I delivered a beautiful baby girl on december 12, 2003. Since then my hair has not been cooperating. I have 3a/3b type hair, but now, it's bone straight! *sigh*.

Has it happened to anyone here? is it temporary?

  • SweetCurlSweetCurl Posts: 6Registered Users
Congratulations on your new baby!!!! Is this your first? I'm expecting too but my due date is in March.

Okay, as for the hair, it is very very common for hair to change textures entirely, but most of the time it is temporary and u will go through the post partum shedding and your hair ought to return back to normal.

A friend of mine just recently gave birth to her son and her hair went from straight to wavy! :? But now she's shedding her hair and everything is going back to normal. So, don't worry about it too much!!

    HTH!!! :P

interesting... i'm gonna watch all the pregnant ladies' hair now haha

...2C-3A with a little 2A-ness in the back... why won't the back just switch over to 3A too? CURL, you hair! CURL like your friends! *sigh*

I hate to tell you this, but my mom went from a curly to straight after she had a baby. It was permanent for my mother, but it seems as though it is different for every woman. Only time will tell I guess....Best of Luck!

I had a baby 2.5 years ago and my curls have not returned!

I don't even know how to do my hair anymore! I got so frustrated, I cut it, and while better, I do miss my lovely curl. I am post-partum shedding like a fiend too. I feel like I may go bald!

And to think, I used to hate my curl as a child.....and my other child (a girl) hates hers. I try to tell her that this is just a phase and by the time she is a grown up, she'll be counting her blessings!

    Hang in there!

I had a baby 2 years ago and my curls have not returned either. I too do not know how to do my hair and cut it all off. My hair seems to be wavy and frizzy but not nearly as curly. I hate it!!! SOrry, I hope your hair goes back to normal for you.

I had the same problem. It took a while for the curls to return, but my hair has never been the same. It isn't as thick or as curly. I can't grow it long anymore because it looks stringy, so I normally wear it at my shoulders. I just had another baby three months ago so I got it cut shorter with lots of layers. My curls haven't disappeared like last time, but it's more wavy than curly. I suppose once my hormones get back to normal and I've stopped breastfeeding then my hair will start growing in normal again. It just takes a lot of time to notice the results.

My son is 17 months. Every since I became pregnant my hair has gotten more and more straight. I recently went through 3 miscarriages. Two weeks ago I had my hair cut and it's now straight! If I don't put a ton of products in my hair it's super frizzy but not curly at all! I too loved my curls and miss them. Now when I try to curl my hair it doesn't even hold the curl. In an hour it's all straight again!

My cousin who had type 4 curls went through the same. her curls haven't come back either, but she seems to like it.
I am loosing my curl as well. I believe it to be hormonal related, although I am not pregnant or have had a baby.
My hair used to be 3a. Now it is getting more of a loose wave and it seems softer and smother, but I still prefered my curls. I want them back! :(.

I found this thread so interesting...

I have four boys... the youngest is 18 months... and my hair never changed texture or shape at all during or after any of my pregnancies...

I still have the same wild curls I've always had!

I wonder why it didn't happen to me?

I think it is different for everyone. Before getting pregnant with my son I had shiny luscious, big locks all over. When I was pregnant it went almost straight like when I was a little girl and now I have sort of a combination of them all. My son is three now and this one straight patch just went curly again (thank God). Hormones are a trip sometimes

I am pregnant and my hair has gotten straighter (and frizzier) and seems to lack lustre..it is very dull looking. I wanna shave it.

Just found this thread. I am 9 mos. pregnant. My hair is suffering. It has grown very long but is less curly, more stringy, and frizzy. I do not like it. And now I have shedding to look forward to???

Are you sure that it's going to shed? My hair never shed. It stayed shiny and full but was more wavy than curly. It may not shed.

This is funny! My hair got more wavy after pregnancy. Hmm... I am liking the results and I am hoping that it gets more curly as I have more babies!

I'm in my first tri-mester, 40 years old and although it seems like my hair is growing fast (at least the hair on my dang legs are!!!) it is just so frizzy and icky (hair on my head). I almost had the brilliant idea of getting highlights put in but then somebody reminded me that it might be a disaster... oh yeah. Anyway, I'm really interested in all of these posts - would love to report that my hair was beautiful and lustrous during pregnancy but so far that doesn't seem to be the case. Post-partum shedding? Great! Maybe I'll break down and start looking for a cute short cut.

