Boots Curl Cream has been discontinued - need ideas

PigletPiglet Posts: 1,451Registered Users
I'm not happy. Not happy at all. I hasn't been on the shelves for a while, and today I asked in the store when it would be back, and they said it has been discontinued.

Does anyone have any good ideas on what to use on thick, frizzy, very prone to fluffiness curly hair? I'm looking mainly for products I can get in England, but if I get desperate I'll have to stump up the cash to pay for the shipping from the States. I need a lot of hold in this cold weather.

Many many products over here contain silicones, petrolatum and mineral oil. I'll only go near dimethicone copolyol.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I am glad I never got it because I am sure it would have worked beautifully and now I would be in a panic. Dodged that bullet.

Oh lord, this board is going to go into a frenzy!!!

    Not good.

These companies need to realize discontinuing some of these products is only doing more harm than good!

I have been happily using Boots cream for a few years but in the last month my hair seems to have suddenly gone off it - maybe it knew!

Due to my hair going off the Boots cream, I am currently in an experimental phase, trying out different alternatives available in the UK. Paul Mitchell Round Trip is quite good, although it does contain a silicone but apparently a water soluble one. Other things that I have to try are Bumble & Bumble curl cream, Aveda Be Curly and Paul Mitchell mousse; also thinking of trying but need to check the ingredients - Toni & Guy Soft Curl Cream, Toni & Guy Twist it Curl Balm and Charles Worthington Results Curl Definition Cream. It will take me a while to try these and could be expensive, although some do small sizes and I have lots of Boots Advantage points to use up.

At the moment I have returned to Frizz Ease mousse, as this is what I used before the Boots cream and I had forgotten until I looked at an old photo what good results it gave me.

Also - there have been scares before when people have been told by Boots staff that the cream has been discontinued but they have been incorrect and it has returned a few weeks later. Oh, and I have two full and one almost full tubs of Boots cream in my cupboard, which I may donate to someone if I can find a good enough replacement!

It's true that Boots cream might return, but in the meantime, it's probably wisest to assume it won't be coming back, and plan accordingly. I'm mightily fed up as my hair had been looking great. Right now, I'm playing around with Pantene cream, Pantene mousse and Tresemme mousse - none of which appear to know the meaning of 'hold'.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm thinking now that there may be a good few who need substitutes.

CurlyAgain - I'm thinking of trying Joico mousse and Paul Mitchell mousse. I don't know yet what the ingredients listing is. I'm also seriously considering trying Aveda Be Curly. The only draw back is the silicone in it, but I still might try it anyway. Perhaps with it being a different silicone it might not make my hair flat and yucky.

This product has been said to be "discontinued" how many times now? Have lost count. This is one of my staples as well. I went to britsuperstore.com & it says out of stock, so it is possible, but I am not going to panic just yet.

Whether it is coming back or not (and I remember when it went missing off the shelves before) my hair looks rubbish while I try to find something else. That stuff was my winter holy grail and my hair is very problematic.

Ah that would explain why I've not been able to find any in the 6 or so Boots stores near me. Rats.

What!!?! I couldn't find any in the biggest store near me, but in the one near my town they were selling 3 for 2 so I bought them. Does anyone have any news about this?????

There wasn't any in a large store near to me either, just an empty shelf, where it had been... I guess that they could be changing/replacing it - at one point a few years ago, Boots had three different own-brand curl creams, the pink, the Botanicals and another one in a tube that I used to use but I can't remember what range it was - all with very similar ingredients but the two white ones were more expensive, so maybe it's now too much of a bargain they're planning to replace it with something more expensive!

Curly52 - I'm not sure whether any of the products that I listed are CG as I don't follow CG - I wash with sulphates as that suits my hair better, I can't use shampoo with silicones but for styling products it depends on the product. I think that it depends on whether you consider water soluble silcones CG, in which case, I think that the Round Trip is. Also, the Aveda Be Curly that I have doesn't appear to contain silicones - see below.

Piglet - I have some Aveda Be Curly, a small size in a grey container, that I bought a couple of months ago but I can't see any silicones in it. If you get desperate, you can have one of my remaining tubs of the Boots curl cream, as I don't think that I'll use them - PM me with your address and I'll send it to you.

    Amazing Boots Curl Creme

A review by freya.winner on Boots Essentials Curling Cream
    November 4th, 2007

    Author's product rating:

    Value for Money Excellent
    Long Lasting? Long Lasting
    Smoothing? yes
    Conditioning? yes

Advantages: Good value, Actually works to define gorgeous natural curls
Disadvantages: Rushes of the shelves !

    Recommend to potential buyers: yes

    Full review

Boots Curl Creme is the most amazing product for shiny frizz-free natural curls as well as being great value for money. Ive tried 100s of the most expensive salon-developed products and found nothing which remotely compares. Used as a leave-in conditioner on damp hair you can twist curls with your fingers for perfect definition which lasts until you wash the product out. Use less product on dry hair to tame frizz. Hair is left light and glossy unlike the dull, coated effect often produced by similar products. Curly friends and family agree that the effectiveness and value for money is hard to beat.

The only disadvantage is that its always out of stock. Being a hugely popular choice among the curly community i find it difficult to understand why Boots are considering withdrawing this wonder product and have already done so in some smaller stores. Buy Boots Essentials Curl Creme!
Which I just found on Ciao :@ :(

They don't sell either of the white Boots creams anymore. The one that I used, they replaced with a straightening cream in identical packaging - I bought some by accident and used for a while, and couldn't work out why my hair was acting so strangely until I noticed the word straightening on the tube!

I went into my local very small Boots store today and they still had the curling cream, only a couple of tubs but that's all they usually have.

I also had a look at the ingredients for the Toni & Guy Soft Curl Cream and Twist It Curl Balm - neither appear to contain silicones but I'm not sure whether that qualifies them as CG. I got some of the Twist It Curl Balm to try, quite expensive at £4.99 but I had lots of Boots points so got it for free.

Now I just need to find time to experiment with the products that I keep buying, too risky on a work day as I need to look presentable!

I have the twist it curl balm, it's ok but it really can only be used as a cream on top of another. To me it smells like mould :s ew

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have fortunately found a good combination. I am using Pantene curl cream, with Pantene curl mousse on top and Boots purple gel over that. I can get good second day hair with it. Hopefully the Boots curl cream will return though.

I think Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer is quite similar. I use it sometimes and get rave reviews. I pretend it doesn't have silicones in it, though. I didn't every check on the silicone because I didn't want to have to stop using it, but is it a bad one?

Is Boots pink curl creme even CG? It's got a load of alcohol in it which is a no-no to CG... otherwise I'd buy it by the bucket load.

It has cetyl alcohol and stearyl alchohol which aren't drying alcohols, their fatt ones. Boots is a very moisturizing product.
