same thing as water.
I also wash my TWA every day because if I didn't I would look like a crazy woman. :afro: lol However, I make sure to use a leave-in con at all times w/ a little honey. My hair is very shiny, moist, and growing like a weed too considering the fact that I BCed on 8/1/07. When I BCed I barely had an inch of hair on my head. Therefore, if you are natural I think washing your hair everyday is harmless.
Natural since 8/01/07

i can't go without wetting my hair, my hai doesn't get combed if it isn't wet, the poster above who says brushing wet increases breakage and frizzes out your hair i find it the complete opposite, brushing makes my hair stick together and look smooth reduces the frizz and trying to comb my hair dry is painful i can feel each hair being ripped out...
i'm not 3c or 3 anything but i HAVE to wet my hair daily if i want it to look good. overnight my hair gets smooshed and to perk it up i have to wet it. i don't understand the theory of plain old water drying your hair out. it's ONLY helped my hair. i think water might be getting a bad rep for products and/or styling techniques but the water itself should be fine.
this week i've been trying water to dampen my hair, then a bit of castor/jojoba on my scalp and some curls by sisters smith. my coworker who is relaxed said my hair looks nice today...we've had discussions about my hair looking dry/lifeless...i'm thinking my combo might be working.

If rewetting and dampening the hair mean the same thing, then that's what I do. My hair is more moisturized then if I had co-washed it! I love damp hair styling it works for me.
After recs on hair sites, I did the daily co-wash thing in perfect conditions for moisturized hair; twice filtered water, humidity, and totally CG products. My hair was screaming by the third day, though I kept it up for over a week to see if my hair would "adjust". It did not.
Too much water swells my hair shaft too much, makes the cuticle scales stand up, and the hair feel rough, brittle, limp and mushy.
Too little water and I have very dry, unmanageable hair.
Twice a week soaking is enough for my hair and I have to space it out; if I have to wash my hair two days in a row and I so much as spritz it on the 3rd day it goes into swollen/rough/brittle/limp/mushy mode with all the tangling that entails.
I can use creamy/lotiony water-based products to dampen my hair on a daily basis, but I don't do so well with spritzes. For me, it's all about balancing moisture, not depriving my hair of it, but not constantly drenching it either.

I think it really depends on the brush that one is using. What kind and type of brush is everyone using for this method to work?
my hair is pretty crazy when i wake up too. i have only been totally natural for about 2 months, so im still learnin... ive been wetting every day and that didnt dry me out, but it did make for some frizzy days. recently though, ive been waking up late/not enough time to cowash.
what ive discovered really works is to spray a moisturizing spritz all over hair, kinda scrunch it in (but dont really rake or do anything to break up the already smashed curls), clip up any longer pieces so they dont get wet, shower. i like a really hot shower, so the steam is what is imortant here. after i get out, i just pull it all back into a puff/ponytail (which is making a puff with the double wrapped no-slip goody headbands, then pulling the band around the hair a third time so its not as big as the puff, but not as small as a pony tail...it makes it look like youve got more hair too). ive also tried this without the shower (like if you take a nap & smash your hair, or shower at night) and it still works. you just have to give the spritz time to sink in.
here is how i made my spritz:
some distilled water, some of a leave in you like (i was at thte end of a bottle and just ran some water through it & swished around) and some honey. other folks have better sounding recipies, so check around.
Well this morning I woke up with an 8 inch afro LMAO the back of my hair is plastered to my head. Yeah I highly recommend you not wet your hair at night before going to sleep :compress: ha ha ha I have no choice right now but to wet it unless I get some epiphany and decide I want to look like Don King.

lol sorry...I meant that it gets "smooshed," it looses its curl, its shine, it basically looks like someone else's hair...FYI, I do NOT wet it w/out conditioner. I wouldn't dare. I use a leave in every time I wet it.
I guess maybe wetting it is not a problem for some...I really can't tell if my hair is damaged from the water. My hair is growing, but maybe it would grow more w/out the water :shrugs:
