Hey,
Fellow curly girls, I'm new and not familar with co-washing. I don't know what the guidelines are. Can someone please give me a list of what ingredients should not be in the products? I haven't come across any products that say silicone per se! I have a few products that I have been using can you tell me if they are okay?

1.Infusium 23 (moistur)ologie & (repair)ologie.
2.Cantu shea butter
3.Queen Helene Cholesterol w/ ginseng
4. Natures Advantage Honey & Almond This product contains : water, cetyl Alcohol, steralkonium chloride, honey, sweet almond oil, hydrolyzed keratin, apple extract, propylene glycol, dicetyldimonium chloride, fragrance, citric acid, polymethoxy bicyclic oxazolidine, blue #1,Yellow#5,red#4,33.

Please, let me thank you in advance for all your help. I'm currently in the process of growing out my perm. I have about 5 inches of new growth. It seems like my hair is taking forever to grow. I thought that by adopting this new method it would make my hair health improve so it could grow!

Welcome! You'll find lots of useful information here. Here's a link with more info about the Curly Girl method.

I think you'll get some preliminary answers to your questions. Also check out the Transitioning forum to trade tips with other ladies who are transitioning from relaxed to natural.

Sounds like you are doing good so far. I grew out my perm over 17 months before cutting away the relaxed hair and I've learned so much about how to take care of my hair from these forums.

    Good luck!

    missmonie,

I thankyou, for your response and the link. It tells me all the good things to look for in a CO - wash but It still doesn't give me details of what shouldnt be in the conditioner. How do I identify if an ingrediant is a silicone? and which oils aren't good?

I'm hanging in here. I want to do the BC , but the length of my hair vs the shape of my round face at this point to me is not so attractive right now! Is that why you grew out your hair for 17 months? I see so many CG who look so nice with the TWA. I wish I could look that good with it!
Thanks, again for your info. I appreciate it. I know that Knowledge is Power!

Here's the link to silicones. You should avoid these in your conditioner and styling products if you want to follow the curly girl routine: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlcolumns/articles.php?id=5341

Also, I believe the only oil that's bad is petrolatum. You'll also see different names for this including mineral oil and Paraffinum Liquidum. I use natural oils like Jojoba and butters including Shea Butter based products.

Hang in there! You should have a good amount of growth by now since you're almost at the one year mark. My only regret about not cutting my hair sooner is that I damaged my hair a bit from flat ironing/pressing during the transition.

    1.Infusium 23 (moistur)ologie & (repair)ologie.
    2.Cantu shea butter

    Welcome!

I'm sure the Cantu has silicone and #1 may. Some silicones are dimethicone, dimethiconol, amodimethicone, cyclopentisiloxane, lots more. Check the list. Not all silicones are bad; some can be washed out with water or a non-sulfate shampoo. If the have a peg-xx before them, that means the cone is water soluble.

The product whose ingredients you listed? Looks okay.

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.

    Hi LadyJAH,

Thanks ,alot for this info. It did help me to fill in a few missing blanks. I'm so glad that you shared this info with me! I like that fact that they give a more un scientific explaination about some of the ingredients. This will be useful to me. It's good to know CG's stick together! Knowledge is a definite power.
