I still don't understand how spammers make money. Often times the emails are pure gibberish. Someone pays them to send out emails to a bunch of people?

    Spam is unsolicited advertsing.

The gibberish looking ones might be viruses and things like that.

The ones that look like gibberish contain links to advertising. It's a way of sneaking through the spam filters. Another trick they use is to embed the links in a page of text from some legitimate book or article. Sneaky creeps.

Lately I've been getting spammed by myself! Crazy, I know. My 'home' email has a pretty good 'junk' filter on it. 3 times in the last week there has been an email from MY address in there with some stupid spam content. My sister's email has done the same thing. WTF is that? How do they do that? Why is my email smart enough to not let that through?

    Why does spam work?
Simply put, spam continues to proliferate because it works. People click on spam.

A July 2006 New York Times article suggests that the top three most effective types of spam are:

    Pornography (5.6% click rate)
    Pharmaceuticals (0.02% click rate)
    Rolex watches (0.0075% click rate)

Spammers are contracted by real companies to send mass email. There is a real and growing community of contractors who can send out "spam" messages. Since sending email is free, such small percentages of returns are acceptable--even profitable. The spam industry thrives on unsuspecting individuals who impulsively click on something interesting in their inbox.

A recent scourge of spam at Yale has been offering "inside information" on investment opportunities. Effectiveness of investment-related spam is the focus of a new study, “Spam Works: Evidence From Stock Touts and Corresponding Market Activity,” by Laura L. Frieder, assistant professor of finance at Purdue University, and Jonathan L. Zittrain, professor of Internet governance and regulation at Oxford University.

Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA

...The study, to be released also found that 14 percent of spam recipients actually read messages to see what they say, and 4 percent of the recipients have bought something advertised through spam within the past year.

That happened with my old email address. I opened my inbox one day and find email to me from me. I was like "W IN THE F?" lol. I reported to my internet provider but I have no idea if they ever did anything about it.

I saw this somewhere..."may the fleas of all horses asses infect the arm pits of all spammers"

I went home this past Christmas and saw a huge beautiful new house that had been built. (SIX car garage no less) I found out it belongs to one of the top 10 spammers in the world. His wife and I are from the same town of about 5K people.

Soloway could face decades in prison, though prosecutors said they have not calculated what sentence range he might face.

Ok I hate spam as much as the next guy and if I don't know who sent it it doesn't even get opened. I think it should be controlled, but decades in prison? Murders, rapists, child molesters serve less time than that.

Decades in prison, not just for spamming..
Soloway was arrested Wednesday on charges of mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering. Prosecutors say Soloway has sent millions of junk e-mails since 2003 and continued even after Microsoft Corp. won a $7 million civil judgment against him in 2005 and the operator of a small Internet service provider in Oklahoma won a $10 million judgment.

These are all bad things too especialy the identity fraud. I think he definately needs to pay restitution to everyone he's harmed. Make him work at Taco Bell 16 hours a day for the rest of his life to pay back every penny, but to waste decades of jail space on him when there are other's who need it more to me is not right.

I just think it's ridiculous that some murderers and child molesters are out walking the street when they need to be in jail for decades and not neccessarily a spammer. But I don't control the system.

I doubt he does much of the time.

The government and computer security companies hire spammers. They want to know what the spammers know, fight fire with fire kind of thing. You can be a complete criminal and still come out ahead!

So anyway, how does a company go about hiring a spammer (the ones that haven't been caught)? Do spammers have resumes?!
