How to air dry but still have volume in the roots

So lately I've been experimenting with how I style. For the curlies who prefer to air dry instead of diffuse, how do you prefer to get volume at your roots? I usually just have to wait until my hair is completely dry and then pick/fluff my hair out so my roots aren't plastered to my head, but I'm wondering if you all have a better way? I can't really see myself going to work with a bunch of clips at my roots, but I'm open to trying something new!

    I think I remember you saying plopping doesn't work?  (Sorry If I confused you with someone else!)

    Yes, that was me. Plopping also creates frizz for me. Scrunching also causes me to lose curl definition. I usually just rake products through my hair and then try not to touch until dry.

    When I get out of the shower, I use the end of a rat tail comb to pick the hair off my scalp.  I also sometimes add mousse to the roots at the top of my head.  I don't know how much those things will help without diffusing or clipping...my hair would just laugh and lay right down again.  You could try clipping just for a few minutes, and take them out before you leave the house.  Even a little bit will help.

    @Guide 65 I've never really tried mousse, but that's a great suggestion!
