Twisting: What Products To Use?

shellylbridgesshellylbridges Posts: 51Registered Users
Hey All,

I'm going to try TWISTING for the first time using my own natural hair. :)
I know there are SO many products out there?
What works for twisting?
What should I apply on the hair and at the ends so they do not unravel :?:

Thanks everyone :!:

i use Garnier Fructis soft curl cream or ic clear gel when i use products. i've also used right on curl activator moisturizer. But my hair tends to do better with less product. Sometimes i just use a leave in cond. and some type of oil. To keep the ends from unraveling i either use hair pins or small rollers that are used to make spiral curls. Before i bc'ed i used medium satin rollers on the ends.(My hair is about 4to5in. long right now) :)

I think anything that gives you moisture and hold is good enought. I've heard that Organic Root Stimulator's Lock and Twist Gel is good for twisting. My mom uses a twisting gel by Dark and Lovely. I usually use [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Miss-Jessies-Curly-Pudding-p-578.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=miss-jessies-curly-pudding]Miss Jessies Curly Pudding[/buylink] or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Miss-Jessies-Curly-Meringue-p-576.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=miss-jessies-curly-meringue]Curly Meringue[/buylink] or Blended Beauty's Styling Butter. In terms of the ends....I usually find that if I twist it wet, the ends stay together on their own.

i used the last of my [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]curls milkshake[/buylink] but finished with mhc island leave in, i misted with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Oyin-Handmade-Juices--Berries-p-757.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=oyin-juices-and-berries-nourishing-herbal-leavein]oyin juices and berries[/buylink] when my hair started drying out. for me i dont need hold so much so i go for a creamy leave in and then mist to keep it moist. i like to twist when my hair is damp but not soaking wet.

I twisted on dry hair overnight with Afro Detangler and my hair was so soft and moisturized this morning, with good "twist impressions". I haven't yet made twists that are ready for the public, but this is probably what I would use. ITA with Missmonie, any good product that imparts moisture and a little hold. Detangler doesn't hold but gives the hair enough moisture so the twists stay together.

I'm still transitioning, but i have sections of natural hair and i recently used [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Oyin-Handmade-Whipped-Pudding-p-353.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=oyin-whipped-pudding]oyin whipped pudding[/buylink] and it left the twists very soft and for more than two days(without spritzing in between) which is something i can never seem to get.

I don't think it has hold, so you might want to use something else if hold is what you're looking for. [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Blended-Beauty-Happy-Nappy-Styles-p-533.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=blended-beauty-happy-nappy-styles]Blended beauty happy nappy styles[/buylink] makes some nice firm(still moisturized) twists, i still prefer how oyin feels. but if i'm going for a twistout the hold in happy nappy is better suited.
ETA:and to keep twist together i usally leave a little bit of hair at the end and just twist it around my finger.

Depending on whether or not you want hold, a hair milk or lite gel will do.
The smaller the sections, the longer your twists will last.

    1. Carol's Daughter Hair Milk
    2. IC Fantasia [Blue] Gel for Color Treated & Damged hair
    3. Carol's Daughter Healthy hair Butter

My friend just twisted my hair with BYZSH which is a wax stix and a little bit of Dudley's curling wax which I think are super duper heavy and my hair looks much thinner than usual (b/c I usually get my hair twisted sans product). My hair looks very shiny though and people keep asking me do I have hair added. I'm concerned about buildup but we'll see. So far so good.

I recommend moisturizing and conditioning before twisting and then no product if you're twisting the hair dry, otherwise a combo of a light pomade and ecostyler (blue).

i twisted medium sized twists with the afro detangler and i LOVE it. i think this is the product i'll be using from now on. i used quite a bit but it's worth it...no build up but nice crinkly twistout. i mist with water and i use karen's boddy beautiful hair milk for refreshing each day.

I usually use Miss Jessie's Pudding and some Eco gel mixed in. Make sure to do a leave in conditioner first.

this is a nice product for twisting and I use alot too, but I feel like I'm feeding my hair. I do have to use a gel with it or else I get twist-out frizz (I have fine hair).

If you're going for softness, a good butter or hair milk, If you're going for a little more polish use a gel after applying your leave-in. And remember, the more twists you make, the longer it will hold up and look great!

    A few good Leave-ins
    1. Olive Oil
    2. Sheamoisture Sheabutter leave-in
    3. Pure (Unrefined) karite/Shea butter

    Popular Gels for twisting
    1. IC Fantasia [blue or clear]
    2. Eco Styler
    3. ORS Lock & Twist gel
'Goddess Hair & Skin Recipe Book' devotee 4life!

    Co-Wash: Aubrey O. HoneySuckleRose Cond.
    Poo: 1-2x ~monthly~ w/AO 'poo+Baking Soda
DT: Honey + any Aubrey Condish
    Leave-Ins: Sheamoisture / RJML Cactus / KBBmilk!
