Advice on (digestive) cleansing, please

I have been considering doing a cleanse for about 2 years but have never managed to get around to it. I would really appreciate suggestions for cleanses or links/leads on recommended cleanses. I read the thread on here about the master cleanse and truthfully, it seems too much for me. My job leaves me very drained, and I work out every other day. I am also prone to certain health issues that do not mix well with 10 days of fasting and cleansing.

On a related note, I have begun to strongly suspect that I have IBS. I cannot confirm this, however, because I'm on vacation and cannot get treatment thanks to my crappy HMO. Would it be a bad idea to do a cleanse if I do, in fact, have IBS?

    I have done the nature's secret ultimate cleanse--can be purchased at any health food store. It is an herbal/fiber cleanse. You can eat normal (healthier is better), but should be done when you can be home (close to the toilet, and in private--if you know what I mean). It will clean you out. I have even done it on a 3 day weekend. Since I eat healthier now, it doesn't take very long to complete. I would be careful with an all liquid cleanse. They can be dangerous, if not supervised. How about all veggies, whole grain carbs and water/tea for a week? Eliminate or cut down on dairy, preservatives, sugar, caffeine, meat or bad fats, for a cleanse. There are great books out there. I recommend Marilu Henner's Total health Makeover (No laughing. It is actually excellent--I researched many of her ideas afterwards and it is very thorough) or Detox Solution by Patricia Fitzgerald.

    Thank you both for the book recommendations, I'll definitely be researching more before I go through with a cleanse. I'll probably go to the bookstore tonight if anyone else wants to weigh in. Thanks.

    I've done both the Liver Cleansing Diet by Sandra Cabot and the first 2 weeks (the intense part of the program) of the Fat Flush Plan by Ann Louise Gittleman. Both are super informative and they truly work, if you're strict with them.

    I've done various types of cleansing from master clense to full blown (no pun intended) colonics and honestly, I dont think we are as toxic as we are led to believe.

    Unless you're living next to a sewer, drinking infested water, have disfunctioning kidneys & liver, and eating fast food every day for the last 10 years, I really doubt we have such great levels of toxins that we need to do such drastic things to our body. Dont underestimate the power of your kidneys and liver.

    My ayurvedic practitioner highly discourages such things, and reccomends that if you are indeed going to do a cleansing (juice, kitcharee or otherwise) to take a month to slowly get your body ready for the change and to go into and out of it carefully.

    Be kind to your body.

    I agree. Your body is made to cleanse and detoxify itself quite nicely. There's no need to interfere with that process.

    A century ago, people believed that waste matter stuck to the inside of your intestines and became kind of little barnacles. Now that they can image the inside of your intestines, they have seen that's not the case.

    I've seen the inside of my colon. Nothing sticking to it. But the colon cleansing to prep for the colonoscopy was not fun. Don't do it unless you're having a medical procedure that requires it -- that's my advice.

    (I am due for another colonoscopy this year. Not looking forward to it. The procedure itself is not too tough, the prep is what I don't like.)

    It depends on your lifestyle. I started eating healthy after years of soda, fast food, preservatives and no veggies. Now I eat lots of vegetables and fiber, but it took an herbal cleanse to get my colon moving. I had always had a "#2" every couple days to once a week. Now I know that is not normal. Also, suzen, you saw the inside of your colon AFTER you cleansed for 24 hrs before the procedure (my sister had to drink a gallon of prescription liquid to prepare her for her colonoscopy).

    I agree. I think people who eat fairly healthily and do #2 daily or every other day don't need to cleanse, but it doesn't hurt if they use safe and gentle methods every now and then.

    Anyone doing #2 only every 3-7 days is constipated or has a sluggish colon and should cleanse. I think the methods used are what I would debate.

    Thanks all for your input. I'm not one to jump into things like this without investigating thoroughly, so I'm really on the fence about this. I've decided that instead of doing a cleanse, I'm going to just modify my diet (more fruits, veggies) and increase my fiber intake to see if that makes me feel any better. I lean more towards the belief that we do accumulate old waste, but I do think that the right lifestyle will minimize that. TMI alert: I once had a CT scan done on my abdomen AFTER I had gone to the bathroom and the doc felt the need to remark that I had a LOT of debris, let's say, left inside. I have been eating more healthy and exercising well, so I just want a "clean slate." :)

    Right, I did the gallon drink too. My point was that the old idea that waste accumulates on the inside of the colon is actually not correct.

    I'm much more in favor of increasing whole grains and vegetables in the diet to keep things moving along.

    Psyllium seed husks and plenty of water. You can get them in capsule or powder form. Very cheap.

    I have been taking psyllium powder on and off since the spring; lately been taking it regularly for the last 2 weeks. Any "recipes" to make it more palatable? I was mixing it with soy milk but it gels very quickly. Now I take it with room temp. water, but I end up gagging by the last couple of gulps. Mixing into a smoothie is cool but time consuming! I prefer the powder to the pill.

    i mix 7 oz of water w/ 1-2 oz of UNSWEETENED cranberry juice & and teaspoon of the psyllium husks or dialy fiber powder and have great results (this is mentioned in the fat flush book & healthy digestion book)....it's VERY palatable.

    this is an interesting topic....i don't think excessive "cleansing" is necessary but i think it's good to have several meatless days per week (if you're not vegetarian (i'm not) and i also think it's good to give your system a day or two of rest via fasting....i don't do this every motnh but that would be my personal goal. based on things i've read over the years and my knowledge of myself i think a natural juice fast every month would be highly beneficial. that's just my opinion...i'm not a doctor either!
