what gels are you all using?

midgimidgi Posts: 2,409Registered Users Curl Neophyte
I'm currently using Nexxus Exxtra Gel but yesterday, I smoothed it on over TooShea! and my hair felt DRRRRRRRRY! It dried it's normal crunchy-self but that was the first time my hair ever felt different after I applied it.

So like the subject reads: what gels are you all using?

I'm kind of looking for something with medium hold and a lot less crunch.
I just want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.

I'm using Aubrey Organics Mandarin Magic jelly - no crunch, good hold and hair feels great. Using over Aveda Elixir or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Milkshake[/buylink]. So far it's stood up to the New England heat (which is pretty whimpy compared to say, N. Carolina) but I'll give it the ultimate test next week in Vieques.

    Hi,

I also use IC Fantasia (pink). The pink is hard hold but not as bad as the Nexxus Exxtra gel which I have tried.

Potion 9 leave in Treatment can also be used as a gel.

Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel (for moisture and light hold)
Citre Shine Curl Booster (light-medium hold, and no cones)

I use the cheap LA looks gel, $3 for a huge bottle. hehe Ive used the pink, blue, but now I use the clear which is a "10" for hold, and supposedly gives you a wet look. Not really, but it works good enough.

CN just reminded me to get some aloe vera gel. I hope it will hydrate the ends a little.

Thanks everyone! Well, so far I've tried Fantasia IC.

At first, I tried it over a leave-in and it didn't mix well so I had to rinse it all out, but when I tried it on it's own and watered it down a bit (because it's so thick!) it worked very well. No crunch, and strangely (albeit lightly) moisturizing... :?:

I only bought a little sample size at CVS to try it out, so even if it didn't work I wouldn't feel the pressure to finish the whole tube, but I'm pretty impressed.

I think next I'll try AnGell, that Aubrey Organics jelly (that sounds like it smells great-- btw :) ) and the Aura Hypo since Sally's is right up the street from me. Wish me luck-- I may check back with the results!

Yeah, the IC gel is thick. I have some leftover from my straight days. I have watered it down and used it for touch-ups...but I havent tried it for styling yet. Thats one thing about the cheap gel, its already pretty watery.

Forgive the question, but when you guys say light hold, medium hold, strong hold are you referring to how long the gel holds up or the softness of your hair with the gel? :? As you can see I don't know much about gels.

    Hi,Chicki

That refers to how the hair feels after the gel dries. My definitions follow:
Light/Soft hold=very flexible, not stiff; hair is still pliable
Med. hold=a little stiff, hair doesn't move much
Strong hold=stiff, hair doesn't move at all

    Hope this helps!

Yesterday I bought Pantene Curl Scrunching gel, and used it this morning. My curls look OKAY, no more or less defined than with the cheap LA looks gel. Only time will tell if the anti-frizz and curl hold factors will work. Will report again later tonight!

Okay, Im back from church. The gel didnt define my curls that well, and my hair became bushy and there wasnt any shine. So the cheap gel works better than this $5 Pantene tube.

I just saw this question; sorry for the late reply. For my hair the AOMM is way better (I've tried both the Fantasia Clear and Blue). Ingredients are all natural and it definitely feels different than the ICF. The closest thing AOMM resembles physically is [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]Kinky Curly Curling custard[/buylink], but the AOMM performs much better IMO. The [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink], you use it "wrong" (whatever that means) and you can end up with hair pasted to scalp and neck, stringy jheri curl look, etc. I have used the AOMM in modest and generous amounts (usually over leave-ins) and it never let me down. It's a soft feeling gel when dry, but it gives me 2nd day hair. If I want hyper-defined curls and a "harder" hold, I use Jane Carter Conditon & Sculpt as a leave-in

Well, I finally got to try out AOMM and I have to say I think it's a contender. It sort of smells a little chemical-y because of the Ginkgo and Ginseng, but fortunately that smell goes away once it dries.

I love AOMM because it's about the only gel I've tried so far that lays over a leave-in without flaking or making those weird little white clumps in my hair. It's the consistency of extra-thick water and because of that, a little goes a long way. I have shorter hair and I use about a half-dollar sized amount for my whole head. It dries a little crunchy at my hairline just because my curls are so much shorter there, but the rest of my hair clumps beautifully with minimal to no crunch that Surburban just described as "soft."

AND my hair doesn't look dry or frizzy anymore! (yay!)
I think I love AOMM, actually...

I've been using Proclaim Curl and Wave Activator Gel for the past several years,it's the only gel that works in my hair, and it helps with shrinkage for me.I love the stuff, you can buy it at Sally's,I get the 32 ounce tub all the time.It will last in my hair long,I don't have to keep re-applying daily or wet my hair.HTH

Anything that says "wave activator" I run fast in the other direction. that's usually for peope with treated hair, like hawaain silky perms, and its supposed to "activate" the waves. Its greasy and heavy, and sure to cause build-up fast.

    Where can I get AOMM?

The Vitamin Shoppe usually has it in stock, Whole Foods carries AO line too. Either will order for you if it's not in stock. I think it's cheaper at the Vitimin Shoppe. You can also get on line at vitacost.com and drugstore.com

I tried the AOMM for the first time this morning. I like it! My hair is defined, soft, AND NOT producty-feeling :D I prefer it over the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink], which in my hair, gives beautiful-looking curls but I don't like touching them(a bit sticky and crunchy)
