Why do you use shampoo?

When I first arrived at these forums, I had only Lorraine Massey's book, CURLY GIRL, as a frame of reference, and I had already sworn off shampoo. But I see that lots of you here seem to use it (the sulfate-free sort, for the most part). My question, though, is why? If we're using water-soluble products, is there really a need for shampoo? Or do you use it just because you feel shampoo is somehow necessary? I'm curious about this and would love to hear your thoughts.

I use a low sulfate or betaine-only cleanser because I still use silicones.

I think there are a variety of reasons why people here still use shampoo. The first is that not everyone follows the CG routine. Some people's location makes it difficult to find CG products, not everyone has the financial resources to purchase high- end products (which aren't necessary but tend to work better), and others have found that CG just doesn't work well with their hair. It's really a matter of choice and what works best for each individual's hair.

Personally, I shampoo about once every 2 weeks or so, and do a ACV rinse in between. It is for a variety of reasons- while most of my products are water- soluble, some, such as my GF curl and shine leave in contain a-cone, which does eventually buildup on my hair. Also, I like to experiment with different combinations of products. If it doesn't work out, I prefer to just shampoo it out and be sure. Finally, despite the fact that my hair is rather curly, it is really quite fine and I have found that my hair responds well to an occasional shampooing, though always sulfate- free (I currently use Activate Hydrating Shampoo).

My hair is fine and always gets overconditioned, droopy & limp if I only use conditioner. Since I also color/highlight my hair, it's very porous and seems to cling to everything, even if I don't use any cones at all. Once I shampoo, my hair just looks better and seems happy again.

Just for a change. I don't like using the same exact product/routine every time.

Same as above-my hair is way too fine to get conditioner near my roots- for whatever reason.

Plus, for CO washes you are supposed to scrub your scalp pretty vigorously. With a gentle shampoo I can just rub it in gently to get a clean result.

LM still recommends using a gentle poo once a week for us w/ wavy hair types. I happen to think that b/c our hair doesn't curl as much our natural oils can travel more easily down the hair shaft, so our hair tends to be less dry.

I didn't use a shampoo at all for about 5 months when I first started CG. My hair was v. dry and v. damaged, and this was just what it needed. But, now that my hair is finally in good condition the CO just lays on my hair and weighs it down. I find that I need to wash more often than recommended (maybe 2 or 3 times/week) in order to avoid being over-conditioned. However, I would never go back to a harsh poo!

For my hair, if I don't shampoo my hair becomes flat. I colour my hair as well, so I suspect that it is more porous than it should be. I tend to shampoo once a week, but I will use the HCC in between.

I think it is all getting to know what works best for your hair ... in different seasons. I don't know that my hair will ever be totally predictable.

If nothing else, you can't say curly hair is boring

Even with the best of intentions and routines, my finer 2C/3A hair gets oily and weighed down if I don't shampoo every 3 or so days. This was true even when I used only water-soluble products. Shampooing gives me back some volume and gets rid of the oil!

If I dont shampoo my hair gets :

    waxy
    tangles more
    looks darker
    looks flat
the waves are more separated and defined, but since its so waxy and gross and flat, it doesnt make it look better

Id rather have clean hair that is light and move more and looks more thick :toothy7:

I think cg is too extreme. The purpose of shampoo is to keep the scalp clean, that's why I'm using it in the first place (sulfate-free poo for regular scalp cleansing). I also started to use silicones again ,so I'll use a sulfate shampoo occasionally. I think pooing is totally fine ,when you do a moisturizing deep treatment afterward.Shampooing too often will dry hair out, but I poo only once a week. IMHO cg is a little overvalued.

I shampoo with a gentle poo once or twice a week. If I don't, my head starts to itch because I have pretty greasy roots. I only shampoo the scalp and just sort of rinse it through the rest of my hair.

I have never fancied going CG, and if I don't wash my hair every day it looks like a dogs dinner.

My hair gets tangly and starts to feel gross if I don't use a gentle sulfate free 'poo.

ROTFL!! I agree. I have to shampoo every other day or I get dirty and greasy feeling. I generally use either elucence MBS, or Devacare low poo and follow with a good conditioner and leave in. Actually, I sometimes think that if I wasnt so lazy I would shampoo daily, since then my hair would look good on the off days too. As it is, i usually ponytail on the off day.

    I shampoo because:

I'm not completely CG, use a couple of 'cones and a polyquat.

I use butters in my hair also. These are not water-soluble.

I tend to need a lot of product, especially rinse out & leave in conditioner. After a while, even when using completely CG products, this begins to build up from the sheer amount of stuff I have to use.

While a lot of posters say that shampooing every now and then stops them from getting greasy, but my hair actually starts to dry out if it doesn't get shampoo every now & again. For me that's every 1-2 months.

My roots tend to look very oily after the second day of no shampoo... even water washing doesn't seem to take the dirty look away. So I shampoo with a gentle cleanser to make my hair look fresher.

My hair, despite my best efforts, absorbs my stylers, so every couple of weeks or so I like to shampoo.

I was shampooing 2-3x weekly when I joined this forum, then once a week, now, on an as needed basis (once every ten days or so).

Now that I know how to treat my hair, it's in such good shape that it tends to be over-conditioned. I've been using gentle products (no sulfates, no terrible silicones) for over a year now. I find I need to shampoo about every other day, or my hair gets limp and flat. Lately I've been skipping leave-in conditioner, too. I don't know if that's due to the cooler weather, or if it's something about my hair(?) I have learned that I can never assume I have my routine down pat. Just as soon as I think "this is it", something mysterious happens that requires a change. Like now that I've written that I'm not using leave-ins, I'll have to start doing so again!:)

I don't even know, lol. I have a sulfate-free poo and I don't use silicones but sometimes my hair just feels dirty and producty, so I use it then. I shampooed today and I actually had a good hair day. But it's true, I'm CG and I still 'poo.

I have to shampoo or my ends get really gunky with just conditioner. I was strict CG for awhile and my hair started looking really dirty even after I washed it. I also have very porious color treated fine hair. When I started CG it was just what my hair needed because it had been damaged and it needed all that moisture but now thats its gotten healthier I had to go back to shampoo.

I use a [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Hair-Cleansing-Cream-p-103.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-hair-cleansing-cream]Jessicurl HCC[/buylink], because sometimes I find that when I'm testing out a new condish, if I don't like the outcome/results I feel like I want to "start over fresh" or perhaps I get that itchy scalp too. I like the HCC anyway because it makes my hair so silky. I've never had that before in a poo.
Plus, although rare, I do occasionally overcondition and I don't like the results from ACV(stinky) or BS(drying) scrub/rinses.
