Heavy Moisturizer For Wiry, Springy Dry Hair?

drammy04drammy04 Posts: 42Registered Users
Well, my hair is doing better, but I still lack moisture. I think that my hair doesn't like oil or a lot of butter because it just sits on my hair and does nothing. My hair soaks up water based products a lot! Different combinations of [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink], IC gel, Garner Curls and Shine and moisturizers seem okay, but I haven't found a good moisturizer to layer underneath. I switch between Nairobi Leave In Conditioner and Paul Mitchell Humectress and I still cowash with V05 Tea Therapy almost daily. I want to order some samples but don't know where to go. I'm guessing that a heavier moisturizer will help with getting my hair soft and supple. The front of my hair looks okay but the back and sometimes the sides always looks fuzzy, matted and lacking moisture. I recently trimmed of about half of the colored ends, which really helped. Could I still have scab hair? Please help!

    Hi,

How many DTs do you do a week? I do a DT after cleansing my hair, and I do pretreatments overnight ( I wash my hair twice a week) before shampooing. I would really recommend that as it's improved my hair a great deal.

On most other nights, I apply a leave in, in small sections, like 20, and then put a *very small amount of butter over that to seal it in-I only use enough butter to make my fingertips shine on each section-you don't want to use too much of this type of stuff when you're on CG- conditioner alone will not be enough to cut through a whole load of butter.

These have helped in improving the moisture balance of my hair-but it does take time, sometimes months. And yes, if you feel the ends are rough/damaged, then it will only do your hair good to trim them off.

Oh and on wet hair, I use Paul Mitchell as a leave in. If I let my hair dry without product, I use Elasta QP Feels Like Silk as a leave in. This is supposed to be a gel, but it is very moisturizing to my hair, though that moisture needs to be sealed in. The light glaze of butter, 4 nights a week provides that. Since your hair seems to be like mine, and respond best to gel-based products, this might be helpful for you, too.

    HTH :D

Your hair is soaking up water because it's thirsty! Are you using a rinseout conditioner after the co-wash? That would help your hair get moisturized. The products you mentioned are stylers. Conditioners penetrate the hair. Even Humectress is more of a leave-in (and it has oils if I remember).

Also there's really no reason to co-wash daily; your hair should get clean with a water rinse and maybe a little rinse out to detangle. Less co-washing, maybe every other day and more contact with moisturizing conditioners. A moisturizing conditioner will give your hair more suppleness and misture - Trader Joe Nourish, [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Elucence-Moisture-Balancing-Conditioner-p-39.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=elucence-elucence-moisture-balancing-conditioner]Elucence MBC[/buylink], Robert Craig, Jessicurl TooShea or Weekly Deep treatment are good ones.

A good moisturizing yet cleansing conditioner is [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Blended-Beauty-Curl-Cleansing-Conditioner-p-373.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=blended-beauty-curl-cleansing-conditioner]Blended Beauty Curl cleansing conditioner[/buylink]. This and WEN cleansing conditioner I alternate between for co-washes. With these products I don't need a rinseout conditioner, they are so moisturizing.

Another thing that's been helping me lately is applying something like Afro Detangler (www.growafrohairlong.com) or Qhemet Biologics Olive Cream detangler to dry hair at night (twisting or braiding). In the morning hair is very soft and feels wonderful and the product is all absorbed. I undo twists, water rinse, leave-in and gel. Or you can twist out and go. (my twists suck, unfortunately. Other good products for this are Qhemet Honeybush hair tea soft gel. Karen's Body Beautiful has nice products too, I am told.

Is the Afro Detangler CG safe? Would you be able to list the ingredients?

Do you mean Nexxus Humectress? (I've never seen a PM Humectress.) If so, that's got a fair amount of mineral oil. Garnier is also cone-heavy. These products are not compatible w/ co-washing only. i'd stop using them because they're probably giving you build up and blocking moisture.

I'm not a 4A but I believe a lot of 4As really like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Curls milkshake[/buylink]. It is very conditioning (softening) and moisturizing. It can be used as a regular conditioner or a leave-in. You can get a small, inexpensive sample of this (and others at sistasplace.biz). Curl Junkie makes really good CG-friendly conditioners. And Regis Design Line Olive Oil conditioner (available at many salons and haircutting spots) is very good, too. DevaCurl One is good but contains a cone which would need to be shampooed out occasionally (sulfate-free will work).

Yeah, I meant Nexxus Humectress. I just bought the Suave version for co-washing. The moisturizers I've been using are Cantu Breakage Cure and shea butter. I used to use CD Hair Milk but I haven't in a while. I guess I'll try the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]MilkShake[/buylink] and the Qhemet Amla and Olive Balm. On her website she suggests the Sidr Tree for my type of hair (Fine 4a) Is it okay to use the Amla instead? Can I get both of them at Sista Place or Curl Mart? (trying to cut shipping costs) I just want my wash and gos and anytime I wear my hair out to look fully moisturized, without the top(ends) frizzy and without definition. Thanks for all your help guys!

I seriously would not use Nexxus Humecteress or the Suave version (Suave humectant conditioner has cones) to co-wash. It defeats the entire purpose and could be contributing to dryness in the long run. good luck. Sorry, I' don't know about Qhemet products; never used them or been to the site. You may need a tiny amount of gel after your leave in to combat frizziness. Maybe try diffusing?

You can get a Qhemet sample pack from the qhemet biologics site. I don't think Sistas Place carries it. ITA with Spiderlashes about those co-wash conditioners you're using -- just adding to your problems. Cantu has cones and is heavy. Shea butter is good for the hair in moderation. I cannot imaging using pure 100% shea butter on my hair except as a surface pomade.

I think all the Qhemet products work for any type of reasonably curly (3c and up), moisture-needing hair. Heavy Cream use in small doses.

ITA. I found less was more with the "No Oil" revolution we had here at NC a while back. I was sucked into for a long time thinking that I needed these heavy oils and butters for moisture. While I use oil now I do so sparingly and have less moisture issues than I did before.

Hi there, I saw that you use Cantu breakage cure as a moisturizer and I wanted to let you know that my experience with this product was not a good one....it caused a major hair setback because it is so protein heavy it caused my hair to break and shed (I was using daily). Have you tried Salerm 21, Elucence, or Giovanni direct....all three are great moisturizers. I love the alma heavy cream but it seems like she changed the formula so it doesn't have as much water making more oil based....so I wouldn't rely on that as moisturizer but it is a great oil to seal a moisturizer....I mainly use it on the ends of my hair. HTH

    this recipe is from spiralnc,

    flaxseed gel
    2 teaspoons whole flax seeds
    1 cup water
boil for 10 minutes or until it becomes snot-like (gooey but not thick). strain while still hot with a tea strainer.

    shealoe butter
    she gets it here http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com./product.asp?product_id=shealoe&searchflag=1

i just whip the shea butter, and add aloe vera gel until its light and fluffy. i also add ginseng miracle wonder 8 oil (cheap oil mixture with no mineral oil), i just eyeball.

then i mix equal parts flaxseed gel and shealoe butter.

here's the link to her recipe, hope she doesn't mind. i've been using this for the last couple of weeks, and i really like it.

    http://public.fotki.com/Spiral/hair-stuff/flaxseed-cream-how-/

some e.o. makes it smell good. i've also been adding a little leave-in conditoner to the mixture.
