To Help Milk Production

CurlieGlamourGirlieCurlieGlamourGirlie Posts: 1,198Registered Users
I know there was a thread on here, but I guess in the re-vamping of the site, it's now gone. It seems as though I'm not producing enough for my little bruiser. I'll feed him until he removes himself from my breast and then needs to take a small bottle of expressed milk.

Any suggestions? I think there's some herbal remedies out there, but I can't remember what they are.

Thanks!

What's making you think he isn't getting enough? Really little babies are often constantly nursing, and they often have a need for non nutritive sucking as well. If you're able to express milk, you're probably making enough. It's so easy to second guess yourself, especially with a first baby

If he's coming off the breast on his own, you can offer him the other side or if you are not opposed to the idea, you can offer a pacifier to see if he's really looking to nurse more or if he reaslly just wants to suck and be held.

I know there's a mother's milk tea that I've seen in grocery and health food stores that is supposed to help increase milk production.

Are you still only pumping on the side with the cracked nipple? The baby is more efficient than the pump if he is latching properly. When I had sore nipples with my first baby, it was only painful while he was latching, but once he was on,it did not hurt as much (and it only lasted a few weeks). You might try working on improving his latch so that he can nurse on both sides.

I think so since he's taking the bottle of expressed milk in addition to what I feed him from the breast. The pediatrician also said my milk would increase to keep up with his demand.

The nipple is healed (hooray!) so I'm nursing both sides now! We're slowly working on improving his latch. He's strong as anything, so trying to get him to latch sometimes is like trying to wrestle a small, adorable alligator.

(And we're all over the pacifier - it works wonders when I'm trying to figure out if he's really still hungry or just needs to suck.)

You can try drinking the Mother's Milk tea from the health food stores. I think the brand is Traditional Medicinals. I've also heard fenugreek increases milk supply, and it's also available at health food stores.

I'm struggling with milk production now. The verdict on my attempts to increase production:

Mother's Milk Tea: Tastes nasty, low results
Mother's Milk Tincture: Tastes nasty - decent results after a few days.
Fenugreek pills: Works but you smell wierd. Decent results after a few days.
Blended herbs - fenugreek and some other stuff. I don't remember the brand - Pills are huge. Only worked if I doubled dosage. I didn't continue.
    Oatmeal - works well

What I do now is fenugreek & oatmeal.

I also breastfeed as often as possible, co sleep so he can easily feed at night and don't use a pacifier.

Huh, I think it tastes fine. No idea on results though, I'm just drinking it b/c I have some samples.

CGG - I also wanted to suggest swaddling if Lucas is wrsetling with you. Those little arms can sure get in the way. The first few days with Dylan, it seemed like everytime he opened his mouth wide enough, there'd be a little hand in front of it. :laughing7:

Drink beer. Even non-alcoholic beer will give amazing results.

I have heard that pacifiers interfere with breast feeding - I would stop with that, personally.

I agree - since you can express milk, how do you know you don't produce enough?

I'm finally getting his hands out of the way! Lucas does the exact same thing!

Once breastfeeding is established, a paci is often not a big deal. If the baby was rejecting the breast, I'd be concerned about using an artificial nipple, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I would stop topping him off with the bottle, though, it sounds like you're probably producing enough and that your supply will increase as Lucas's demand increases.

don't forget LOTS of water, like 10-12cups a day. Keeping your body hydrated and continually offering your breast will help up your supply. I agree with the oatmeal and the beer...better yet, why not an oatmeal stout? hehe GL

Hmmmmm....does Sam Adams make one of those? ;)

Actually, we've been doing better since I posted this. No bottles since then and I've been pumping when not feeding to keep things flowing so to speak. And I've been trying hard to drink lots of water.

    Thanks!!!

LOL, actually I think they do! Goose Islands makes a yummy one;-)
Glad to hear your supply's been boosted, eventually just nursing should be enough to keep the supply up. How often is your babe nursing? How old is he?

I think the pumping really helped.

He's eating about every 2-3 hours and he's 3 weeks old today!!
