Devacurl Angell users?

I always thought that the prices for Devacurl products were too expensive, but now that I've found a site that sells it for $10.50, my curiosity has peaked. But, I can't seem to find any reviews on [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-Angell-p-57.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacurl-angell]DevaCurl Angel[/buylink]l. I have found some on the smell (which is why I ruled out [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCare-Arc-AnGell-p-567.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacare-arc-angell]DevaCare Arc Angell[/buylink]...i hated the smell of devacare OneC) but no reviews on the performance.

Anybody care to share?? I would like to know the consistency of the product, the hold, and how many other products you layer under it. Is it a thin gel more like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curly-Hair-Solutions-Curl-Keeper-p-28.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=curly-hair-solutions-curl-keeper]curl keeper[/buylink] or is it goopy like most drug store gels? Do you like it?

Thanks! :bounce:

Angell is clear, colorless, thick (goopy), not too sticky and has a light hold. The scent is good but a little strong. The only thing I left in under it was a little rinse-out conditioner (Suave, Alberto-VO5). It does not dry crunchy. Like most gels, I had to use a lot of it on soaking wet hair, scrunch with a t-shirt, and diffuse or air-dry for best results.

I think Angell is a good gel (protein-free and CG) that helped control some of my frizzies, but not my favorite. I prefer got2b Spiked Up Gel and Herbal Essences Body Envy Gel because they have enough hold to tame my hair's crazy moments.

Angell is just an ok gel in my book. Out of the Devacurl line, I prefer the Arcangell, but not enough to purchase it again. I bought both to give them a try and have had to really struggle with them.

You'll likely see that everyone says you have to use A LOT of this gel. I didn't give this much thought at first, because curlies tend to use a lot of every product. BUT ... when they say you have to use A LOT, the mean A LOT :laughing9: I have to use more of the Devacurl gels (either Angell or ArcAngell) than any other product I've ever used.

I have had some good results with both gels, but it is never consistent. I won't buy it again. I much prefer [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curly-Hair-Solutions-Gel-p-45.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=curly-hair-solutions-gel]CHS gel[/buylink], Aveda Flax Seed and Aloe gel, Abba Weightless Gel, Mop Top Anti-Frizz gel ... just about any other gel that I've tried !

I was really disappointed in this line. I had expected great things from it, but have never managed to get consistency with them.

Angell is my favorite gel. I like to put it in my hair soaking wet, sometimes I even dilute it with water. If my hair wasn't color-treated b/c of premature gray, it would be similar to your type, I think (meaning better condition than it is). Almost as good, and cheaper, is Loreal Studio Line Invisi-hold or VO5 mega hold, the former a bit better than the latter. JMO.

Angell is the only gel I use and believe me I've tried plenty.

I am a 2b/3a fine wavy so I can't use anything with too much weight or oil because my hair gets weighed down or greasy. And I don't like crunch at all.

I use Angell every day over CK and I get great curls, with staying power and no crunch. And I can get 2nd day hair.
I only use one plop of it, so it lasts me a while.

I agree with this. I've used Angell and had Perfect results (soaking wet hair) and then used it and it was almost like I had no product in my hair. It may have to do with condition your hair is in at the time. As a rule for me, if my hair is well mositurized then I have better results regardless of what product I use. That said, Angell was still not one that I could consider an ol'reliable.

Bingo! According to the folks at Devachan, anyway!

I just spent time at Devachan getting my Deva certificate of training and one of the key points they made during the training was this: moisture is what forms, shapes and defines your curls ... not product. And lack of moisture is what causes frizzies ... not product (or lack thereof). The product is just there for hold. So it is critically, vitally important that your hair be extremely well-moisturized before applying gel of any kind in order for it to work well. If you see frizz, it isn't because you haven't applied enough product ... it's because your hair is under-moisturized.

Based on what they said, I can only assume people might have a different result with AnGell or ArcAngell if they put extra moisture in their hair first.

So a good rich rinse-out conditioner or/and a leave-in and then just a small amount of gel is best? I'm curious because a stylist I was going to used enough Angell for 15 heads of hair and I could not stand how my hair felt. In fact, I went right home and washed it out. I've noticed lately that I need very little gel as long as I've scrunched it into soaking wet hair.

As I saw it demonstrated at Devachan, you need a decent amount of gel, but you shouldn't have to use gobs and gobs of it. With the live model demonstration, they raked in [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-BLeave-In-p-434.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-bleavein]B'Leave-In[/buylink] and scrunched in Set It Free ... THEN they scrunched in AnGell. They weren't chintzy with the amount they used, but I didn't feel they used tons either. When she was dry, they scrunched her curls out with another spray of Set It Free. Her hair was beautiful and soft, with no frizz and no gunky feeling.

