Help! At what point to get a trim when growing hair longer?

I've been trim-less since the end of January(the longest I've gone without a haircut for many years), except for trimming my own bangs. I've got some loss of shape going on, plus some raggedness on the ends and easy tangling of same, but I'm afraid to sacrifice any length right now. I realized the raggedy-ness and loss of shape when I combed out my hair and didn't apply any product on it after shampooing(this was prior to my recent coloring job at home). The back is now just below the shoulders, and the front pieces are nearing shoulder length in some places. Using gel(which I usually do anyway to enhance curl with my mixed-texture hair) hides the loss of shape somewhat, but I just don't know for how much longer! My hair is not really long enough to do anything other than use a headband/or rolled and tied bandanna thing to tie it back from my face. I tried doing a pony tail, but it looks awful, like an uneven brush, plus there are ends that aren't long enough to go into this! What to do - get a trim and sacrifice an inch or so, or look funky for another few months?

I'm going every 4-6 weeks for a trim. My ends are uneven from breakage and still have a bit of relaxed. I'm cutting about 1/4-1/2" in layers and it's helping my hair curl better and not go through the pineapple phase. :afro:

How short was your hair when you started growing it out, and how long is it now, and how many months have you been on the "growing out" project? With getting trims that often(I didn't even get my hair cut every 4-6 weeks even when I was keeping it shorter, more like every 7-8 weeks, 10 at the very most)is your hair growing noticeably?

What is the point of growing it out if you don't like the way it looks? I struggle with the same thing, but the bottom line is that as much as I'd like it to be long, I want it to look GOOD too. If you think you really need to go ahead!

My hair seems to be thinning out at the ends, too. I'm just so paranoid that some stylist is going to cut too much! I would find a reputable person, or maybe a friend that you can trust with your hair. If the ends are damaged now, it'll probably travel up your hair shaft and you'll have to cut off more later.

The long hair forums do not recommend frequent trims if you are trying to grow your hair long. For me, I am doing twice a year professional deva cuts to keep my shape nice, and in between I do "search and destroy" missions. I basically use professional stylist sissors (that I use ONLY for my hair) and cut off the split ends as I see them. My hair seems to have grown a lot this year and I haven't had an issue of having split ends. In fact, my shape from my last deva cut (done first week of February) looks good still.
3B with some 3a. Fell off but am now back on the CG bandwagon and looking for my HG products.

    1) My hair was very short, Longest layer 7.5", shortest 1.5" (growing out a bob). I'm not measuring lenght anymore but I am measuring growth. Almost 2" in the last 10 weeks.
2)almost 10 weeks since my last haircut and color, 8 mths since my last relaxer.
    3) I'm getting it trimmed more and more often then I would I normally because I have a lot of damage (dry, frizzy ends too much color too much heat).

My hair grows about 3/4" of an inch per month. I'm gaining noticeable lenghth in the back. The sides are getting trimmed to 1) Get ride of damage 2) catch up the length with the back.
