Wondering...

I understand these are VERY personal questions, and if you don't feel comfortable actually writing a response but would be okay answering the poll question, please do. I'll periodically bump it.

I will tell you that I was sexually abused from the time I was six unitl I was almost 10.

I was also assaulted by two men (but not raped) in a funhouse when I was 14.

I was 4. I suppressed the memory until I took a pshych class and did dream analysis of a recurring dream. Interestingly (unfortunately) this happened not long after I was raped as a 14 yo virgin.

I swear to God - anyone touches my child I will kill them with my bare hands.

DW was molested at 12. From where we stand now I would say there are no lingering effects and she seems to shrug it off. It was actually a family member who is still in the family and Christmas still go off. Of course there are no hugs with the hellos.

My mom was molested by a distant relative for years. It deeply affected her. So much that she never let us do sleep overs or go to camp, like other kids. She trusted no one with us, not even our own father. It's heartbreaking what something like that will do to a child.

Not to say this will happen to your wife AT ALL.

I was fine until I turned 30. I never forgot it, but I always said that I was "over it." At 30 my daughter was 9, and I guess it for some reason it really got me thinking or something... I don't know. I fell apart, got really depressed, and became bulimic and anorexic. It took a couple years and Prozac for me to get better... really, really better.

My Grandfather. No intercourse, unappropriate kissing and touching from ? too young - 14. He died over 20 years ago, but he was a real "dirty old man." (He'd lick his lips before he would kiss his "Grandbabies") . He was a big man with big meaty hands and it makes my skin crawl when I see men with those kind of hands. I still have lingering effects from it.

yup - from about age 5-9. One was an adult family member/good friend of the family. No intercourse but inappropriate touching, exposing, etc.

The others (yes plural) were teen cousins in their early teens. Not surprisingly all of them have ended up in prison or dead. It ate at me for a long time then in my early twenties I recommitted to my faith and it included giving up the pain, anger and blame. While I don't trust these people I have moved on.

I haven't told my father because one cousin is still alive and I actually fear he'll do physical harm. Fortunately my father doesn't trust this guy. I did tell my mother because I have kids now and should something happen to them I NEVER want my kids to be left alone with said person or even near them.

She was devastated when I told her. My mom paid a private van service to pick up us up and take us to a babysitter in the mornings before school and same for the afternoons. Our school was at the corner of the block but she felt better doing it this way. My dad never let us sleep over at other peoples houses and my grandfather always told my mother the only men you trust is their FATHER.

She always gave us the talk about appropriate touching, etc. but the abusers were using scare tactics and my parents had a rough patch in their marriage that made me (the oldest) want to smooth things over and make everything all right.

I told my husband sometime around our first month of dating. I didn't know how it would affect me in a serious relationship so I wanted him to know. Thankfully it has no effect on our marriage. My mom wondered why I told my husband and I told her that it was definitely NOT something I was going to keep from the person who shares a life with me. NEVER.

I don't want to be ashamed or hide it because I did nothing wrong.

So far the responses are defying the satistics.

One in four women were molested as children.

I was not molested as a child, but as a social worker, I see it all the time. The sheer numbers of people abused as children is staggering. It is getting more and more rare nowadays to come from a home where you were not sexually or physically abused as a child.

point being, what exactly? This is not a controlled sampling but an interesting observation about the makeup of this board and I think everyone who responded realizes that. Are you just trying to negate the topic?

Too small a sample to get expected results.