Thank God I'm not the only one with this problem. I wish I knew the answer, and when I find one I will let you all know. I used to have 2b/3a hair up until last year. The only thing I can think that would have caused this is maybe the birth control that I'm taking. I'm so sad that my hair just keeps getting straighter. I'm so envious of those girls who have the curly hair that i miss. It makes me want to cry.

Well, baby Kennedy is now almost 2 months old. My hair has gone back to normal. It is longer and back to being curly, wavy. I guess the hormones from her were messing my system up. Maybe this will give hope to some of you going through this. :)

I'm glad I read this. I had my son almost 14 months ago and my hair was very healthy. Then after I had him it went back to being dry. I was growing my hair out from a very short cut and my hair was very wavy and it got curly again. But lately it's been not so curly and I'm not sure if it's from a bad haircut (short layes) or from horomones. I guess I'm going to get it cut and find out. It's actually very soft and healthy the curls just seem to fall down after one day.

I am glad I found this too! I think my hair is starting to grow in straighter since I was pregnant. My daughter is now 5 months old and I am breastfeeding-so I still have different hormones running around. I hope it gets curly again! I know most of these posts are older-but I have a question! I thought curly hair was curly because of the shape of the hair follicle. So why do hormones play such a role in it? They don't change the shape of the follicle do they?

So glad to find others with the same experience. My hair was thick and lush and curly during pregnancy but stopped growing anywhere else on my body during this time. Post baby hair stayed thick but went almost straight, after i stopped breast feeding at 22 months it slowly returned to its curly state with a good hair cut. Hormones play with all our bits and pieces - were so blessed LOL:)

actually I've never been pregnant but I had the same experience with puberty- had soft wavy hair as a child, then mad crazy curls (like 3a or 3b) at age 11 and then somehow it started growing in straighter when I was about 16. I'd give ANYTHING to have my curls back even though its been years since I had them :-( Actually I was kinda hoping one day pregnancy might bring them back...
does anyone know which hormone is responsible for all the hair changes anyway?

With all of my pregnancies my hair changed. The curls usually got tighter when I was pregnant and loser again afterwards. But becasue I've been doing CG for a long time I've noticed my curls are tighter then I thought. I chop off a bunch before I have the baby because if you have a lot of long hair it can be heavy and cause you hair to break more and fall out more after having the baby (or so I've read).

With my first baby (i was relaxed) my hair grew like weed and was very healthy looking. I just BC'd on December 30th, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this baby will do for my natural hair. I'm hoping to see that wild growth like I did last time, but I have no clue if it will do anything to my texture.

I experienced the same thing. I gave birth for the last time just over 8 years ago. Before having kids, my hair was the most beautiful tightly wound ringlets. I LOVED it!! After giving birth it almost went completely straight and turned dark brown from my previous golden and auburn colored hair. I still have the brown hair and my hair is a combo of loose boticelli curls and waves. I'm still holding onto the dream that my curls will return, but as time keeps marching on I am starting to realize that it might not happen.

Wow! I'm finding this may answer some of my questions as to what on earth is going on with my curls! My hair has always been 3a. I miscarried at just past 3 months pregnant and my hair has been having a massive crisis ever since-totally limp, stringy and like 2a. I'm hoping its hormones and stress (my husband is in the Army and is also gone right now too)
I just want my curls back!

Wow! This happened to me too. I have four children, and with each pregnancy it has gotten curlier and curlier. It used to be straighter as a child, but never really straight, more wavy. Honestly, I like it better this way now that I know what to do with it.

I had 2 kids, 18 months apart, then a miscarriage 12 months later, each time I had hair fallout 3-4 months after the end of pregnancy. I have distinct layers of thickness in my hair, 6 or 8 inches apart- the first 8 inches is the thickest, the next 6 inches is thinner, so is the next, and the last is thin enough to need cutting off.
The texture changed each time, too. light curl-to-strong wave-to-tighter curl and back to my normal mixed texture with the latest PG. I wonder if the attendant kids will share the texture they made my hair during PG!
My Dr said it is because you stop shedding hair at usual during pregnancy, then post-partum, the hair you would have normally shed comes out all at once.
    Not sure about that one.

fun to hear everyone else's stories!
