Before & After Pictures

entipyentipy Posts: 126Registered Users
I'm not sure why, but something made me think some new-to-styling-with-gel-etc. curlies might want to see before and after pics.

So, I took some this morning! Click the link below and look at the April 17, 2007 pictures. They start in the fifth row down. There is a before and after shot of each view. (This is post-drying/diffusing but before scrunching out the crunch. Then after I'm completely done scrunching/spraying.)

I want your hair - its gorgeous. But I am glad to see that everyone has that weird baldspotty look when wet - I thought it was only me!

Thank you. Yeah, I think I have a few of the baldspotty things AFTER scrunching sometimes. LMAO

After seeing your hair - I am not sure I am a 3A at all. When my hair is wet it looks more wavy I think but after plopping/diffusing/scrunching it has more loopy curls - maybe I am forcing it to be 3A.

You have amazing hair. I love the cut! I especially love how the curls frame your face. How do you diffuse (upside down?) Please share your secret

    Wow. Compliments! Thanks, y'all. :D

As for diffusing, yes, I do it upside down - at least for the top, I do. For the sides and back, I kinda lean to the side and do it that way.

I have both a sock and bowl diffuser and use both on occasion, but I think the bowl type works best for me. I use a modified version of the pixiecurl method and let the bowl do the scrunching for me while drying. I've thought about shooting a video of the entire process, but I don't know. I try to move my hair around as little as possible while drying, but I *do* use high heat and high speed with a press of the cool button here and there.

Wow!!! you're curls are freakin'amazing!! so shiny and spirally, just how I want my hair!!! So, what products do you use ? Also, how long are your bangs ? in the last pics, they are more to the side. Earlier, they seemed shorter.I l absolutely love both looks!!

Thank you! I've always thought they could use more shine. I'm letting my hair grow out, so it was probably shorter in the earlier pics. The first couple of groups (two different dates, I think) were when I was doing Curly Girl. I've since switched and decided to try a more modified version.

I've been using Garnier Fructis Curl & Shine shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner. Plus I use any of the following gels: Herbal Essences Set Me Up, LA Looks Sport, or DEP Sport. My CG conditioners I still have on-hand are an assortment of Suave Naturals and VO5.

I do about 90% of my hair stuff flipped upside down. Today, I wet my hair, put VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream all in it, rinsed it out. Then I used about a dime-sized amount of SME gel and ran it all through, scrunched in another dime on the sides and back, then another dime in the front. After that, I flipped upright and using about a dime-sized amount of the C&S leave-in, I scrunched/arranged the back and sides. Then used another dime to scrunch/arrange the top (flipped and upright). After that, I blew dry using a bowl diffuser - high heat, high speed, partial pixiecurl method (where you put the bowl directly up against your head and let it dry - forms curls great), with a nice dose of the cool button here and there. After it was almost totally dry, I put on my makeup and clothes then scrunched my crunch out, set a curl or two here and there, and sprayed with John Frieda's Frizz Ease hairspray.

On most other days, I will wash and condition with the C&S products then repeat the same styling procedures as above - starting with the gel part. I will try to remember to take pictures on one of those days just for a good comparison between that and only using conditioner.

WOW!! Your curls look gorgeous! Do you also do your scrunching upside down after you're dry? Use any kind of product or anything in your hands while scrunching when dry? Please tell!

Again, thank you! Y'all are making me all blushy and my head's getting bigger,I think. LOL.
Do you also do your scrunching upside down after you're dry? Use any kind of product or anything in your hands while scrunching when dry?

I scrunch the sides and back upright then flip and scrunch the top upside down. I don't use any product in my hands when scrunching dry. Occasionally, I will over-scrunch, too, and end up with some less-defined curls and frizz.

Sorry to bug you with more questions, but are you upright or upside down when you're drying with high heat/high speed and using the partial pixie curl method? Seems like if I get too dry upside down, my curls get a little weird. That's why I'm asking - wondering if I'm doing too much drying upside down & maybe should be upright more?

You're not bugging me at all. Ask away!

I always do the TOP of my hair upside down. The sides and back I do from each side kinda leaning over that way. So, it's sorta like flipped but not completely. I will dry the top some then stand up and see how it's progressing to see if I need to do more pixiecurl drying or just hold the diffuser a few inches away from the curls.

Maybe I *should* make that video. lol. Knowing my luck, I'd shoot it on a really bad hair day. Besides, I can't find a way to keep the good video quality when converting the DVD format to a web-ready one. *sigh*

oooooh yay pics! Your hair turned out fab! My hair is all tiny and crisp (I call it spagetti head or ramen noodle hair) before I scrunch too. It looks so different!
Your hair is growing nicely and boy does it come out defined and shiny!

