HELP!!! I am 15 and already losing a TON of hair!!!

HELP!! I am only 15 years old, and I have naturally thick, curly, coarse hair, but i have a HUGE problem. I lose a TON of hair in the shower! It comes out in clumps! I am so scared I am going to go bald!! Ok, ok, that's a little bit of an exxageration, but I need input!! Does this happen to everbody with curly hair? Does it happen to everybody in general? How can I prevent this? All I do is comb through my hair with my fingers while I'm in the shower, and that is when I start to feel it all coming out. I dont brush it because that is what I have heard from all beauty stylists. PLEASE REPLY (hopefully before i'm bald....)!!![/b]

a ton of my hait comes out in the shower..thats the only time when i really run a comb through it. it seems like its a ton of hair because everyone's hair sheds naturally, but when you have curly hair, your hair sheds, but really doesnt fall to the floor or anything because it gets caught/entagled/what have you in the curls. if you had straight hair, when you shed itd just kind of slip right out and onto your shoulders/floor/bed/what have you because there are no curls to stop it. does that make any sense? if not, someone explain it better than me! :)

as long as your hair doesnt seem thinner anywhere or you dont have bald spots, your probably fine. when i used to wear my hair straight all the time, i had hair all over my floor from when i shed and now i dont have any. but i swear, when i come out my curls in the shower, it seems like i have enough hair to make a wig for someone!

I agree with subrock in that when they fall out during the day, they probably get stuck in there. So when I detangle in the shower (which is the only time I do it) I'm probably pulling out the hair that I would pull out normally plus some extras that were just hanging out in there.
I lose quite a bit too. I think it's just shocking because we see them all at once.
2b/3a, primarily use Jessicurl and DevaCurl products, Curls Hair Tea conditioner and various gels. I'm modified CG-ish since 5/04.

Another thing to remember is that as your hair gets longer, it looks like a lot more in the shower drain...

I lose a lot of hair in the shower too, I think it is normal, like everyone else said.

However, make sure that when you are combing through, you are not forcing your way through tangles and pulling out "live" hairs or breaking them off. I find if I am not careful when I comb my hair in the shower, or don't use enough conditioner to detangle it, I lose a lot more hair than when I coat my hair with conditioner and comb through gently.

i have shorter hair, and i used to shed a TON! when it was long? i could break vaccuums! hahahaa
i actually thought i had a thyroid condition for a while, got tested, and that came back negative...

then, i read curly girl, and started the curly girl routine. i don't shed HALF the hair that i used to, and my hair is healthier then ever.

so, i think you're moving in the right direction because you are becoming concious of it all! i don't think it's do much which product you use, but what is in the products you use.
for styling gel, i use suave professionals biolage firm hold gel (you should be able to buy it at walmart/walgreens/target). it has no alcohol and no silicones.
that's a step in the right direction for now!

let us know how it goes!!! :)

oh my goodness thank you so much you guys! It is so good to know that this is normal. hehe That makes a lot of sense now, that the stray hairs just get tangled in our hair. YAY! i am so relieved now! That was also smart how somebody said that the longer your hair is, the bigger the pile of hair looks (i have pretty long hair lol).Thank you SO much for your input!!

thanks for the help--what curly girl routine are you talking about though? is it on this website?

curly girl (or CG) is a routine where you don't use shampoo to wash your hair. you use conditioner that doesn't have silicones or alcohol to wash your scalp and to condition with.
the big thing is to use products without silicones or "cones" as you'll hear them called on this board.

here's the link to buy the book through curlmart. i found mine at borders.

but, i'm sure once you start reading around on this board, you will get the ideas of what people do! finding this board was definately a step in the right direction!
