What is a "modified" CG?

Several of you claim to be modified CGs. What does that mean exactly?

I believe strict cgers never wash their hair. Since I use shampoo a couple times a month (nonsulfate shampoo only) I consider myself modified?

I'm pretty sure that modified CG can have a lot of definitions. I think if you don't use hard-to-remove ingredients such as cyclopentasiloxane, mineral oil, lanolin, etc. and don't straighten every day you could be considered modified CG. Modified CG can use water-insoluble silicones that can easily be removed with cocamidopropyl betaine or a sulfate, and both CG and modified CG can use water-soluble cones.

I consider myself modified CG because I use CG-friendly products and use a gentle shampoo every other day.

    Corrections are welcome!

Yes, we wash but use a conditioner as the "shampoo". The surfactants in it along with the friction of rubbing the scalp with the fingertips cleans the scalp rather than relying on suds or lather to get "squeaky" clean hair.

"Squeaky" to me sounds like the hair has been stripped of both the bad and good oils!

Hmmm. But isn't that method of cleansing totally CG? What would be modified about that?

    (Sorry to be dense)

In my mind, modified CG uses shampoo to wash. CG uses conditioner and friction to wash.

What about using shampoo, but using sulfate free shampoo and more gentle moisturizing shampoo? Would that be modified or would it fall under CG?

I think if you use shampoo you are modified? It is really semantics, you experiment and then do what works best for your hair. I can say without a doubt that eliminating the cones has made a huge difference for me. I went back to using them for a short time and my hair was horrible!!!!! I have learned my lesson!!!!!

    Hi Jillipoo,

You are not dense!! No, I was just tring to clarify what Rejoicingcurly and Keikok were saying about the "not washing" their hair , meaning we do wash just not with shampoo, blah, blah...Sorry to be confusing, guys!

If you use a poo, just a nonsulfate one, I believe that helps make you a "modified" CG.

I consider myself modified CG, because I co-wash for the most part .... but do a shampoo (sulfate free) and a clarify (elucence) occasionally.
ITA about the cones ... When I first eliminated the cones and only did the co-wash routine, my hair looked horrible for a few days. To me, it looked greasy and felt dirty.

I was really glad that I stuck it out. I tried a product containing dimethicone (without realizing it was in there ... note to self READ THE LABEL !!) ... my hair was horrible for days afterwards. I clarified and then DT'd ... but I'm staying away from the cones in the future. I'm glad I tried this in the fall though ... I don't think I would have had the patience to take out the cones with the humidity of the summer.

ROUTINE: LI, enhancer, gel, plop with Curlease towel, serum product (either CIAB or Gel-les'c), clip & diffuse.
Too many favourite products to list ... I finally have my routine that works and alot of products to choose from. My product stash is huge, but well loved !!!

I use pretty much all silicones, a low (no ALS, ALES, SLS, SLES) to no sulfate cleanser once a week but a clarifying shampoo once a month, & I use gels that contain color.

I don't use mineral oil, drying alcohols (definitely as first ingredient), & paraffin or beeswax. I'm unsure about using lanolin, but don't think I have to worry about that since I haven't seen it in any of my products, ever.

I consider myself modified CG. Maybe I'm completely non-CG. :dontknow:

I consider myself modified cg b/c I use shampoo, although a gentle one, about once a week. I really like baby shampoo when I feel as though I need a shampoo!

I consider myself modified CG. I use No Poo, [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Hair-Cleansing-Cream-p-103.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-hair-cleansing-cream]Jessicurl HCC[/buylink] or conditioner to wash, but still use either a sulfate-free or gentle shampoo a couple times a week. I also use a gentle clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks. I try to stay away from cones, but if I feel like using or trying something with cones, I don't worry that much about it since I do shampoo; doesn't seem to mess up my hair one way or the other. Maybe I'm actually totally non-CG, too.

There have been so many definitions and new definitions and changed definitions of CG or modified CG since the book came out that my head spins sometimes, LOL. That isn't necessarily bad because change is good. However, I've recently taken to referring to myself as "NS2", meaning "no sulfates, no silicones." Easy, self-explanatory and much less likely to give me a headache :)

I think what most people overlook is that the book DOES recommend using a low-sulfate poo once a week if you are a "wavy" type. I consider myself modified b/c I gentle poo more often than the book recommends (about three times a week), but not simply b/c I poo in the first place. :dontknow:

Good point! I am not a wavy, but using a low sulfate poo 1-2x's a month works for me, in addition to CW etc.. I stay away from bad alcohol and cones. My hair loves protein, especially in the winter. Oh yeah, and I consider myself a modified CG.

I consider myself a modified CGer because I use poo 1x/week and clarify 1x/month. The other days I condition-wash. My hair is easily overconditioned, so true CG just didn't work for me.
