What did you do to your hair today? Week of Jan. 28

Yesterday I wanted to wash my hair, but I was lazy and not going anywhere.  So I just washed and conditioned, rinsed it all out and let it air dry.  Ugh...not a good look for me!  I wish I could do a quick and easy routine, but the more time I take with my wash routine, the better my hair looks.

What's up with your hair?

Used the Shea Moisture JBCO line. Shampoo, deep conditioned with the rinse out and used the leave in. Trying to use these products up since my hair doesn't like them anymore. One more wash should use them all up. Hair looks ok though. A little flat but first day hair.

So I was starting to feel like I was over moisturizing my hair.  Since I am looking to clarify more often I purchased a clarifying shampoo from my local co-op that had Quinoa protein mid way in the list.  Here are my lessons learned:

    1. Hair still hates protein.
    2. Clarifying with just lemon juice has not been cutting it
    3. Trying a new type of a product (first time using a clarifying shampoo) with an ingredient I knew my hair was likely going to hate (protein)  was dumb

My hair is bouncier than I can ever remember it, but I also lost a lot of clumping power.  I think I might try daily washes this week alternating between co-washing and low poo to speed up recovery from whatever that shampoo did to my hair.

Reason # 393 Why You Should Only Do One Thing Different at a Time That sulfate clarifying shampoo isn't the only different thing I did..... I've also been using less gel.  Since I've been putting more effort in working products in my hair, I've noticed that my hair is fine until I put in the gel.  Now I start getting white soapy residue as I work my gel in (another reason I am looking for a polyquat free gel).  It dries fine, but it made me think I should try less gel.  My hair is bouncier than normal, but lets less curly (I've been very facilitated with my bouncy waves).  And it's not holding curls very well into day 2.  I have no idea if its because I'm using less gel or because I freaked my hair out with the shampoo.  I'm still using less gel and my hair is getting better, so maybe it was the shampoo *shrugs*

Reason #125 Why I Don't Co-Wash I Co-Washed with my rinse out/leave in (Curl Junkie Smoothing Lotion Conditioner) yesterday thinking I need to get the build up off but I need to not dry it out more than I already did over the weekend. My hair was significantly weighed down.  My build up problem is on the strands, not the scalp.  I need something to clean them without needing to scrub them.

@tinksaysboo, was the product you used the Avalon Organics clarifying lemon shampoo? I used to use that but gave it up because of the quinoa. Quinoa protein gives my hair really weird frizz!

Last night was shampoo time. I used my usual poo and conditioner (Intelligent Nutrients Harmonic). My hair seemed a little limp, so I thought maybe it was time for protein, since it's been a couple of weeks...so for gel I used my Alaffia Beautiful Curls gel, which has some herbal extracts that act like protein. My hair turned out OK but not great. It's still a little limp. Maybe it's just the dew point. The last couple of days have had a high temp of around -16 degrees F, so the dew point is abysmally low!

@Therese1 it was!  I've seen other curlies discuss how their hair reacts differently to different type of proteins.

I pulled out an old bottle of Garnier Pure Clean gel since it's polyquat free.  Unfortunately there was a huge power outage this morning that started 10 seconds into blow drying (I thought I blew a fuse at first!).  I needed to get online for work so ventured out in the rain to bus into my office with wet hair.    The gel gave me a decent cast (not really great since I had to rock the cast in public), but regardless it doesn't air dry well do to the fact it takes soooo long to dry.  It's almost like I have to get the undefined frizz dried in it's cast as fast as possible or else it will some how  find it's way out

Edit: now that my hair is completely dried, I'm actually having a good hair day.   My only complaint is I feel I can't scrunch out all the crunch.  This happens often when I let my hair air dry.  Since I was strict CGM (no heat) when using this gel, I now want to try it with a diffuser!

Anyone else find it more difficult to SCOTC when air drying?

@tinksaysboo, I have to laugh that I knew which poo and condish that was! Lol I wonder if it is more difficult to SOTC after air drying because you don't have the benefit of the heat from the diffusing raising your hair cuticle, resulting in the hair "taking up" some of the gel. I remember one time someone not being able to SOTC all the way after air drying, and so she diffused her dry hair. She said it worked. Well, the gel I used on my hair (with the herbal extracts that act like protein) really did dry my hair out. I didn't have great first-day hair, and my usual refresh method for day 2 didn't work very well. So I ended up adding quite a bit more water and putting on quite a bit of leave-in (like maybe 1/2 tsp.). It was like magic! My hair looked so much better, and it wasn't even greasy, which is rare (usually when I use leave-in on refresh days, my hair looks greasy). Gotta heart protein and pseudoproteins.

I bought a new styling product!  I've been on a "product diet" for several months, but I caved and bought some Ecoslay Orange Marmalade that a bunch of people have been raving about.  But I really really need to clarify and deep condition, and I don't want to try too many new things all at once.  I want to make sure the clarifying solves the frizzy issues I've been having.  When I do a bunch of new stuff all at once, I never know what works and what doesn't.  So I'll have to wait on the OM.

I've given up trying to wear my hair curly during these frigid months in NYC, because I  absolutely must wear a tight wool beanie to stay warm and have to top that off with a hood on my down coat.  I tried :(  my curls get completely squashed and look frowsy and disheveled once I remove the beanie.  I've tried other hats and earmuffs but they don't keep me warm.  OK, I'll do wet sets until spring arrives!
    2/c Coarse hair med. density.
    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....
Every day is a gift :flower:
