Non-comedogenic products

I've always noticed that I break out the most along my hairline and on my back. I'm thinking that my hair products are the problem. Do any of you know of any non-comedogenic products? Also are these ingredients okay?

Silicones make me break out. Just a couple of days ago I discovered the new conditioner I was trying had a deceptively-named silicone. How did I discover this? I was breaking out around the sides of my face–hairline, temple, etc. Needless to say, I did damage control and the conditioner will be returned!

I don't think it's the silicones. I use lotion with dimethicone and it's no problem. I think its the Laureth-23 and Polyquaternium-4

Laureth-23 seems to irritate my skin.
Is that second one Herbal Essence Set Me Up? That stuff broke me out like craaaaazy.

Yeah, it is. :( It's so hard to let a HG go.

Yeah, that sucks. Of course even if it makes your hair look great, it's no good if it makes your skin bad. :(
That really looks like the most likely culprit though.

As a general rule, anything non-greasy or oil-free is generally non-comedogenic. However, here is a link to a database of comedogenic ingredients you may find useful:

If you can manage it, getting a facial twice a month will go a long way keeping your skin clear, especially along your hairline, if you are using products with comedogenic ingredients. To keep costs down, find a reputable cosmetology school near you and schedule one there: they are much cheaper and are performed under strict instructor supervision. My school charges $12 for a 45-minute plain facial with mask rather than the average of $40-$50 in a salon, and the esthetician students do a fabulous job.

    I'm experiencing the same problem!
I have been constantly breaking out on my forehead (where my bangs lay), on my temples, and on my upper jawline (in front of my ears) for the past 4 months. Incidentally, my hair touches these areas. I've ruled out makeup, lotions, diet and sleep. I wash my pillows regularly. I think Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel is the main cause because I started breaking out around the time I started using it. Oddly I was fine with HESMU which also has Laureth-23.

COCONUT OIL is a 4 out of 5 comedogenic product! I massage this into my scalp before showering, so it could be a culprit.

For a leave-in, I use Nature's Gate Hemp Nourishing Conditioner
Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Hemp Seed Oil, Stearalkonium Chloride, Butcher's Broom Root Extract, Elder Flower Extract, Milk Thistle Extract, Chrysanthemum Coccineum Flower Extract, Brazil Nut Seed Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Borage Seed Oil, Babass Seed Oil, Panthenol, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Butylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Caramel.

For gels, I use Aussie Aussome volume and AG:Recoil sometimes, and most often Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel.

Aussome Volume Ingredients: Water, Laureth-23, Polyquaternium-4, , Hedychium Coronarium Root Extract, Wild Cherry Bark Extract, Hops Extract, Hydroxyethycellulose, Benzyl Alcohol, Acrylates/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Copolymer, Aminomethyl Propanol, DMDM Hydantoin, Acrylates Copolymer, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Panthenol

AG:REcoil Ingredients: water/aqua/eau, polyquaternium-55, hydroxypropyl starch, cetyl alcohol, stearalkonium chloride, stearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, cetearyl alcohol, glycerin, corn starch modified, cetrimonium chloride, sage leaf extract, nettle extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, hops extract, rosemary leaf extract, melissa officinalis leaf extract, achillea millefolium extract, wild cherry bark extract, cymbopogon schoenanthus extract, calendula officinalis flower extract, sodium pca, polyquaternium-10, magnesium sulfate, silk amino acids, cocodimonium hydroxypropyl hydrolyzed keratin, panthenol, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, tetrasodium edta, parfum/ fragrance, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone.

HETT Ingredients: Water, PVP, Laureth 23, Lavandula Angustifolia Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract (Lavender), Jade Plant Extract, Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer, Triisopropanolamine, Carbomer, Methylparaben, DMDM Hydrantoin, PEG 12 Dimethicone, Propylparaben, Disodium EDTA

    RED = comedogenic

So I'm gonna guess that most gels have comedogenic ingredients in them. How can we keep our faces clear AND hair looking great then? Does anyone have HG gels that are low on comedogenes?

Well, coconut oil was the cause of my acne break outs... For sure. :*(
I stopped using it for a week and a half and my skin suddenly cleared up. Then I tried using it 2 days in a row and broke out again. Stopped, and again it cleared right up...you get the point. I haven't changed gels or other products in the process.

Coconut oil makes my hair AMAZING! Nothin' like it! Is there any close substitute I can try since I can't keep allowing my face to break out? :sad1: I need something that holds protein in my follicles, or maybe a scrunching gel that has protein? I already use Generic K-pak 1-2x a week. Any suggestions?

CurlyCowgirly -- I've heard the La Bella Lots of Curls Styling Gel has lots of protein in it...maybe you should give that a shot. I use it all the time and it even has a little too much protein for my coarse hair's liking. Maybe your hair would do well with it. It's around $2 in Walmart. HTH!
Type 2c/3a with lots of hair and a super sensitive scalp! Med/slightly coarse texture, low porosity and elasticity.

Do you have any product allergies/sensitivities, also it might be useful to check whether you have any dietary allergies/sensitivities, those could also cause some issues.
