need recommendations for curl enhancers

anonymous_16anonymous_16 Posts: 1Registered Users
Hi,
This is my first time posting and I have learned so much from reading posts on this board. Thanks everyone!

I have 2a hair, I believe, and have yet to have more than 3 or 4 good hair days a month since I stopped straightening my hair. My hair has more curl in it than I realized (it seemed to get more so with each pregnancy). I've been playing around with products and routines but I need some suggestions. I really want to limit my products to stuff I can buy at the store vs. online. I know I can get really nice curls that last all day because it's happened - my best hair days occurred during a cabin camping trip at a state park - I think my hair hates soft water and loves the hard stuff. It also needs a trim but I'm leary of that. I had a Deva stylist cut it in another city last summer and it was awesome but I can't get there easily at all.

Okay, I've found some suggestions for gel and conditioners on other posts (but feel free to repeat or add any here) what I'd really like is a good curl enhancing product I can get at a drugstore/"supermart". Any other tips are welcome as well.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

The best curl enhancer I have found was doing (modified) curly girl. I never could find one product to enhance curl better than actually changing the way I take care of my hair. And once I got started on that, I really cut down on the products I use. In general, I only use conditioner, sometimes lo-poo and then my gel. sometimes I use honey as a rinse)
So that has given me more curl enhancement and I use less products and my hair feels nice and soft too.
My gel is Aura Hypoallergenic. (from Sally's)
Which is not a curl enhancer in itself, but that combined with my routine gives me soft, defined waves-spirally waves like I never had before (I am not a true curly)

I have to agree with JamieV... my hair had waves and acted like it wanted to curl but wouldn't. When I changed the way I care for it...and it's only been a few weeks, suddenly, I have a lot more curls. I have been using the Alagio Curl Enhancing Curling Balm and the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCare-Arc-AnGell-p-567.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacare-arc-angell]DevaCurl Arc Angell[/buylink]. For my particular hair, the Alagio seems to be providing the best results, but that is only after plopping for about 10 - 15 minutes.

JamieV, how often do you low-poo. I low-poo'd on Sunday and then again on Tuesday (to see what would happen) my hair seemed like it was po'd with me for doing that. How often do you CO? Do you CO wash?
Currently, using JC HCC, Too Shea, CK and CCSS, RR or LOOB or MOP-C.

hopetocurl, I use lo-poo (roots only) about 2 times a week, sometimes 3. The other days either I don't even wet it or there may be a day in there that I just co-wash or wash with baking soda. Basically, when it gets too weighed down, I use lo-poo but if it seems a little dry, I co-wash. But for me, co-washing every time makes me lose some definition. I do kind of have to play it by ear....Reading back on what I just said..it sounds so....chaotic. But I just kind of know what to do when. :) Thats a basic overall look at what I do..sorry if it sounds a little chaotic!

I use about dime size amount for my hair (BSL when wet). I emulsify it in my palms and then scrunch in and I diffuse about 80-85% dry! Great def. and bounce!

Thanks JamieV. I too am having to play it by ear. If you don't mind looking at my pics on fotki. The last 2 are right after a DT with oil/mayo (it was nasty to do but got great curls). I think my hair must be too dry and when I DT it curls up...what do you think? How would I get more moisture into it? Any ideas?

For some reason, I can't see your pictures...
I am not sure I can really answer your question...when I need more moisture, I just do a co-wash. I never leave any conditioner in or it will weight my hair down too much.(but that helps a lot of people) I haven't tried anything special for moisture though, just my regular old conditioner....sorry, I know thats not helping much.

yeah...like today, my hair seems a little on the dry side. So I think when I wash it tonight I will do a co-wash and not use lo-poo. That usually will help it to be less dry and less frizzy. maybe next time you wash it, try that.
If its dry, I just co-wash, then put in more co and rinse out. If its weighed down, I use lo-poo on my roots and co on the rest. Then a rinse out co.

yeah i am looking for some good curl enhancers. i think the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Knot-Today-p-207.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-knot-today-leaveindetangler]knot today[/buylink] may be good, i guess re;coil and angell would be good too.

i am not sure why deva makes angell and arc angell when arc is more hold, but i think most people want more hold. i guess it may be in the ingredients which i will check.

curl enhancers are good after we wash or cowash and then leave in, then [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]kccc[/buylink] or something. go curl enhancers, they rock.:headbang:

I find my best curl enhancers are obssessive scrunching and diffusing.

I put my products in while my hair is sopping wet. Then scrunch until the squishy sound is gone. You can just plain old scrunch, scrunch and hold or the scrunch 'n pump method which seems to work for a lot.

Once there is no squish left, I scrunch with a flour sack towel in the scrunch and hold method to minimize clumping and to get rid of the last of the excess water out before diffusing.

I either pixiecurl diffuse or Hot Sock depending on whether I'm home or not.

KMS has a curl balm that I believe is CG and you can get it at the beauty supply. That's the only store bought one I know of. There are some recipes for some you could make at home too if you wanted.
