Psoriasis solution

hmkennyhmkenny Posts: 1,409Registered Users Curl Novice
I've had Psoriasis forever but this is the first winter in a very long time that I've had it on my scalp. I've been trying to find a CG friendly solution and then remembered I used hot oil treatments years ago to combat this. I did one yesterday and sure enough it worked! No itching or flaking even today. Just wanted to share in case there are any other psoriatics reading. :)

Wow cool thanks... I never thought to try it. I haven't really had a bad psoriasis attack in awhile, but this winter it's back with revenge :evil1:

Ooh... I may have to try this. What product did you use?

I'm new to the boards, and came here specifically for this reason. My dermatologist has had me on prescription shampoo for the last 6 months, and it hasn't been nice to my curls.. :(

I used to think I had dandruff/dry scalp/psoriasis until I went CG about 2-3 weeks ago. My scalp has only flaked once and that was due to using too much product and not washing it out quickly enough (by that I mean I probably waited 4 days between washing and such.)

I wasn't convinced that if I went CG the flakes and itchiness would go away, but it has. You may want to try that as well.

And yes, I had prescription shampoo medication as well that would totally tear up my hair and leave my scalp itchless/flakeless for about a day's time, so I totally understand. :)

I've had it for as long as I can remember, and seeing as the dermatologist told me thats what it is, I believe it. I always thought it was dandruff too. It didn't go away during the year I followed CG though. :(

thats absolutely fabulous news about the hot oil treatment! (and not-so-fabulous news for Aqza :( Did going CG at least not make it worse??)

I've had moderate psoriasis on my scalp since i was a baby, though I've been lucky enough that I don't have it anywhere else. hmkenny, what kind of hot oil treatment did you use? and did you follow the instructions or leave it on for longer?

I was also wondering if the brown sugar/conditioner combination in the CG book would help the flaking and itchiness... has anyone tried it?

MimsTX, I actually discontinued the hot oil treatments after I discovered the shampoo brush that I picked up at Sally's. Scrubbing my scalp with the brush really did the job for me and the hot oil treatments were no longer necessary. Anyway, I used Queene Helene Hot Oil Treament and I think I left it on for ten minutes with a hot turban.

    Hello:

I've never posted on this board before, but I came across it and thought I'd pass on this bit of info. I don't have psorisis, but my husband does. He has it on his scalp and since I started CG I told him how it was helping my dandruff and itchy scalp. So, he tried it and said it really helps. He also tried the brown sugar scrub and absolutely loved it. He said it got rid of the flakes and itchies. Also, on the general message board, another curly came across this oil: Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil with Ginseng. I bought it at Wal-Mart, and he said it's great for the flakes, dryness, and itch on his scalp and the other affected areas (elbows, knees). And it's CG friendly and great on dry hair for adding moisture and removing the "crunch" from your hair.

    Hope this helps!:toothy7:

I just thought I'd add in my 2 cents. I started using only Chargin Valley Shampoos on my hair (they are CG) and since then I've not had problems with my psoriasis. It's almost completely gone except one small place by my temple. I've had sucess no matter which bar I choose. Hope this helps.

i've actually noticed over the last few days that i'm not having my usual issues at all since my last shampoo!!! my scalp has only just started itching today, and i've had absolutely none of the sticky puss stuff... it's been realy odd to run my hands through my hair and not end up with hives on my palms!!!

I put jojoba oil on my scalp, leave it overnight then use a fine-tooth comb to get all the flakies off in the morning. Keeps it clear for a few days which is better than nothing.
The brown sugar scrub didn't help, unfortunately.

This is going to should like a really daft thing to do but I read on makeupalley that putting the yellow Listerine on your scalp helps to clear up itchy, flaky scalps. Apparently the yellow is best so you don't stain your skin. After you've put it on you wash and condition as normal. I haven't tried it but I do have a small bottle of green Listerine so I may give it a go and risk a green tinge to my skin

Ditto the jojoba--massage into scalp at night and then gentle shampoo in the morning.

I have just tried yellow Listerine on my scalp. I put a cap full on each side and at the base of scalp and rubbed it in. I have a really bad patch of psoriasis on the left side of my head and it started to tingle but not in the painful way listerine does to your mouth. I cleaned the bath afterwards and it had chunks of skin/scales mixed in with the listerine!

Afterwards I washed my hair with Nizoral and my scalp feels so much better.

I will give it another go next sunday. I don't smell of mint or whatever it is the mouthwash smells of.

I know this thread is old, but thought I should follow up and ask...

For those of you that have gotten rid of your itches and scalies, how often do you shampoo during the week?
