Spin Off: Hair Types: Whose Pictures? Please Participate!

Mrfhnl reminded us that the Andre Hair Type pictures are a little confusing and need to be updated.

If Gretchen and Michelle agree that we can update the pictures, the question is which picture should we use.

So, if we were to update the “hair type” photos would you prefer to see pictures of celebrities or pictures of our very own NC.com members.

If you chose "heck yes", would you be interested in a contest to choose which two NC.com member's hair picture(s) to post per hair type?

We need two curlies in order to represent that hair type at a short length and that hair type at a long length (as we all know the look of the curl changes with length).

If you do not like the idea of a contest, how would you choose the NC.com member?

Thanks for voting. 8)

ETA: What do you think of one of these ideas (post comments below)?

Perhaps on the current Hair Type thread (the one with the link to the pictures) we could put links to the individual hair type threads that posted pictures.

For example, when people go HERE there will be links to 3c Pictures and other hair types (as far as I know only 3c and 3bs have pictures).

Does that make sense?

This way may be easier than trying to find new pictures of hair types.

OR

Or we could have stickies on each hair type forum for the purpose of allowing NC.com posters to post pictures of their AND celebrity's hair (sort of like what we have on the 3c thread).

this won't let me vote, but...

I think that's a good idea. I don't know about a contest - I know the intent is to find the most representative hair of a type, not necessarily the nicest or best hair, but it might feel that way to some people and this site is supposed to be building everyone up. I think there should be a few pictures per type, to show the range, and there should be examples of "mixes" since so many people here fall into this ie. 3b/c, 3a/b, 4a/b and 2/3a. Otherwise, count out people like me who mess with their hair and aren't a "true" anything.

Just an idea, but what about showing pictures of 2/3? There are many curly wavies on here, and it can be confusing to know whether you are a 2, 3 or 2/3. On the same line, I think it would be really helpful to have some really good pictures of 3A and wavy hair for people to be able to tell which hair type they have.

Also (just an idea), what about having pictures of the different letters for wavy hair, like 2A, 2B and 2C?

Or that might be too many pictures...

I think that using NC.com members would be great, if the relevant people were agreeable.

You cannot vote? What do you see when you open this thread? I voted with no problem.......

The “contest” is NOT to choose the person who has the *best looking* or *most beautiful* hair because we all know that everyone on this site has gorgeous hair. 8)

I only suggested a contest in the event that Michelle and Gretchen get flooded with pictures of that hair type. Also, some people say they are one hair type and according to Andre’s definition that we use on this site their hair belongs in a different category.

I also think we should leave out the “in between” people and choose the pictures that *most* represent Andre’s definition. It is not the hair picture’s job to show all of the ranges; people can do that on their own threads (e.g., the 3b and 3c threads have pictures of hair types). It gets too complicated if you show all of the ranges and mixes.

I think if there are only a few pics, we should stick to celebrities. No one is going to agree on anyone else's hair type anyway and it's more objective to use celebrities (fancy hair dressing and all.) I think Nc.com members would be better if showing ranges but if it is only for what, 5, 6 pics, then we should just find the best, most representative celebs.

new thought - to give everyone a chance, avoid competitiveness/favouritism and show a range of hair, how about rotating the pics every week/month to show a few different people? So there could be several 3as, bs etc. who get shown and maybe the mixes can then choose their more dominant type and be shown as within that range.

That is what I was thinking too.....but yeah, that may be too many pictures. LOL

You wavies could do what we did on the 3b and 3c threads. We posted pictures of people who have our hair type.

Right now, there are only celebrities but it would be awesome if we could get our NC.com members to post their picture there (even if it is the back of the hair).

Perhaps on the current Hair Type thread (the one with the link to the pictures) we could put links to the individual hair type threads that posted pictures.

I just voted for celebreties, but I would be happy to see our very own curlies as exemplars too, if they give permission 8) Rotating, per Amneris, also is a good idea...

    Our own NC.com curlies definately.

That way others can get info and ask questions about a particular types products and routines. Two or three pictures as a sticky under each hairtype would keep it obvious. Gretchen and Michelle picking the photos (sorry guys, not looking to give you more work) satifies the impartiality issue.

With the celeb option all we know is that a stylist can make them look good.

Amneris’ idea is good too. Would it be too much work for Gretchen, Michelle, and the web designers to rotate the pictures?

I voted for NC.com members, since members' hair is not only gorgeous, but probably a better representation of how natural 2/3/4 hair looks (without the help of a full-time hair stylist).

BTW, the 3c thread that Cehua linked makes me sooo jealous!! That's my *dream* hair, but I will never achieve it, since my hair is definitely only 3a.

I agree with Plink and badgercurls and you Cehua! I voted for nc.com members because as Plink said, we can then ask specific questions if someones hair looks great. Also as Plink and badgercurls said, we know we are our own stylists!!

This is definitely a great idea.

I'm also neutral. As long as the pics represent each respective hair type(and maybe even the types in between), then I'm fine. But if I have to chose, I'd probably prefer seeing pictures of NC.com members.

Also, if you post, do not forget to chime in on the idea (see first post with edits) you think would work the best for posting pictures (NC.com members or celebrities). That may help the NC.com founders choose an idea if they decide to update the hair type pictures.

I think we should update the system first, before we think of pictures ...

    It should focus on:

Curl/Wave Pattern and Tightness ( I don't understand why type 1abc and 2abc focus on the thickness of the strand, while 3abc and 4ab focus on the tightness or looseness of the pattern)
Density (the amout of strands on the head)
Thickness (the width of each indivdual strand)

    Baby steps.... :)

I think a lot of people would agree with this. There are other systems that sort address these issues (FIA and LOIS although this one is sort of confusing too) and some people on this site use them.

And I am sure our NC.com members could think of a better hair typing system to describe curly hair.

However to make things easier/more consistent, the majority of people on this site use the Andre's Hair Typing system. It has it quirks but I think it does the job that Andre intended it to do........it is not an exact science. LOL

Besides, it may confuse people if the system is revamped all of a sudden.

I think LOIS is intended mainly for people with some sort of African heritage so it probably wouldn't address all the curlies here, anyway. Fia would probably work well.

Wow..look where this went...way to go! I voted for nc.com curlies as the whole stylist thing can be misleading....half the curly celebs are straighties with good salons! And although asking those pictured for their routines is a tempting idea.....Plink, can you imagine how many PMs you would get if you were the 3B model?! But hey, we're all here to help eachother and real girls with real curls seem to be the way to go!

I am not sure if you were addressing me or popculturecouture but since I mentioned LOIS (ourhair.net) and FIA (from the longhaircommunity) I will reply.

Nope, I do not think LOIS is for every type of hair. I just wrote it in as an example of how other people have addressed the density and texture issue.

For pictures, I think it is better to stick with Andre's system since that is well known on this site and not very complicated.
