Good gel for 2C hair (update 8/17)

oingo-sproingooingo-sproingo Posts: 144Registered Users
Hello 2C-ers, I was wondering if you could recommend a good gel for our hair -- preferably something under $10. I've been using Tigi Control Freak, which has been giving me amazing curl separation and clumping -- BUT it does not have hold beyond a few hours. My hair doesn't get frizzy in the sense that there are kinky flyaways, but it starts to look disheveled and lose volume. Control Freak does not seem to mix well with cream stylers. From what I have read, I think that the Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee would be too intense for my hair -- but maybe I could dilute it with Control Freak? I really hate the wet hair look -- crunch is not horrible so long as hair does not appear crunchy.

TIA for sharing your favorites!

Some gels that work for me are Aura Hypoallergenic (from Sally's) mixed with a little Abba Weightless Gel. You may not need the Abba since you prefer no crunch. I need it to help control frizz on the left side of my hair and it gives me some volume near my roots. Also, I recently started using Suave Sculpting Gel (blue gel) and it is really cheap! It has more hold than their Aloe gel, but less crunch than their version of Biolage Gelee. Also, many people like Herbal Essences Frizz-defying gel (red tube). It worked for me for about a week, then I noticed the top of my hair looking very flat so I stopped using it. It works for the bottom part of my hair, but weighs down the top so I don't use it anymore. I hope one of these may work for you!

    Good luck!

I get good results using the Aussie Dual with Aussie Tizz over the top. However, I found I like just using the Tizz because it has a softer hold and my hair doesn't feel quite so dry the next day. The HE gel works well also, but if you don't do well with protein, you can't use it daily. I have wavy s-curls with some spirals. Since I quit plopping, it seems that my curls are more spiral-y. I know I keep talking about the Aussie gels and no-plopping (like beating a dead horse  ), but I am getting consistantly good results.

The 2b forum is dead. Do you mind if I join my fellow wavies here too?

My new favorite gel is Back to Nature Rosemary Clean Mint Gel; and, currently on sale at curlmart for 50% off!! Of course I bought it before the sale  . RHG was terrible on my hair. Way too intense.

I am going to try the Aussie combo this weekend. :D

Have you tried Nexxus POTAR gel or B&A?

Maudie I am a no-plopper too :) I haven't tried the Aussie Combo because I just can't stand the smell.

Lushaholic Nope, haven't tried those, but I think they may be out of my price range. (Plus I'd have to order the B&A gel, and the PJ in me just can't wait for that!!)

So bad news -- I tried the HE humidity defying gel and I got mediocre results at best. It basically counteracted the lovely clumping effect that Control Freak has, so right now, I have a head of thin, stringy curls. Looks like I got a perm, actually. It did absolutely nothing for frizz control, if anything, I have more frizz than normal. Perhaps due to poor drying techniques on my part, the gel seemed to lose its hold midway through drying and some of the curls are wrapping around each other in a strange fashion. OH WELL. Bought Nexxus spray gel (non alcoholic) and MOP high shine pomade, so the experiments continue .... ![/b]

The HEHD did not really work for me at all. Although it gave my hair yummmmmyy texture and relatively decent frizz control, it broke my hair into thin curls.

The Nexxus NexxStyler spray gel, however, is awesome. I spray it in (or spray on hands and scrunch in) when hair is about 80% dry. Has a glossy finish, crunch can be scrunched out, and gave me the kind of hold I like-- flexible, not too strong. Yay!

Btw, if you do find the Nexxus Potar gel (maybe they have it at the same place where you bought the other Nexxus product?), they have it in 2 sizes and the smaller one is 5.50 but it was big enough for me! :)

It seem like it doesn't matter which gel I use anymore. Even Tizz, which is light hold, makes my hair feel dried out and wig-like. I used to be able to scrunch out the crunch, but now some crunch stays in and the curls are stuck together. I was considering going productless and I did for two days. However, the uncontrolled poof factor was too much! Maybe when my hair is longer...

Agk, I noticed that your sig says that you hate gel. Did you ever find a product that worked for you?

I tried HEHD this weekend and am very disappointed. Now I remember why I've stayed away from gels!

Wish I had a good sugguestion for you!

:) Yah, that's been my sig line even since before my quest for a good gel. Now I know why I hate them! My problem is this: Control Freak alone makes my curls clump really well but has zero hold. When I mix gel with it, the problem is that during the drying process, the gel becomes stiff. That make it easy for the curls to break apart into thin curls, even though I have decent hold and rizz reduction. I wish there was a way to flash freeze my hair after using Control Freak alone! I'm going to keep experimenting with HEHD, only because I really need to find a *cheap* product that will work for me! But maybe I'll just be resorting to Rusk Wired again ... which is essentially 500 'cones in a tube ;)

What's the consistency of the POTAR gel? (And btw -- I didn't see it at my store, but I must not have been looking hard enough; they have soooo many Nexxus products)

I pretty much gave up on the HE gel. Now it looks like I am giving up on the two Aussies, also. I tried some L'Oreal Lasting Curls gel I found in the closet, but it's sort of crunchy and stringy. It doesn't feel as wig like as the Tizz has been feeling, though. What about curling creams or pomades? I need drugstore prices as well. And nothing greasy! :(

Pomade only goes so far for me for hold ... sometimes I think my hair gets frizzier WITH pomade. But I do like the MOP high shine pomade -- don't know about hold power, but dang, it is shiny. As for curling cremes though -- Maudie, why don't you try Dove's texture paste (name is something like that). It comes in a jar, not a bottle. I am having a personally boycott against Dove, but I have heard very good things about its shaping and hold. I felt the consistency from a store -- thick, just a little sticky, but seems like it would mix very well with a smoother or just a bit of gel. I think it is $2.99 for the small jar. Not sure how much is required to get good definition but if not that much, it could be a really good deal. And, although they are not drugstore prices, Rusk has three other creme stylers that I might try soon; they either have no cones or MUCH less cone-age than Wired. Although I'm not a CG-er, I'm thinking of doing co washes with a normal shampoo once a week.

