Washing face with water only

Anyone ever tried this? My skin has been very dry lately so last night I just rinsed with water and didn't put any moisturizer on afterwards. This morning my skin seems more hydrated and softer. I think I was inspired to try this because I had read somewhere that moisturizers can inhibit your skin's own oil production and it's good to let your skin breathe free at night. Might have been on Dr. Haushuka's website.
I know this contradicts most conventional wisdom about skincare and products etc.

I know I saw a TV segment where it was recommended to wash your face with just water. But if I've worn makeup during the day I need a little assistance to take it off. (I use an Aveeno face bar).
Side note for you LA Wavy - I'd LOVE to live in Santa Monica, CA, even though it's more crowded now than it was in my youth.
No more PJ tendencies. Tigi Curls Rock Curl Amplifier is the best thing to make my curls rock all day! Next best are KCCC and Re:Coil +HE TT Gel.

I love living in Santa Monica. As a NYC transplant, having a bustling little city environment by the ocean is really heaven. I know longtime residents lament the increase in traffic, congestion etc. but I love the energy. Northern CA is definitely up there among ideal places to live as well!

in order to research my columns i read a LOT of stuff about skin care and i've NEVER seen this anywhere in my travels - and you should see the stacks of magazines and books i go through regularly!!!
your skin can breathe just fine with moisturizer on it. if you're concerned about "blocking" it somehow, use a very light moisturizer that sinks in quickly and easily. dryness actually causes your skin to produce more natural oils which could lead to breakouts. this is why i always tell teens with acne that they need to moisturize too.
granted, our "mature" skin produces less oil, but it's still going to do it...

UGH...moisturizers were the kiss of death to my young-acne-prone skin. Every drop of moisturizer that touched my face caused an extra set of pimples. What I needed was exfoliation, not moisture. I think the idea of moisturizing already oily skin is a huge load of BS that the cosmetic industry tries to convince us to do for their own financial gain.

you and i came into our teen years back when most moisturizers were heavy creams and lotions.
the options are much, MUCH wider these days!

I suffered with acne til I was 35...only 10 years ago. I still don't need moisturizer, at 45. I don't need it, because I've got oily skin to begin with. Why would I put pore-clogging gunk on my face when I don't need it?
As long as they don't strip their skin with harsh cleansers, young people don't need moisturizers. Young skin usually produces plenty of oil on its own.
My friend's dermatologist told him to try rinsing his skin with water several times a day and not washing with cleanser. His acne cleared up. Granted, my friend was a guy and didn't wear makeup. The doctor said makeup needs to be cleaned off.

so many people with acne use harsh cleansers and cleansing methods on their skin in the mistaken belief that it will help, when all it does is strip every bit of natural moisture from the skin and cause it to produce MORE oil to make up for what's missing.

You could try. I have oily skin and am acne prone and just water-washing would be a disaster for me. I need a cleanser to create some surfactant action to clean my face, but not so much that it strips me of all natural oils. It is a real balancing act.
Yup. Using moisturizer isn't a preemptive thing unless you get dry skin on a regular basis.
I revisited Dr.Hauschka's website and he does recommend not applying a heavy night cream so your skin can breathe free at night. Of course he has his own product he suggests using instead. I think his products are pricey, but pretty good. Again, you have to take every manufacturer's agenda with a grain of salt I suppose and figure out what works best for you.
Now I'm curious about the washing your hair with water only experiment that others have been discussing on boards...although, no one seems too happy with the results so far.
another question; do any of you use toner/astringent with this routine?
btw, i have combination skin with an oily forehead and nose, large pores on my nose, and ruddy cheeks.
politics is like me and my buddy going hippo hunting. we shoot a hippo and it falls on us. now, instead of using our joint effort of pushing the hippo off of us, we arue for 5 1/2 years on who's idea it was in the first place to go hippo hunting.
The moisturizers most people use are chock full of parabens, waxes, and various chemcials.
No wonder it clogs the skin. :P
Try using a natural essential oil blend. Contrary to popular belief, a well-made blend of oils will simply melt into your skin and not cause any breakouts. Try Saffron Rouge (saffronrouge.com) - they have a wide selection. I use Primavera Wild Rose capsules every night.
If a simple oil blend is too light, try Mountain Rose Herbs (mountainroseherbs.com). They have actual cremes that are a little thicker but still totally natural ingredients, no chemicals.

Left to its own devices, my T zone is an oil slick. While oil-free moisturizers didn't actually break me out, they didn't help reduce the production of oil either, and left me with scary greasy skin when I woke up in the morning! Oils don't seem to do me any favors either. As mentioned earlier, I think the key for most of us with oily skin is just to avoid harsh cleansers. As long as we don't completely strip them our natural oils should be all we need.

