Leave ins to replace Aveda Elixir

I'm looking for a replacement for Aveda Elixir as my leave-in. Has anyone used any of these and if so what did you think? I have a large bottle and a half left of the Aveda which should get me through a few months, but being hair obsessed I'm starting the search now. Especially since elixir is selling on Ebay for $60!!!

Sorry for the long post....If something has worked for you and it's not on this please, I would appreciate a recommendation (please give your hair type and whether it's fine, med, or coarse, thin or thick). Thanks!

I haven't tried anything on your list other than ABBA & Aveda.

You have my vote for ABBA Nourishing! It's not drying like Aveda Elixir was for me. It's not greasy. I think it's consistency is between Aveda & Elucence, so it's on the light side. I love it & wouldn't buy anything else at this point.

medussahair has tried this. I wonder if she'll chime in with her two cents about it.

By the way, where did you get the ingredients for the ABBA? The bottle I have contains different ingredients & definitely no silicones. :?

I've been using PM The Conditioner as a leave in the past 3 weeks or so and I've been really liking it. My hair seems healthier and less dry and frizzy since I've been using it even in the warmer weather. I haven't noticed any build up either and I only shampoo once a week with non-sulfate poo.
For me, it's been the only leave in I've ever been able to use that hasn't resulted in frizzy poofy hair. It comes in a big bottle and the directions recommend a pearl size amount so one bottle lasts a long time.
I have to say though that the texture and smell could be better. It's this funny blue color and although the smell doesn't linger they could stand to make it smell prettier.

Are you using the real PM or the generic? I have the generic and it does smell funny. But then so does Aveda Elixir.

I'm using PM atm and really like it, have also used the MOP one in the past and that was good too. Both nicely smoothing on my very frizz prone hair. Haven't used the Aveda though so can't actually compare.

    Hello

I've tried so many of the products on your list! Im a 3c with medium coarse, very thick hair.
Aveda elixir-left my hair hard and a little coated, but work well mixed with oil for updos
MOP leave in-pretty good definitioin and moisture. A little thicker than elucence. A good product, but not an Hg, but good to have in rotation

Beauty w/out cruelty leave in-I really like this. It worked on dry hair, which was a total first for me, and smoothed my hairline. On wet hair it gave me soft defined curls, and the smell is very nice. A keeper.

Bumble and bumble leave in-Gave me some hold and shiney hair and pretty good definition when I finger twirled it in. Felt a little coated and did not leave my hair that soft(which is a total must for me) but the curl definition was nice.

Mixed chicks-very coating and icky and plasticky. No good.
Abba Nourishing-great leave, shine, a teensly bit of hold. I was a little shocked to see these new ingredients also, I have the cone free formula. I really like the old one that I have. Good moisture, I used to use it almost every day, but I havent in awhile, I should though.

Generic-havent used in a year, but I liked it I think. Soft, fuffy curls. I liked the blue color and smell. I need to use my bottle up.

Hope this helped. I look for no hold in my products, so these all worked well for that. Well, the ones I gave good reviews for did anyway. I still have all of these except for the mixed chicks, and I have a decent size bottle of Bumble and bumble leave in for swap as well.
Super Thick corkscrews and waves. LOVE Elucence MBC, Giovanni 50/50 condish, Qhemet Products, V05 Calming Chamomile Tea Therapy condish, Jessicurl WDT. These are my official HG's that I love oh so much

I have the real PM. I'll have to check out the generic one. Are the ingredients the same? It's not so much that it smells bad. It's just got that weird "unscented" product smell to it. :? I guess since it's a leave in they don't want to make it too perfumey.

I succumbed to the lure of the hair supply place in the mall across from work. They have frikkin everything! I bought small sizes of PM the (genuine) conditioner, MOP leave in and Abba Nourishing leave-in (which looks like the cone-free formula). Very reasonable prices. The Abba seems very protein rich; don't know how that will go down with my porous hair. They also had Angell -- I couldn't resist it. (My name is SBB and I am a product whore  )

They also had Nexxus PhytoOrganics Luxxtress moisturizing leave-in that is CG and has sunscreen and seemed good (herb-y), but no small sizes. Can't find ingredients to post.