I decided to take some "end of the day" pictures yesterday, so they're posted on this page:

    /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fentipy%2Fsets%2F72157594546464041%2Fdetail%2F%3Fpage%3D2" class="Popup

Also, I took more pics this morning to show what difference there might be between product usage. Yesterday, I used VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries & Cream to clean, HE SME gel, GF C&S leave-in conditioner, and Frizz Ease hairspray. Today, I used the GF C&S shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, LA Looks gel, and Frizz Ease hairspray. Those pics are further down, dated April 18, 2007. My pictures from this morning are a little blurry. I was running late but wanted to see the difference between yesterday and today! Maybe I should smile more in the pics. :/

Still thinking about that video! LOL

    Thanks! :D

Y'all ever notice how non-curlies don't seem to appreciate our curls nearly as much as we do? I think it's because they don't realize how much it takes to get them to look even halfway decent!

I'm going to get my hair cut today. I'm trying to grow it out long, but the sides are off-balance with the rest of my hair, so I'm going to try and see how we should even it out, so it looks better as it grows. Wish me luck!

I went and got my hair cut today during lunch, and I asked her to fix it straight just for giggles. I've never seen it that way. Well, here is the result:

I'm surprised! I like it. Although, I'd never have the patience, I don't think, to fix it this way myself.

Entipy, I also have very fine hair and was curious which of the HE SMU gels you use. There's a spray gel and a more 'gel' gel. You look nice with straight hair but I love you with the curls!!!

    Hi ECCurly! Thanks! :)

I have both of the SMU gels. I use the regular gel now, but if I have to use the spray gel, I will pour it into my hands and use it that way. That's what I did before I got the regular gel. Occasionally, I have been known to spray some of the SMU spray gel into my hands then scrunch my hair during the final stages of fixing - or before blow drying.

I noticed you're using the GF C&S line. Are you liking the whole line? I'm always afraid cones in the shampoo will cancel out the shampoo cleansing the cones off from the last day. If that makes any sense.

Your hair looks great both days but boy you freaked me out with the straight pics. Don't do that! hehe joking, it straightens out really nice but your curls sure look playful and friendly and bouncy

Wait...WAIT...I'm confused...do most people that wear gel go for this crunchy curl effect once the hair is dry?? And then scrunch it until it's gone? I can definitely see how this works on shorter hair - but are those of you with long hair doing this too?

I have always been amazed at how many curlies on this board use gel (especially with names like 'rock hard gel' and 'super stiff gel' and 'dar-near-close-to-cement gel' :P ...I have always hated gels because of that exact reason - they made my hair all thin-curled and crunchy. (ha!) But maybe I have been misunderstanding the technique all along...

medusahair - LOL! No worries about the straight hair thing. It won't be happening again any time soon. TRUST me. :) Second, I'm liking the GF C&S line pretty darn well so far. Then again, it's shampoo and conditioner. I don't see a noticeable difference between curls with that and curls with other things. I, seriously, think - at least as far as I'm concerned - it's more in the styling methods than the products.

curlyniner - I would suppose most folks use gel for the lasting hold it probably offers over mousse or nothing. However, I haven't even tried mousse in quite awhile now, so I'm not sure. Scrunching out the crunch after it's dry seems to work very well for me, so it's a keeper. :)
  • medusahairmedusahair Posts: 3,515Registered Users
Mine is technique and products both but I did use the C&S conditioners all last summer. Great frizz control. I hadn't used the shampoo though.

curlyniner my hair isn't short at all and I use Gel. You just have to learn to let it dry then scrunch out the crunch. Jess has a video of the scrunching on her site (jessicurl.com)

Fabulous hair!! I love that cut on you - it suits you so well. And such pretty, shiny, well-defined curls. I also love the color. :)

Curlyniner - I also have long hair (approximately bra-strap length) and use gel. ALWAYS. God, my hair without gel is a bit scary. If I'm going to be in my apartment for awhile before I go out, I just diffuse a bit, wait for it to be completely dry, then scrunch the stringy ramen curls out. (And with certain gels, it's much worse than others.) I hate going out in public with the crunchy ramen hair, however, so if I'm leaving immediately, I diffuse probably to about 80-90%. That way I can scrunch shortly after leaving my apartment.

I use gel. It helps to keep the clumps together while drying. I then scrunch out the crunch when my hair is dry and I have spirally curls that actually keep their hold. Without it my hair falls in a couple of hours.
