To scrunch or not to scrunch

I get the best curls right before my hair is completely dry. When I fluff and scrunch the crunch (what there is of it) my curls look great for about a nanosecond. Does anyone out there NOT scrunch? If you do scrunch, and your curl tends to lose definition and clumping, what do you do to retain it? I've been using SMU spray gel but it's not enough to give my curls hold and hair spray's not an option *sigh* maybe I'm asking for the impossible. TIA

Have you tried squeezing the curls together to get rid of the crunch and smoothing your hands over your hair? That works for me.

BTW, I hope your happy that the Rockies just beat the Phils. :sad5: I swear, if we lose game three someone is gonna jump of the Walt Whitman bridge and a whole mob of fans will burn Citizen's Bank Park.

I've been scrunching the crunch out with Redken Fresh Curls Anti Frizz Shiner. This stuff rocks. It gets the crunch out, adds shine and is actually curl enhancing too. I get a few extra spirals by finishing with this stuff. The bad news is it's cone heavy and expensive and it's a tiny little can.

Expense doesn't bother me, the cones do...:( Thanks, though, appreciate the reply

I scrunch when my hair is wet and when it gets to the point where I'm happy with the way my curls look, I don't touch it again until it's completely bone dry; then I lean over to each side and very gently scrunch. I know you said you were liking the Sebastian Hi Contrast gel -- are you using that plus using the SMU spray gel on top? If so, that could be too much and causing your curls to fall. I would think if you're using enough Hi Contrast in wet hair before styling, that would be enough hold. I don't know because I've never used the SHC, but from what I've read it's a firm hold gel. Just a thought.

ETA: If you don't end up with much crunch and you really like the way it looks when it dries, I wouldn't bother scrunching it out.

You know, you're prob right, Ms G. I'm not very liberal with the SHCG application, too much crunch kinda freaks me out and Seb has very crunchy potential. I'll just go for it tomorrow morning and see what happens.

Do you use gel or are you getting crunch some other way?

If you get a lot of crunch, I get the impression from others who are using this that at least it's pretty easy to scrunch out the crunch when it's dry. I hope it works for you.

I have found that since I have started scrunching my hair when it's dry with a tshirt I get much better hair. I dont know why but it cannot hurt to try it. Good luck.

I can't not scrunch. My hair dries very crunchy, wet-looking, and kind of ummm... noodly? Is that a word?

I look like a hot mess if I don't scrunch!

I agree - my hair looks odd if not scrunched. Wet and very thin. I need to scrunch to get some volume and less scalp spots!

I use SMU gel in the tube and not very much of it. Just a bit more than pea size. But, I have fine, thin hair. I diffuse right after scrunch the gel in until it's about 1/2 dry, then let it sit for a while. I'll put makeup on etc. I then turn upside down and scrunch - scrunching curls up towards my scalp. Then right side up and scrunch a bit more and diffuse a bit more.
The curls last all day long.

What would us fine thin gals do with/out a diffuser? I guess have limpy wimpy curls?

Me, too. GOTTA scrunch! In fact, if I don't have a lot of crunch to scrunch, I'm not going to have any curls that last longer than a minute.

Even us fine thick girls can't leave without a diffuser. Perish the thought! :confused2:

OK, so I wasn't applying enough Seb Hi-Con, last two days have been better with scrunching the crunch and yes, the more crunch to scrunch the better my curls hold.

 I'm glad it's working better for you. I wish I could get away with no crunch myself, but I need it to get the hold, too.

Works great, EXCEPT, I get protein build up so I can't use Seb all the time, arrrggg! Now, I'm on the hunt for protein free gels, I swear, if it's not one thing it's another. :banghead:

Tell me about it! This curly thing can be quite frustrating sometimes. Are you still staying strictly CG and just co-washing? Is it still working for you?

HA! That is a good question today, because (again) I've pulled the curl mess back into a bun.

This AM, tried [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/AG-Recoil-p-24.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=ag-hair-cosmetics-recoil-curl-activator]re:coil[/buylink] on [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Gelebration-Spray-p-101.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-gelebration-spray]gelebration[/buylink] with a dab of CK, NOT a great combo for me. I'm not giving up though, I told myself a month so we'll see. Tomorrow, I'm going strictly jessicurl and will co-wash w/ my new bottle of Vo5 (hee hee).

Thanks for asking, are you tempted to give CG a twirl, ehm, I mean whirl?

No, haven't tried that combination yet, maybe later today or tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. Pinksugar - Does [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/AG-Recoil-p-24.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=ag-hair-cosmetics-recoil-curl-activator]re:coil[/buylink] frizz you out if you don't apply gel on top?

I've never tried it without gel. I don't get any frizz with the combination so I haven't tried it without yet.

Oh no, I've already tried my stint at giving strict CG a whirl over a year ago when I first started here and I do much better being "modified". I knew you had started trying CG so was just wondering how it was going for you.
