CurlTalk

Is our society doomed? Curlies are getting nowhere.

There are still loads and loads of people who prefer the straight look to curly hair. I think the hair pics below are gorgeous (maybe not on me, lol) but many people may tend to disagree with me. I personally think that curly hair looks better than straight hair when properly cared for, but again, thanks to societal standards, that's pretty much bullcrap in everyone else's eyes.

Super-straight hair is the current fad, and like all fads it will come to an end. Actually if you look back in history, curls were prized for centuries. Just look at some old statues and paintings. Don't worry, curls will have their day in the spotlight again. :D

Don't let that get to you! I don't ever let the fascination with straightening hair bother me or break me. I'm a curly; God made me this way, and no one can make me change that. Some people may think that straight is it but believe me there are many women I know who have straight hair or wear it short who wish they had curls. A lot of people think that straight hair is 'sophisticated' on women, but there is nothing more sophisticated than a woman who is confident and happy with her appearance. :)

I think most the curl haters are jealous. Sure there's alot of people who say straighten, but for every straighten comment I hear 2 saying they wish they had curls. I don't think my son has had a day in his life where he didn't have one person express jealousy even on his worse hair days.

I really enjoy Jodi Picoult's books and her hair is gorgeous! She did a book signing at a local store, but a store clerk told me you need to arrive three hours early and get a numbered bracelet to get an autograph.

Hmmmm....I disagree with the line I quoted above.

I've noticed that over the past couple of years that more and more curly haired people/models are showing up in print ads, commercials, and other media.

In fact, this is the most acceptance and indeed promotion of curly hair I've ever seen. There are also more products available specifically for curly hair than ever before. This is a GREAT time to be a curly!!!

I think that now a lot of people are wearing there hair the way it is. That means less straight haired people are curling and less curly haired people are straightening. There are ALWAYS a few people who think straight hair is ideal, but thats just the subtle form of racism that we carry around.

I have noticed that for many African American women this is an excellent time to transfer from relaxed to natural

I once rang a salon where a former hairdresser worked. I phoned for an appointment and explained I had naturally curly hair, and would like it cut into some shape.
The girl who took the call flat out said to me "oh we dont really work with curly hair, we're more into cutting straight hair and colouring"

whilst i appreciate that they just didnt book me in and have a hack at it, but didnt I just feel like the lepar of the Hairdressing world!

Have you seen the new TresSemme commercial where the girl with frizzy curly hair comes in to have her hair fixed? She ends up with it straight. My husband even made the comment that he would have like to have seen it "fixed" curly.

I wonder how most men feel about curly hair. I had a guy tell me he was attracted to a girl that always had her hair straightened. When he saw her with her natural curly hair he said he didn't feel attracted anymore.

OMG I was watching that ad with my sister and at the beginning we were all excited and said, "I wonder what he'll do" and then he straightens her hair and we were so dissapointed.

    RCC-That picture is so cute.
My hair is a mix of 2b/3a and even a bit of 3b thrown in! I would call my hair wavycelli. It curls most when I leave it alone after wet scrunching. My hair has a spring factor of about 2 or 3 inches and has a very silky, medium texture.

I agree with another poster, who said that they thought that curly hair was becoming more in style. I think that this is especially true for women of color.

When I was growing up, on TV I never saw African-American actresses with natural or curly hair. The rarity was when Lisa Bonet had dreadlocks on "The Cosby Show". Now, it's more common too see women with Afros, curly hair, etc. on television and in print ads.

I think the fact that there are SO many new products for curly hair is proof that curly hair is becoming more mainstream. I think that over all the tendency of this society still leans towards straight hair, but I do feel that one day us curlies will be equally appreciated!
3B with some 3a. Fell off but am now back on the CG bandwagon and looking for my HG products.

I kind of agree with both sides of the issue. While I feel that there still is a "stigma" about curly hair among some out there, I also feel that I see more and more ads with curly haired women, esp. African American women wearing their hair natural.

And as far as guys liking curly or straight hair, my husband once commented that I get more "looks" from guys when my hair is curly.
Luckily he's not the jealous type!

RCC, thanks for posting the picture with Jodi Picoult. I think she's from my area (near Princeton, NJ) so the store would have been mobbed. I'm glad you got to meet her. I had just finished "Nineteen Minutes" a few days before the Virginia Tech shootings. I feel so badly for the families of the victims.

Yes, I just saw this commerical the other day too and it pissed me off! :x
Something about her looking like a "poodle" I think was said sometime during the commerical? Her hair looked really cute to me when it was curly, I didn't see a thing wrong with it. Why do they always have to use words like "out of control" "untamed" "unruly" "disaster" "unmangeable" when describing curly hair in these type of commericals ugh  .

I was so excited to see her! The Pittsburgh crowd was good sized. I got there about 90 minutes early so I was able to get a chair. I tried to give my chair up to an older gentleman, but he wouldn't let me because he thought a woman should have the chair even though i was probably a good 25 years younger than him. Ms. Picoult was very gracious and eas especially happy to chat with the curlies. She said that she liked seeing her hair around. :D

I did think of the book with the VT shootings. While the book does make one empathize with why someone could do this, it still boggles the mind