My cousin suffered with the most terrible acne as a teenager; it was really pitiful. She had pale skin, dark black curly hair (which was not considered the 'in' thing in the 70's), and bright red angry acne. After trying numerous different soaps, cremes and prescriptions, she went to a new doctor who told her to stop using soap and only rinse her face with water.
4 weeks later her skin was clear.
I never forgot the lesson and I have since then (30 years ago) I have not used soap on my face, whether I wear lots of makeup or none. I may see one zit a year (around that time of month) but it is a rarity. Im's getting older but it was only a couple of years ago when I got carded for buying beer when my 20 year old son was with me.
Soapless and CG and lovin' it!
I have been washing my face with water only since last June. It started as an experiment because I became frustrated with (presumably gentle) cleansers stripping and irritating my skin. When it seemed to work well for me, I just kept going with it. Now, it’s been almost a year!
This may not work for everyone, but I have normal to dry skin and I hardly ever wear makeup. I also live in a pretty dry climate (about 40 miles south of you in the OC). I have been diagnosed with mild rosacea, so my skin is very sensitive and prone to breakouts. For me, the simpler the routine (and the fewer the ingredients I use), the better. Less is more. Here is what I do:
1) At night, I rinse lightly with water and apply a 1% salicylic acid gel for exfoliation and breakout prevention.
2) In my morning shower, I rinse my face with water only and dry it off in the shower so that it does not stay wet during the shower. I read on the Skin Type Solution site that “prolonged water immersion” can be irritating for skin.
3) After my shower, I moisturize my face with a mixture of emu oil (just a tiny bit) and a hyaluronic acid serum boosted with antioxidants (Berry Beneficial Antioxidant Serum from Pure Skin Formulations).
4) Because sunscreens cause me to break out (rosacea, sensitive skin, etc.), I avoid the sun by wearing a broad-brimmed Tilley hat and/or carrying a UV-reflecting umbrella.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that water-washing has worked for me, but I know that everyone’s skin is different.

It sounds like my skin is very similar to yours. I would love to check out the emu oil and hyaluronic acid. I currently mix it up, moisturizing with almond oil, olive oil and coconut oil , but I have heard great things about emu oil as well -- any suggestions as to where I should buy these products? Thanks for the rec for the Tilley hat. I don't like Sunscreen much either.
So far the rinsing with water only has been going well, so I intend to keep it up.
Emu oil can vary greatly in quality depending on where you get it. Some of them SMELL or congeal...kinda gross. The best source for quality emu oil is LB processors. It never has a smell and quality is consistent. No congealing either. I use their Clear in the sumer, and Ultra in the winter:

I’m happy to hear that rinsing with water only is going well for you. It was a relief for me when I realized that I no longer had to buy cleansers.
Thanks to RCW for posting the source for emu oil. I had originally checked out the From Nature with Love Web site because I had heard that their prices for AEA certified, fully refined emu oil were the best, but they were out of stock at the time, so I ordered from LB processors. As RCW said, it is a great source. You just want to make sure that any emu oil you purchase is certified by the American Emu Association, but if you buy from LB processors, you won’t have to worry about that.
Yes, emu oil is supposed to have some great qualities. From the research I’ve done, it’s the closest fatty acid profile to human skin of any oil; it stimulates skin repair; it is healing to the skin barrier; is anti-inflammatory; is proven to heal wounds faster; and does not cause breakouts in those who are oily or acne prone. I also read that it can help those with rosacea, and I’m all for that. In fact, RCW was my inspiration for trying the emu oil/HA combo, so thanks, RCW!
I purchased my HA serum (both plain and boosted with antioxidants) from the Pure Skin Formulations site. The plain HA serum works well, but I find the Berry Beneficial Antioxidant Serum more moisturizing. (It smells yummy, too.)
Finally, thanks to geordiegirl for posting about her 30-year experience with water-washing. Now, I know that I can keep this going!

I totally agree. I eventually realized that my skin was freaking out w/ most DS stuff because of silicones, waxes, and preservatives. I don't use straight up oil but I do use a moisturizer what contains them in a fairly pure base.
"Oil free" isn't always the best way to go. I am somewhat acne prone and most oil free stuff breaks me out like a mofo yet once I came to terms with the fact that all oils are not created equal I got better results. Mineral oil is horrid but natural plant oils and extracts can do wonders.
It can be hard to find the right one that doesn't contain all the aforementioned things but I have managed to find a few. One I believe has been discontinued and the other I have to get from the health food store. It's Desert Essence something. I'll have to look. They had some that may be better that I'd love to try but this one works well and fits into my college budget. I'll check the exact name for you in a bit. It contains some plant extracts and oils but isn't greasy or suffocating.
I'll also check up on the name of the discontinued one because they do have a new formula out that is fairly close and I can still find the older formula at Ulta here. I'm sure it could be tracked down online as well. It contains a sunscreen and I light tint (that really doesn't even show) so I use it in the morning or before wearing make up and the other at night or when I need something soothing. It's also vegan and organic which is kinda cool.
