Slimming/toning butt/hips/thighs on a Treadmill

What is the best way to trim butt/hips/thighs on a treadmill? I read that putting the machine on the steepest incline and walking at a slow speed helps. Any thoughts? advice?

    Incline of a grad 7 or 8 and speed of no more than 5 mph should help.

    running on an incline strangely turned my thin thighs into big muscly Venus Williams type thighs. Only when I started running without an incline did they go back to normal

    Yep, increase incline. At least that's how it works on the elliptical. Also, I hesitate to mention this, because it's dangerous, but I read it in a book. Walk backwards (low incline)--be careful! On the elliptical, it is reversing direction. Same theory!

    Really? Well each person is different. It may not hurt to seek the advice of a personal trainer to learn what exercises would be most effective to reach the goal.

    I worked out today on the treadmill -- incline of 7, speed level 3.4. I definitely felt it working my thighs and butt, whereas a higher incline or higher speed feels like it's only working my quads or calves.

    Everyone will vary in terms of how quickly they build muscle and where they store fat, but if you don't overdo it, you probably won't be in danger of bulking up.

    Thanks everyone, I got more responses than I had expected. I will also ask one of the trainers at the gym. I think that I also need to start doing a lot more weight training.

    I find that my legs bulk up really quick so when I do the steep incline I get thunder thighs. I just try to go for a longer walk/run if possible.

    Keep us updated on what the trainer says

    I've seen this happen to many, many women. It makes sense. People who are constantly walking up hills also get bulky legs - the treadmill incline is no different. The Incline will definitely make you toned but it will also add bulk eventually.

    Inclines (on hills or machines) will give you tightness and leanness in the thigh and butt areas.

    Not necessarily. It depends on how you are built.

    People who have a tendancy to get bulky in the thigh area...such as yours truly... will not achieve leanness in the thighs/butt from doing the machines at a steep incline. I found that out the hard way! :(

    Actually, thighs and tummy are really the only parts I seem to be able to pack on real weight. Butt and elsewhere to a much lesser extent.

    I would have to look at a person's whole routine and diet to relate the gain you're describing to inclines. The only exercise I know of that can cause the thighs to bulk is the full (ATG) squat.