I tried this today (I forgot the order so I did SIF first then the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-BLeave-In-p-434.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-bleavein]B'leave-in[/buylink]). I also put some SheaM/CK combo in first. It is not dry yet but it looks very good so far. I did pixiecurl diffuse for a bit too. For those that don't like shrinkage it might not be good because it looks like I lost an inch of hair but to me that's good because it means curls!

Awesome! Let us know how the final result turns out. I don't mind shrinkage either if my curls look really good.

I've been using Angell for awhile, and although I am curious about other options, I like it well enough on my fine 3a hair.

I do use quite a lot, but can sometimes use too much and end up with crunch -which I then de-crunch when my hair is dry with a cotton t-shirt (learned that trick here and it works great. Sometimes I actually purposely put on too much product just to get the hold, then de-crunch with a t-shirt - again, works great)
3A - fine, just above shoulder length, w/red color and highlights.

Product: Suave Coconut leave in, Joico Joiwhip mousse, Angell or F/X Curl booster on wet hair. Sometimes rotate in ReCoil/CK.

Routine: Scrunch with cloth diapers, then use Shellynot's clipping method. Diffuse a bit without touching hair. Leave clips in at least half and hour. Remove clips and air dry.

    Day 2: Pineapple, no product.

DT once a week with DevaCare OneC

I have used the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-BLeave-In-p-434.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-bleavein]b'leave in[/buylink]/SIF/Angell combo for 3 days and so far so good. I do use CK/SheaM under but I have been getting some very good hair days. I am not using a ton of product either. For the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-BLeave-In-p-434.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-bleavein]b'leave in[/buylink] probably a dime size, then a 3 squirts of SIF in my hands - rub them together and then srunch in and probably a nickel sized amount of angell. I cannot use a lot of product or my hair gets weighed down and funky looking and so far these amounts are good. I have been putting it all in wet hair (from the shower - no drying) and then once it is all in I scrunch with a tshirt.

I have only used it a few times before. I like Gels with a bit of crunch myself, I think the smell is fine, it looks and feels the same as most drugstore brands but it's drying on my air, I can't use it 2 days in a row, with out moisterizing. I just order a 3b curly cocktail which included CK and I love that. I've have 4 days of well controled curls, I normally don't have too much frizz, just some extra "body" in the ends by the end of the day, but CK seems to have fixed that for me.

I'm not sure what Angell is, but I've been using ArcAngell with the One Conditioner and they seem to work pretty well. I use an amount about the size of a quarter or a bit smaller. It's a lot, but not excessive. The gel has a nice, light consistency, not too sticky. Perhaps it makes a difference that I'm a 3b. My hair has lots of body and is pretty easy to work with.

I tried the Low-poo but I still can't figure it out. It doesn't spread throughout your hair, so you have to put so much on, and then I'm not really sure it's doing anything. I plan to go to the salon next time I need a haircut and see if they can tell me how to use this product.

I like Angell even though it can feel slightly producty. It gives me fat curls with good volume. I used it today on damp hair after Sheamoisture and I feel like I have 2nd day hair, without the frizz. ArcAngell didn't work for me.

I love arcangell the best because It does have a slightly better hold than angell does. But I do go for the angell scent more than the arcangell or devacare line. It also leaves my hair with big full curls as opposed to the stringy kind and I prefer this. I haven't yet found another gel or line that would give me that type of curl.

I used this for years when I first went CG. I like the gel a lot because while I get crunch with it, it is easy to scrunch out. I find its texture good and easy to use. However, I do not think it holds up to humidity. I always had a lot of frizz with it, especially in the summer. A close friend of mine had the same issue--we're both wavy/curlies in humid NYC.

Since when I used Angell I was using only One C and NoPoo, I do NOT think that my hair was undermoisturized; in fact, I now think it was overmoisturized. I never diffused, so that was not the frizz problem.

I cannot say how the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-BLeave-In-p-434.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-bleavein]B'Leave-in[/buylink] and the Set it Free would work in combo with Angell because I never used those--those came along after I'd abandoned the pure Devacurl routine.

Good luck experimenting! I think everyone's curls are different.

I'm curious as to why so many people don't like the "crunchy" texture. There are so many very windy days here in NYC, and something with a little more hold is my only hope. I can travel to work in the wind, and then when I get to work I just toss my head around a few times and work my fingers through the roots, and a lot of the stiffness goes away.

I'm so new here. What is CK?

Yes, I feel the same way! It gets awfully windy here in San Francisco, as well, and when I have to walk to the train station, I am grateful that my hair is "shielded" by the gel cast. I just crunch it out when I get to work. I like it like that. :toothy4:
