I am certainly not an expert on plopping - I found using a towel or t-shirt very difficult to plop with. I ended up ordering a microfibre turban and it is easy to use and get good curls all over with. I think I used to mess up my hair trying to get the towel secured on my head, with the turban it has an easy button closure so I am not fumbling around.

I always have to clip my cowlick, or i look like I have a baldspot no matter what i do. I just take some hair from both sides of the cowlick and clip them together.

Same here - I always have to check out the back of my head to make sure that area is good to go.

It's a place (or places) on your head where the hair kinda just grows in the opposite direction of the masses  .

I only plop for about 10 minutes - the time it takes me get dressed. Anything longer than that and it gets ugly fast! My thinner hair can get 'formed' to the plop and thats not good!

I think I'm gonna try 10 minutes today. I usually do it for 30 minutes but I want to shorten my routine time (my 4 year old will be starting preschool in a few weeks) and I'm hoping it'll keep my underside from getting straight.

I find plopping difficult, too. I removed the elastic from a cheap dollar store shower cap to get a pattern, laid it on an old t-shirt, cut it out and put elastic in it. Then I just bent over, put my hair in the t-shirt cap, made sure the hair was on top, and clipped the excess fabric in back so the hair wouldn't slide down my head. Seemed to work well. I think I need to cut back my plop time, though.

I like that idea! I have always thought a shower cap would be good for plopping!

I was dreaming of ordering products last night, and while on jessicurl's site, found this page

There is a demo called plunking. She illustrates, on video, how to plop. She made it look easy, and I see what I was doing wrong. Maybe this will help you.
