Has anyone tried extensions?

csbcsb Posts: 225Registered Users
My hair is too short, too thinned out, and looks like crap. I have to straighten everyday, because otherwise the thinned out areas would look bald with little curls in between.. I know extensions are supposed to cause stress to the hair, etc., but I'm miserable. Has anyone tried them? Are the great or horrible?

I had sew-in extensions and paid $150 and kept them in for about 1 mth. I loved them and they were really pretty.
I didn't keep them though because I got too much of a negative reaction from a lot of people. But it def was worth the cost and time to have long, long hair. I didn't have any extra damage from them.

Have you thought about having the ends trimmed and using a good volumizing mousse?

My hair is just way too short and thined out right now to even think about cutting it any more. It's very healthy, just poorly cut.

My hair was only a few inches long when they did the sew-ins. They basically do corn-rows and then sew the hair extensions on. I didn't have any damange when they were removed. I've also had just corn-row braids with synthetic hair and I absolutely loved them but had an allergic reaction to the hair. You can also have it done with real human hair.

I wish you luck and I'm sorry I wasn't able to help or give good advice.

It's not a lack of good advice, I just think I need to leave my hair alone for a bit.

Really? What did they say? I'm just curious - I've never heard of people having negative reactions to hair extensions. Well, I take that back. I've noticed some black women will put down black women like Beyonce who wear extensions. They'll be accused of giving into white beauty ideals, especially if the extensions are straight. I've never heard of white women getting heat for wearing extensions, though (I'm just assuming you're white from your avatar).

That's what I've had to do with my hair...just leave it alone and let it grow!

Yes, I'm white and I got a lot of negative reaction because it's usually black woman in my area (Georgia, USA) that have hair extensions and braids. I got sent home from work because my boss didn't think it was an appropriate look. I asked, "Is this because I'm white." He couldn't/wouldn't answer it. I think that's a bunch of BS because it's about personal choice to me and I liked them. I should have just told people to mind their own business or I should just have ignored them!

I'm in Georgia, too---Savannah. Have you found a good curly stylist?

Yes, I found a nice one at a local JC Penny's. She's a natural curly who colors and cut her own hair and it's beautiful. She has the same kind of curls/texture as my hair. She's the one who's encouraging and helping me to grow out to my desired length and to not color because I want to be 100% natural.

Where do you live? I don't like to drive forever, but a good cut might be worth it.

That bites. I don't see how anyone can get away with calling long hair an inappropriate look, unless it's dyed blue or something. I guess his casa, his rules, but geez.

That's very strange. Just because it was long? I wonder what he objected to. A shame you couldn't have fought that.

It was long (way past my bra strap) and my natural hair was very, very short. I just think he was being a jerk.

The JC Penny's is in LaGrange, Ga is the West Commerce Mall.
