What did you do to your hair today? Week of Jan. 1

Happy new year!  Do you have any hair goals for 2019?

I've recently realized I'm fairly happy with my hair every day.  It's not the curliest, it's not the most defined - but it's also not overly frizzy and the curls last all day.  I used to have days where I was ecstatic about how my hair looked, and other days (most days!) where I was almost embarrassed to be seen in public - or half and half days, where I was happy in the morning and then it all fell apart through the day.  I feel like I've reached a happy medium place - it looks pretty good every day, all day.  And I'm good with that!

I've come to the realization that my hair will never be truly curly, and it'll never be as full and thick as I'd like it.  So trying to get hair that looks like someone else's is just an exercise in frustration.  I think I've come to an acceptance that I do have good hair - it's just wavy instead of curly, and it can still look good even if its a bit thin.  But it's still good hair!

I don’t specifically have any hair goals. This spring I’m going to bleach my roots probably, though I’m not mad about my natural hair color. It’s just a flat ashy blonde but it has the same curl pattern as my bleached hair just at normal porosity instead of high.
I'm trying to get up the courage to cut it to my collar bone or shoulders. But in the meantime, I’m going to give myself diy devacuts, and i love the hair cut I did last week. Hopefully it looks good to other people too and I’m not fooling myself. However, straight it will probably look insane.
Yesterday, i just used my JOICO purple shampoo followed with JOICO k pak. I should have followed with an actual conditioner but didn’t. So my hair will probably be really dry after today. Styled with As I Am GroYogurt and SM Curl Enhancing smoothie. Soft waves today, but not sure how long it will last as it’s a bit too soft.

I am currently trying and LOVING The Mane Choice products! Someone on here mentioned them a few weeks ago and I checked them out. I've been using the

Leaves my high porosity, fine 2b/c hair nice and soft and moisturized. I'm going to continue to use it and see how it holds up over time. But I'm pleasantly surprised by the results so far!

I want to get control of refresh day.  They are such a hit or miss for me.   Today was a great refresh day.  Hopefully it's due to the BeautyCounter conditioner I used.   We will see how the next couple refresh days turn out.

Now that my hair is healthy and in a good place, I want to start dying my hair again.  Do you have any tips for dying curly hair while trying to stay as close to CGM as possible, @BrittanyM?

Depends on what color you want to go. Obviously, going platinum would be the most damaging, but going a few shades lighter the least and going darker can definitely be done damage free.
Definitely use a bond repairing product like Olaplex. Unfortunately outside of supposedly sketchy Amazon, only a professional can get these and they are pricy in bulk. If you see a curl specialist, they might do a color service too and have much experience with more fragile curly hair.
Stay away from box dyes. The dyes themselves are not bad, but unless you are within 2 shades of the desired lighter color and have medium or fine hair, you probably won't get a result you want. The reason I don't like them is because you have no control of the strength (I fried my delicate hair in high school because it was too strong for my hair) and they sometimes have metallic salts which will be a nightmare if you ever wanted to drastically change your hair.
If your hair is healthy and  virgin, you can do whatever you like. If you do have previous color, the type and color needs to be considered.
It just comes down to what you want and your options (some options like henna are damage free but are as permanent as it gets, black dye regardless of type should be treated the same as removing it is a nightmare). But there are demi and semi permanent for going darker. Permanent for lifting hair a few levels without bleach. And bleach and toner for going blonde.
As far as maintenance, curly girl products are gentle so will not strip color like sulfate shampoos. Just be sure to deep condition once a week. Throw in a couple of protein treatments. Cons will be probably more porous hair, perhaps more tangles, and retaining moisture. My hair pattern personally never changed, but my bleached hair is definitely more porous and loses moisture faster once dry but takes longer to dry.
It definitely can be done. I think a lot of people (and some professionals) just slap dye or bleach on their hair all willy nilly then complain that their hair is a disaster and completely damaged. But do know that some damage will always occur but there are options to diminish and mitigate.
The End, but out of curiosity, what are you envisioning?

