Longer curly hair weighed down...

Hello All! I was wondering if anyone had this same issue as I do, and if so, what do you do to change it. I BC'd Sept 03 and my hair has grown alot since them. My hair , to me, was at its prime (as far as cuteness) about 2005. I could wear it in a curly afro and it looked good-had alot of definition. Now, as my hair is getting longer and longer (its all the same length), it is weighed down so much and I can't get the big curly hair like I used to do. If I make my hair big at this length, there will be no curl definition. Even though I liked my hair better at a shorter state, I still love my hair and its length when I straighten my hair--which I do from time to time. But I am getting to the point where I don't like to wear my hair in its natural state because it is just weighed down and the bottom half gets so frizzy, whereas the top half doesnt show alot of definition. It just looks really bad to me. I love it wet, but as soon as it dries I am scrambling for rubberbands throughout the day. Have you all had to deal with this? Also, Do you think my hair dries like that because my hair is all one length? Would layering my hair make the changes I am looking for? Thanks for all the help.

i havent done a protein treatment. I will research so I can figure out what it is. Usually when I wash my hair-i comb it out in the shower and put in a leave in like Cantu Shea leavein conditioner and usually thats it. When I have time, I will use PM Foaming Pomade or the leave in from Garnier curls line. But I don't do those consistently because usually I am rushing in the morning. It would probably help if I did something to it at night so I don't have to rush and do it in the morning. Do you think that is what it is, I need a protein treatment?

sometimes hair can be over-moisturized---its important for hair to have a moisture/protein balance

my hair doesnt like protein on a regular basis...but when it gets spongy and undefined and really frizzy (which is about every 4-6 weeks) thats usually MY sign that it needs protein.

but its important that you follow up a protein treatment with a deep moisturizing conditioner b/c protein is drying

if your hair is brittle and breaking, then thats a good sign that your hair is lacking protein. if it isnt then theres just a huge chance that the issues youre having are due your hair cut, length, and products. aol had a great article about hair today that showed ways you could add more protein to your diet instead of trying to get it in through products. http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/2008/01/14/tips-for-faster-hair-growth/

having your hair cut in layers could definitely increase curl definition. right now, the layers in the back of my hair are almost extinct and it totally effects the way my hair curls and the volume that i can achieve. also, how are you applying products? have you tried shingling products in? i shingled my products in today and my hair looks totally different. i have a headful of defined ringlets instead of my usual mane. lastly, length does play a huge factor. your hair could just be to weighty now to achieve the look you prefer. when i was growing out my BC i had cute spirals and the longer my hair gets, the more my hair tends to be S shaped with a ringlet at the end.

Subbrock- I definitely understand what you are saying about the texture changed due to length since it weighs it down more. Thank you for the article as well. I havent tried shingling yet. I've had [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Miss-Jessies-Curly-Pudding-p-578.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=miss-jessies-curly-pudding]Miss Jessies Curly Pudding[/buylink] for over a year now and haven't tried shingling with it because I heard so many mixed reviews about it and how it makes your hair hard. I will try it though since I wasted all that money.

brownshugahgirl- Thank you for your information about protein and having a good balance of moisture/protein. I will have to incorporate that into my new hair care.

Definitely sounds like it's time for a cut to take some of that weight off the outer layers to encourage the curl.
