I have to do a required research paper for my MS....Last one...woo hooo! lol :)
I was thinking about something in the medical field, such as MRSA, since it has become quite common, but that might be too boring...
Anyone got some good, solid ideas for me?
I even considered the GP syndrome...lol
I want something different, but remotely interesting, since this will encompass the entire semester :o oy

Thanks for the input! [And to all the curlies who have helped me in the past]
[I promise this will be my last request for help...lol]bow.gif

I think MRSA could be very interesting. It is amazing how bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics and the problem is so prevalent. I honestly think that could be really good.

If not that, what other medical topics are you interested in? I really should be working on some of my own school work now but thinking about a topic for you could be quite interesting.

How about discrepancies (if any) between genders/race in heart attack treatment? Or cancer?

MRSA is a great topic. Or you could expand it to superbugs in general. Or inappropriate antibiotics use.

How specific does the paper have to be? I think expanding it, as mad scientist suggested, to general antibiotic-resistant bugs or the overusage of antibiotics would make really good paper topics.

That's random. My best friend and I just had huge MRSA infections on our legs. Mine is finally going away after about a month.

    All right, what's MRSA?

    Nevermind, I looked it up.

MDR-TB would be something timely and interesting.

What exactly is your field, Wile E? I'm sure I should probably already know, but I don't remember.

I get a daily email from the AMA summarizing new research and news in medicine, so I might be able to find some suggestions for topics that would be timely and interesting.

There's a squib about scientists who have altered the DNA of listeriosis to make it able to infect mice, which is a species the disease can't normally infect (sort of scary with the recent avian flu panic). There's another squib reporting preliminary findings that several workers who were exposed to the toxic dust at the WTC ground zero have developed rare blood cancers. There's another one talking about successful trials of a biodegradable stent that has been recently developed.

And that was just in today's email!

(Sorry if this double-posts, I was having some trouble submitting it.)

Po...I think I might do that b/c of what I came across while working the other day.
Joy...sounds fascinating! I work the the medical field...
    I'm not a doctor...
But, I play one on TV...lol

Those emails must be interesting. Can I register for that?

    Thanks everyone...keep 'em comin'!
I should find out starting Friday what the guidelines are. Not sure how the prof will approve the topics...

Thinking about MRSA there's another 'superbug' that's just infected my local hospital called C-Dif, C-difercial (I can't spell it, but i do know it's shortened to C-Dif). It's spread by spores and is pretty bad from what I've heard.
Fat does not make you fat. It's actually pretty important.

You have to be a member of AMA. I think they started sending them to me when I told them I didn't want to get the print version of JAMA anymore, at least for now. A small apartment plus no time to read meant that my living room was sort of becoming overrun with unread journals.

I can forward some of the emails to you, if you like.

    Dang it!
    Figures...
Interpersonal Relations or Job Satisfaction are the choices.
I have chosen IR..now what? lol
Anyone got any good topics ideas...she seems to be giving us lots of leeway here..ay yi yi...what have I gotten myself into?cry.gif
    I'm askeered

Ok, I was thinking something along the lines of how the internet has changed IR ...:dunno: We've got nc.com & online classes, email, etc.
    I'm so lost here...lol

    Or internet addiction?

    Or football fans?
The role of football in everyday life on an IR level, etc...I need to find something remotely interesting...lol
  • KateRobertsKateRoberts Registered Users Posts: 286
    Ouch! :(

How about IR relationships and porn? :dunno:

I can't remember what you're studying, so please disregard if this is something you already know, but there's a whole field dedicated to interpersonal com. A lot of my officemate are interpersonal com grad students. Anyway, there should be lots of research out there!

    Some ideas:
-fantasy football and relation to interpersonal com (I know there was a paper at our last conference about this - so you may be able to find some research)
-facebook/myspace/etc. social networking and impact on interpersonal communication, particularly amongst teens/college students
-if you want to focus on football - maybe interpersonal com amongst fans? i bet there's research out there on it

I majored in Communication with a concentration in Human Relations and wrote my senior thesis on the show Supernanny. I did a comparison of the communication techniques (both verbal and nonverbal) used by parents and Supernanny and measured them against the children's willingness to comply with discipline requests. It was actually a pretty interesting study.

badger...do you know anything about EBSCO?
We have to use that database for our sources & I detest it! I can never do a good search...
I did manage to find a couple of articles, but I need *at least* 10 good sources for starters...ay yi

Kate...I did contemplate something along those lines

bushy...sounds like a great paper! I love my HR classes & I've got one more Com to go...oy w/ this teacher I have now. She's very tough, but good. I'm just a glutton for punishment...lol

I started a paper this past winter on the maternal and infant mortality rates in other Westernized countries vs the U.S. and developing countries vs. the U.S. I haven't finished it and I probably won't even look at it again this year, but I'm so interested in the discrepancies. That's a really good topic!

Hmm... I never know which database is which. The way our school does it is all compiled into one area. I just checked and one of the databases I use a lot - Communications & Mass Media Complete (CMMC) is available through EBSCO. It's pretty easy to use. I just tried a bunch of different keywords along with the word "interpersonal" and got quite a few results. One that got a lot of results was "internet" and "interpersonal" - 4 pages of academic sources. It looks like several of them are studies of message boards - something that might be quite interesting to you! :)

I'll PM you citations for a few that looked particularly cool. (Can you tell I'm a communication geek?)

    Thank you!
The prof referred to CMM database index, but I can't seem to find it...grrr
