"Relaxers are the best way of manageing afro hair"

I have very coarse, curly hair, which is pretty much afro. I understand that relaxers are the ticket if I want to get it under control… which one should I use?

Relaxers are the best way of manageing afro hair. They work by softening the hair to a point where it can be restructured into a straighter style. A Relaxer is a very diluted version of a depilatory - yes hair remover, so have it done professionally. If not you could have a disaster on your hands.

I'm offended by this on so many levels! :!: :x

First of all, why it it something that must be "managed?" It's not a mental disorder!

Secondly, why MUST you go to a professional to get it done? You can burn your scalp and fry your hair much more cheaply yourself!

Another example of how African hair is bad must be tamed into submission.

I'm sure nothing was meant by it but I agree with you, kdc. Curls and/or waves are a sense of empowerment and identity.

Did you see that there is anoither question, called "second day hair" from someone with wavy hair? She is given advice on how to get bouncy curls.

So some types of curls are better than others, apparently.

Afro-hair is demonized. It is "undesirable "and needs to be tamed/managed. Didn't you know? :x

Grrr........It's no wonder women fry their hair off in attempts to have so-called "good" hair. And even sadder that people think that using a relaxer will "fix" their hair. There is nothing to be "fixed" and many will come out in even worse shape because of the damaged caused.

It's not only AA hair ... I can't tell you how many manufacturers come into a cosmetology school with the message of "you can't 'control' ANY curly hair, especially in humidity, so don't even try ... just straighten it instead and gee whiz, we have just the products/straightening system for you to do it." Fries my ^%$# like you wouldn't believe :x

    A side question...

is "afro hair" considered a polite/proper term to use? I don't mean as in wearig an afro, but "afro hair" almost sounds like they are trying to make it not sound "right."

I saw a woman at work today with beautiful 4A curls. Great definition, and they looked very moisturized and well cared for. I complimented her on them. I thought she'd like the input because we all know we hear enough complaints about our choice to wear our hair curly. Oddly enough, she said something along the lines of "thanks! I've always wanted looser curls." I laughed and told her that I wanted tighter ones.

She didn't sound as if she was being derogatory about her own hair, just commenting.

That article mad me mad. Curls can be better "managed" by lots of things other than straightening.

Red Cel I've never heard anyone use this term really, so I can't imagine that I'd consider it a proper term, but I don't know if I'd consider it offensive either. Someone does use "afro curls" as a descriptor, so who knows.

I don't think it's a good adjective as it says very little actually about hair. Afro is a style (brushed out 3c-4b hair evenly clipped all around)

I dont really like the term afro americans...why not just say black americans or african americans? afro americans just doesnt make sense to me...i guess its supposed to be like "afrocentric" or something (btw afrocentric is also a pretty controversial word in terms of what that really means). Anyway, afro americans just reminds me of Michael Richards apology for his outburst at that comedy club.

That's just so ridiculous. What if every African American woman relaxed her hair? Are they trying to wipe out natural hair entirely?

That makes me mad also, I think all curly hair is beautiful. Uggh gosh it's so dumb how everyone thinks that the anwser to beautiful managed hair is "relaxing". Thank you very much, but I agree with that statement. ANYONE can ruin their hair, damage their scalp and possibly LOSE their hair for a lot cheaper by themselfs.

Idiots! I see people with straight hair everyday and I say "Oh she has nice hair" but then I see someone with curly/wavy hair and then I say "but she has better hair'' regardless if there a 2b or 4c!

    Appreciate ALL kinds of hair.
Even straighties. But there kinda boring..

I think it's a UK thing. Corrine Bailey Rae refers to her hair as "afro" hair -- as in african-descendant-type hair.

black people in other countries aren't "african american"

Using the name of the site, frying your hair to the point it could break off makes you "so feminine"?

Urgh! I thought it was quite amusing how they were talking about Type4/ Afro-hair and have a picture of a white girl with 3b hair next to it.
Fat does not make you fat. It's actually pretty important.