    I'll keep updating as I experiment :)

B&A gel. It's great stuff. You get hold, definition, curl enhancement, softness and shine all in one bottle. It's more than the $10 you would prefer to pay, but it lasts a long time and it's a big bottle, so it's worth seriously considering.

What!!! Did you read my mind? I just now got back from the store where I purchased Dove Defined Texture Molding Cream for $2.97. I will try it in the morning and let you know what I think.

Although I am not CG either, I also do CO washes daily and shampoo wash about every 4 days.

Thanks for all your input, AGK. Mip, I assume you order the B & A online?

agk, the Nexxus PhytoOrganics Arts Defining Gel is thick, but not sticky. It's got a rather pleasant scent, and it's clear. It doesn't give stiff hold, but it does clump pretty well.

Maudie: I will live vicariously through you!

Lushaholic: well ... I s'pose after I return all my "didn't work"s to the beauty store, perhaps I can scrounge up the $5.50 for the POTAR gel... :)

Don't you ever wish sometimes that you could just wash and go? Or at least just dump one product in and whiz out the door, knowing that your hair will look awesome?

Ok, results are in. I CO washed and honey rinsed. Then I mixed the Dove cream with Tizz in my hand, smoothed one blob over the top and raked in one blob with hair flipped over. Then I did Sirenrising's plop in the shower thing. I used a t-shirt that I covered with a shower cap. After I left the tee on for a bit. Then clipped the top and the front for a few minutes. So far it looks like I have pretty good formation with little crunch and my hair doesn't feel so wiggy. :D

Maudie, any more news on the Dove stuff? Have you continued to use it more? I went bonkers and bought 3 new things today -- 2 gels, 1 creme styler. We shall see what happens (not listing 'cause I don't think they're CG friendly)

OK. Went to the store, hoping to get Nexxus POTAR creme and gel, but my store does not carry any POTAR products. Boo hiss.

Walked out instead with: Matrix LifTrix volume gel(yes CG friendly?), Rusk Jele Gloss, and Sebastian XTah Loose Locks creme styler. The latter two have cones, sorry.

1st experiment: Shamp and condish like normal, Control Freak like normal. Mix in a dab of CF with LifTrix. LifTrix has a totally non-sticky texture. After I applied two quarter size blobs of LifTrix, hair felt productless even though I know I had put a ton of the stuff in. Guess what? Might as well have not put anything in because my hair has never looked worse. No seriously -- not even after blow drying without product, without diffuser. Let me describe it -- first of all, I went from having FAT curls yesterday with Wired to stringy, spaghetti thin wisps. My hair at the top was totally flat. And I had NO hold -- frizz all over the place, messy ends. What a freaking nightmare!!

2nd experiment: washed out above ASAP. Reapplied CF, then layered Jele Gloss, again about 2 quarter sized amounts. My hair clumps like mad after CF application and the Jele Gloss did not counteract this when wet. Started diffusing, things looked OK. Partway through I felt my hair didn't have enough definition so when hair was 80% dry I did the unthinkable -- did twisties on a few areas -- and oh my gosh, my hair was silky and pliable and the twisties held! At about 90% dry, my curls started clump-mania2005. I smoothed, touched, scrunched, etc. and all this did was enhance the style, no frizzies. And WHOA volume -- basically however I moved my hair, it would stick. Lift at the roots? Stick. Zero crunch, very minimal frizz. I love this stuff!!! Can't say it has enough hold all alone, but I am confident that a dime sized bit of this mixed with the as-yet-not-found cream styler will work wonders. Best of all, I think the bottle is 12oz. for $11 or $12. This stuff is gonna last forever .... Rusk, you've come through yet again!

Sorry, AGK, missed this post. I have used the Dove, slightly diluted with water for 2 days. I like it. My hair is curly, not as defined as with a gel, but softer and not stuck together. I smoothed it on and plopped. I will try it without plopping to see if there are better results. Anyway, my hair feels soft again and the wiggy feeling is gone.

My most favorite gel ever is Aura Hypoallergenic gel. If Aura ever stops making this, I will have to cut my hair off.

It doesn't really enhance or encourage curl (I need something with mag. sulfate in it for that), but it does leave my waves and curls very shiny and very moisturized... all the way to the tips! I love this stuff!!!

I didn't have time to read the whole thread, so hopefully no one has mentioned it, but I use Garnier Fructis Curl Shaping Spray Gel in Strong. It holds EXTREMEMLY well, and it helps a lot when I try to wear my hair curly. The only issue is that if you use too much, it can be crunchy...but it never gives that wet look which I, personally, try to avoid.

I don't know anything about the ingredients, as I am new here and haven't tried a different routine.

It works for me, and I probably live in one the most humid areas of the U.S., ha! So, if humidity is a concern then I love this product.

Lately I've been using KMS control creme (and Nexxus shampoo and conditioner), it seems to be working pretty good for now. Half way through the day I just put my hair up anyhow since it's so darn freakin hot here, but it looks great up :D

I've been playing with Abba weightless gel. So far I am impressed. I haven't quite figured it out yet but when I do use it I have very little if any canopy frizz. (which is my biggest complaint)