My curly stylist actually specializes in color as well.  My mom is anti-box color and put horror stories in my head at a young age.  I am scared to crap to try one lol  I've been dying my hair almost consistently from 1998 until ~2 years ago... and my hair is naturally dark brown/black so bleach is almost always a must.  Hence finally giving up and getting a big chop done after 3 months CGM lol

I am thinking either going a dark purply reddish brown, which I've loved in the past or do something completely out of my comfort zone and get an oil slick done (I've never gone outside natural hair colors)

My biggest concern/hesitation is for the first time in my life my hair is truly healthy.  I am worried I will be back at square one if I dye my hair so trying to figure out what I can do to get my hair back to looking healthy once I dye.

Luckily what you want wouldn't require you to go all the way to platinum, but just to a comfortable level 8 or 9 for an oil slick. I like the deep purply red color, like mahogany? You might be able to get that color without bleach, perhaps with a permanent color, like redken or wella. I will say, coloring does give you a bit more volume and some grace with using too much product. If you have your stylist do it, you might be able to do it in a "highlight"/"babylight" fashion so you are only coloring bits rather than your whole head, but I have extremely limited knowledge on anything that isn't all over color. It is scary to dye hair after getting it healthy (I went CG in Oct 2015 and bleached my whole head in Mar 2016, there was some sweating. Haha)

I washed my hair yesterday. I clarified with a sulfate (Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo) because it has been a couple of weeks since I've done that, and I've been using a lot of styling products. My hair definitely felt cleaner afterward, but dry, so I did a DC with the Jessicurl Deep Conditioning Treatment.

I diffused my hair but did not SOTC since it was right before bed. I also left most of the clips in at the crown overnight. My hair didn't look so good in the morning. It's hard to deal with hair when you've just washed it at night. Since it's still got some moisture deep in the hair shaft, it seems to get kinks in it if I try to medusa clip or pineapple, but if I leave it down, I get other wonky stuff going on. Oh well!

I did my usual routine but tried using the sea salt spray again. Just like last time, it gave me some really nice curls, but my hair got dried out earlier than it should have (and I can't afford that with 20-degree dew points). So I'm going to save the sea salt spray for summers only. The salt actually seems to work quite well to absorb the excess humidity in the summer--my hair usually gets really limp in high humidity.

Oh my gosh, the dog is adorable (Really, those pics need a warning of cute dog ahead). You might be able to get that without bleach or at minimal bleaching. I'm not sure. I would talk with your stylist and see what she thinks, but I do like the color on you, but I also like your black hair too!

Thanks!  They are my babies Carmella (first pic) and Emmie (2nd)!

I am leaning toward an oil slick.  I've just always wanted to do something outside of the box like that.  And it looks so cool on curly hair!

I've never seen it on curly hair but that's really cool! It's like picture but with colors! The way I see it is it is hair. Yes it's important for confidence and all but it is there to have fun with. And you know how to treat your hair well so it's not like your hair will be breaking off at the root and you'll be bald because of it. I think the worst you would experience is perhaps more frizz and porous hair that may tangle more.
If you do change your hair, you will have to post photos!

I have reached a curly hair milestone!

I have finally found a routine that has left me with consistent great hair all around 3 wash days in a row AND good refresh days.  I've never been able to repeat a routine to the point where I have nothing to troubleshoot!

    My new (hopefully permanent) routine:

    1. Detangle with random conditioner (I have a lot from my co-wash days)
    2. Wash with JessiCurl Hair Cleansing Cream
    3. Condition with BeautyCounter Soft & Smooth Conditioner.  Finish shower.  Flip my head over, comb with wide tooth comb, squish to conditish.  Rinse out completely
    4. Quarter size of my rinse out as a leave in.  Scrunch.
    5. Dollop of JessieCurl Rockin Ringlets just to the bottom layer of hair around my neck and the right side of my hair. Scrunch
    6. Quarter size of Curl Junkie Spiral lotion all over
    7. 4 pumps of JessiCurl Spiralicious all over.  1 extra pump at nape of neck and right side
    8. Scrunch until no more excess water.
    9. Flip hair right side up, part, and finger comb.
    10. Pull up top layer and do small finger coils at nape of neck.  Put hair down and put small finger coils on right side.  Do "messy" finger coils for the top layer on the back and the left side
    11. Flip head back upside down and scrunch access water with a t-shirt.
    12. Flip head back right side up.  Re-part and keep scrunching until the t-shirt has hardly any water marks.
    13. Diffuse to about 70%.  Starting with hair at the name, moving to right side, then left.
    14. Flip head upside down and finish drying until 90%
    15. Let dry to 100% before SCOTC

Yay! Glad something is working! Do you think it was products or weather change that made it more difficult recently?
  • tinksaysbootinksaysboo Posts: 543Registered Users, Curl Ambassador Curl Virtuoso
I don't think things have been more difficult as it's more that I've been just on the brink of being "perfect" and it's been frustrating trying to crack that code.

My goal this year is to resist the urge to chop my hair off into a chin length bob. I have some trips planned this summer and it is just so much easier with long hair and I know I will be not happy if I have to deal with short hair. So I need to hide the scissors.

My goal this week was to just wash my hair! I have been down with the flu for 11 days (and by down I mean I have been in bed 15+ hours a day and haven't left the house but once).  Today I finally felt good enough to wash my hair. I put Olaplex #3 Hair Perfector on damp hair and left it in for 30 minutes, rinsed, added Olaplex #5 Conditioner, detangled, rinsed, add some Wen Winter Vanilla Mint (oh that smell is so good) to the ends, scrunched in some Sashapure  Curl Cream. It does feel good to have clean hair.

On my last wash day and refresh day today (I had a lot of frizz so I just completely rinsed my hair in the shower and re-styled), I've been experimenting with the Oyin hair dew leave in. I like the results but the application process has been a bit of a learning curve. It smells wonderful, but it has absolutely ZERO slip, which kind of threw me with a leave in conditioner. I end up having to use a lot more than I'm used to (my two favorite leave ins are As I Am and KCKT), but my hair feels moisturized and doesn't seem weighed down, so I'm not that unhappy about it. I haven't decided if I'll be re-purchasing or not.

I tried a new leave in yesterday, Curl Junkie's Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion. I've had a roller coaster of feelings about it.  It seemed frizzier than normal when wet.   Than after I SCOTC it looked good.  Than it looked frizzy again after a while.  But by the end of the day (which included some standing in damp cold weather) it looked pretty good  and seemed to retain moisture pretty well!

Not sure if it's the leave in or a fluke, but I woke up with really good hair!  I only had to refresh the back and my bangs with some water/leave-in/duffer do to loss of curls.   The sides were perfect though!  Just one or two spot checks and refreshed with some JessiCurl Awe Inspiring Spray.

I am trying to leave the refresh day halo alone because trying to fix that is what turns a good 2nd day to a bad 2nd day.

the whole flip flopping from looking frizzy to moisturized and then back is oddly not all that uncommon for me!  It's really frustrating.

So I bought a dry attached hair heating hat thing.  Every time I've tried using it it's given me squished looking hair. Today I tried putting my hair in it like a plop to dry.  Big mistake.  It made my curls crazy!

Since I plan on going into the office (cute guy  ), I am wearing my hair up, outside of errands, for the first time!    I kind of feel nervous. I'm  paranoid my hair looks disheveled.  But then again, it looks kind of cute.  I can't decide but it will have to do because it's really weird down and I am having through covering that pesky bald looking spot :(

About 3 weeks ago I got my hair cut shorter at collar length. Still my hair is pretty much the same length.

What I started doing with great results is when my hair is soaking wet I use a wide tooth comb and comb it back then shake my head and let it fall where it wants to fall. Then I get my cotton tee and give it one good scrunch all over.

The results I’ve been getting are pretty close to my profile picture. I prefer the more chunky wavy less curly look.