ETA: I also get 10% off everything with my card so that makes it even easier to go and pick up stuff. Especially when I went into another beauty supply today and they were selling Joiwhip for $16.99. The beauty supply around the corner sells it for $14.99 plus I get 10% off.

    Update:

So far I've tried real and generic PM the Conditioner, Abba Nourishing Leave-in. This morning I tried MOP Leave-in. Whoa Nelly!

I used 2 new things this morning, the MOP and Blended Beauty conditoning cleansing cream and lemon juice. (I'll do a separate review). I didn't rinsout condition since my hair was very moist from the BB. I figured I could comb through the leave in and well, leave it in.

So I put in like a quarter sized blob (I'm used to using palm fulls of Aveda and PM and a little less Abba and [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Curls Milkshake[/buylink]). Immediately it started to foam and detangle like a conditioner. I was dragging my fingers through my hair and I had no trouble detangling with a comb. But, I had to rinse most of it out it was so foamy. I ended up re-applying 2 tiny pea-sized bits mostly to my crown and that did the trick. My hair was soft and frizz free. So soft, I figured I could use Jane Carter Conditon & Sculpt and a little AOMM over without a crunch problem. I was right. the JC C&S blended well with the MOP and the AOMM squeezed out more water and acts as a soft seal/hold.

I'm under the dryer now and about to leave for work. I am very happy with this leave-in that can also double as a conditioner.

I bought the 2 oz size at a local place in the mall that sells hair products in the front and is a 2-chair salon in the back. If there's a Lords and Ladys in your mall they probably have it. Or any beauty supply store (not Sally's) or salon that sells product too. It's also available at drugstore.com and probably a lot of other places on line.

I want to use it a few more times before I say total yea or neah. It's really rich and detanglying though. I never tried detangling with PM or Abba or Aveda -- just didn't seem doable. Maybe I'll try.

I also have BWC leave-in on the way to try, RC leave in and John Masters Nerolie & Orange (I won a gift certificate otherwise I would be seriously broke by now). I think I have the Carol's Daugher coming in a swap too. So I'l be washing my hair a lot.

MOP update: I didn't get a 2nd day out of that combo, it went to frizz and my hair was very dry/crispy this morning (possibly from lemon juice). I think MOP softens my hair too much. It has benhetrimonium methosulfate pretty high in its ingredients and while that makes a superb detangler/conditioner, it doesn't make my hair less porous, which is what I want in a leave-in. I will use the rest as a rinseout.

In another post someone used JCCCS, Bleave-in and Angell in that order and said it worked well. So I tried it this morning. I Ojoned for 20 minutes then washed with WEN Fig (it got all the Ojon out). I started with the JCCS but my hair just sucked it up and it didn't feel good. So I switched to Abba Nourishing then Bleave In, then Angell. Hair is dry and looking great. Angell doesn't give that smooth feel that AO Mandarin Magic does, but it sure looks good.

I don't need JCCCS in this combo, just the Abba, Bleave-in and Angell. JCCCS isn't a leave-in anyway. Bleave-in is supposed to be a leave in but I can't use it on naked hair (too drying and volume reducing). But it goes on great over Abba.

When you say it doesn't make your hair less porous, do you mean that your hair still feels dry after applying the MOP? I thought moisturize = increased elasticity = reduced porosity??

Girl, help me out... my hair is sooo porous and seems like there is nothing I can do to alievate it  :x I desparately need something for these ends...

Denisemounie, I think your equation is correct for moisture. But I've come to think of my hair as a canvas. Before you start painting, you apply gesso as a primer so that the paint will sit on the canvas and "pop" rather than be absorbed into the texture of the canvas.

That's what I want for my stylers. I don't want styling gels and creams sinking to much into my hair to to make it hard and/or cause build-up. I want them more on the surface looking good. I use the leave-in to moisturize and as a primer and "filler".

