I have a questiion about coconut oil

DocDoc Posts: 367Registered Users
I've heard so many good things about coconut oil on this site that I went to my local health food store to get some but all they had was a jar of solid oil. Is this the only form it comes in? I thought I read that some curlies were mixing it with water and spitzing with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

It can be used in solid or liquid form. It has a low melting point, so if already not a liquid, the solid could melt in your hands. I believe the melting point is something like 76 degrees.

hey there, i'm probably one of the girls you saw using this with water ;). coconut oil is highly saturated therefore it will be solid at room temp. however, just as cutetootie said, its had a very low melting point so you can just stick it in the shower with you or run it under some warm water to liquify it. i like it use it when it's solid because it's a lot easier to work with and it won't run and get all over the place. rub some in between your hand and spread it on your hair.

for the coconut oil and water spray mixture, this is what i do... i fill up a water bottle with warm/hot water and drop in about a tablespoon or so of oil. it's about a 1:4 ratio. shake it up really well and if the oil hasn't melted fully, just hold the bottle under hot water. just spray it all over and style from there. this is basically my spray leave in condish after i wash my hair and i spray it during and after i style my hair. i spray this on my hair to wake up my curls for 2nd day hair and beyond and my hair looks like the first day just fuller. i love it!! i can last about 1 week without having the redo my hair. i hope this helps :)

Does coconut oil have a coconut smell or any smell?

It barely has a smell at all. I am thinking of adding a perfume oil to mine.

Virgin Coconut oil has a smell, fractionated and refined and deoderized coconut oil(either 76 or 92 degree) doesn't have a smell. And they are both extracted differently.
A wonderful mix of coils, curls, corkscrews, and kinks.

I have virgin coconut oil and it has a slight smell, but I dont really care for it a whole lot, but the moisture I get from is great. So I just deal with it.

Thanks for posting about Coconut Oil.
I had an old jar hanging around the house....(like a good year old ) and decided to try it, what's the harm, right?
So I mixed it with some LA wetlook gel in a small empty yogurt cup. I worked it in the back of my hair, but didn't like the way it felt.
So I gave that up and just put the pure oil in the rest of my hair, two-strand twist and set on perm rods and let it air dry. Oh my goodness... my hair has never been so soft and shiny before..even in the back with the gel/oil-parts.I'm getting a lot of looks (no commments) but I know this look is rocking...ringlets and all!!! :dance:dance.gif
Thanks again everybody  Man, I love this website...
    Pure addiction

I purchased mine from an online specialty retailer(specialize in essential oil, butters, etc). I use virgin coconut oil(organic). It kinda reminds me of a light smelling cake frosting. Not too sweet smelling...... very subtle and smells delicious. I just gave my hair a nice dt earlier today using coconut oil, avocado oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, and honey, and my hair is still thanking me. :) The remaining mixture was then combined with some brown sugar, and became a nice body scrub/polisher.
