Changes as hair grows out?

DaBoogieDownCurlyDaBoogieDownCurly Posts: 16Registered Users
I am 3b/c and I have been trying to let my hair grow out from a shorter style. It has basically stayed in the same layered style as it has grown out and the last trim I got was probably in January.

It is layered with the shortest layer growing out from eye level to cheek/chin level when dry and the longest layer growing from shoulder length to maybe half way btwn shoulder and BSL.

I have noticed that my hair loses curl definition as it grows longer which I don't like. However I do love the variety of things I can do with my hair and how it looksgood down and it's better up in a ponytail and in a fatter bun than when my hair was shorter -the only way it looked good was down.

So my question is, are there any special care tips I should do for my hair? I just bought some shea butter and cocnut oil and jojoba oil so I'll be experimenting with these. My hair is at the longest I've had it for few years now so I feel a little lost. So any tips/advice/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks :D

I'm not sure what advice to provide since your question is kind of broad/general, but I am noticing that my curls seem kind of stretched out too as my hair is growing out... Lately, I'm not sure what to think of my curl pattern or texture... But as long as it is touchable and presentable/frizz free, I am a happy camper.

Post some pictures, why dontcha... To inspire us

thanks for the reply... yea I know my queston is broad, I just don't know what specifically I wnat to improve... I do wish I had more definition especially in the back... and I also just want to make sure that I care for my longer hair properly so it grows healthily... Thanks again though for your reply.

Well, you mention wanting more defintion in the back and proper care for your hair as it grows, to keep it healthy.

For definition, I would advise maybe a curl enhancer (like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Rockin-Ringlets-Styling-Potion-p-100.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-rockin-ringlets]Jessicurl Rockin Ringlets[/buylink] or Curls Curl Enhancing lotion) followed by a good, moisturizing, medium hold gel (check out Laurabeth's gel thread for ideas, if you don't have a favorite).

As for keeping it healthy, I think that moisture is key, including overnight moisturizing sometimes or DTs.. You also might want to play around with protective styles. I know that Amneris does a lot of that and has been experiencing some primo hair growth. Cehua too, I think.

Let's see if others weigh in too

I've been having great luck with my hair this summer, trying to swim in natural water whenever possible. Have not had a cut or trim since 2/3/05 so hopefully it is getting longer. I had a great hair day today (yesterday) 7/6/05- the previous night i washed with suave co and then used elucence, left in about 1/4 to 1/2, put on boots white stuff, [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curly-Hair-Solutions-Curl-Keeper-p-28.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=curly-hair-solutions-curl-keeper]curl keeper[/buylink] and angell or some other light one. then woke up with good hair in the morning. then i went hiking and sweated like crazy, jumped in the lake and swam for at least 30 min, wet my hair thoroughly in the lake water and just used some boots white stuff and put it back in a pineapple and hiked back about 2 hrs. i put photos of the day up in a new album summer 2005 on the fotki site below. I am trying to figure out if my hair looks longer than in april, but there is so much shrinkage now that it is really curling again. I am amazed that i have so much curl now--never thought i would (or would want it) until doing CG and getting all these great tips on nc.com. yes indeed i have posted some rather ugly pictures of myself to show the curls--must be a CG!!
    thank u all!!

Yea I figured more moisture which is why I got some shea butter, coconut oil and jojoba oil... I really liked the jojoba mixed with my leave in (suave green apple for right now). My hair is soft and pretty well defined.

I think that now that I have more hair, I have to be sure to distribute my gel (loving Fantasia IC gel with sparkle lites) better- maybe that would help the curl definition. Once I put in gel I usually scrunch it after I raked the product through but I noticed that I do not really get to the back which is the real length of my hair. Today the curls in the top most layers and near my face are cute and chunky but the back has thinner curls. Will experiment next time I do my hair.