But the MOP sort of "opened my pores" if you know what I mean. I don't know how else to explain it. The Aveda, PM and Abba smooth right in and get absorbed, and they also smooth the cuticle closed and provide a nice cushion for stylers. Feels like the MOP leaves it open.

Every head is different so this may work wonders for you.

Hmmm! I see what you mean. I think my hair shaft is left open too (which probably attributes to how rough my ends feel). I ususally rinse or co-wash my hair in the AM (which opens the shaft)... so i guess my hair just remains open... maybe I need to try a smoother! I going to the Aveda today to see if I can get some Elixr and try that over my leaveins!

so, what's your formula? leave-in, smoother, styler?

Thanks girl!!!! :P I'm realizing its so important to understand the biology of the hair... because all this product buying/ trial and error is NOT helping me :)

Aveda Elixir is discontinued hence this god-awful long thread and emptying my pockets to try leave-ins

In this order: Leave-in (which is also a smoother/filler) then hold styler. Since it's summer I may throw a smoother between them (like Jane Carter [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jane-Carter-Solution-Condition-and-Sculpt-p-159.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=the-jane-carter-solution-condition-sculpt]Condition & Sculpt[/buylink] or Bleave-in. Sometimes I'll scrunch a little castor oil on my ends after which makes for frizzy first day hair, but great second day hair. Can't win. Also my last cut was February, so talk about rough ends.

Leave-ins: Aveda Elixir, PM the Conditoner, Abba Nourishing, Robert Craig conditioner.
Hold styler - AOMM, Angell or CHE Humidity Defying Gel.

You just got cut didn't you? So your ends shouldn't be feeling rough. Hmm...

What's your routine? What combos/leave-ins have been working for you?

That's just it.. I haven't found THAT leave-in or combo. I've been using conditioners and avocado oil but they are not as effective. I went to Aveda and picked up the Light Elements smoother (new line) and the revitalizing mist (so I don't have to rewet my hair everyday)... I tried the smoother over the MHC and immediately noticed a difference. I think I've been leaving my cuticle open which makes my ends feels weird..

Yes, I did just get a cut... my ends were in REALLY bad shape. She didn't cut out all of the damage. I can still feel knots at the very tips of my hair strands. I've been dusting here and there so hopefully that will clear up most of that.

I also ordered the KBB Hair Milk and Hair creme from http://www.karensbodybeautiful.com/home/ . so, hopefully the milk can serve as my leave-in and then I will use the Aveda Light Elements to smooth and then add AO or LOTTA BODY (i really like the lotta body, provide light hold and dries soft) or scrunch in the KBB hair creme. I hope this will help.

Thank you for your help... I will try PM the Condish and Abba with the next paycheck
4a/4b... at this point, Henna has to be my friend, cause I've tried EVERYTHING else!!

Henna, Afro Detangler, KBB hair cream, Vitamin E oil, Qhemet AOHC, AND no more letting my hair dry curly... darn knots are driving me crazy!!:happy7:

I tried this today under AO Mandarin Magic. So far so good in air conditioning, but I haven't gone out in the 65%humidity/86 degree weather yet. We shall see. It's the heaviest of the leave-ins I've used so far.

ETA - It lasted pretty well. I put my hair in a puff during workout (it was hot in the club) then diffused the dampness at the neck and let it free again. Some frizz but not bad. Let's see what it looks like tomorrow. I'm thinking the Mixed Chicks may go well under Angell.

Update - it builds up pretty fast (4 days, one cowash). If you shampoo that shouldn't be a problem

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.

I tried BWC leave-in today under Naani Gel--that's a new gel for me. I know I shouldn't try 2 new things at once, but....The BWC is very, very promising. It felt good, didn't reduce my volume, defrizzed and defined. Then I put the Naani gel on and my hair started to look dull. Oh well.

So far, BWC leave-in and Abba are the top contenders.
