Judge a Product By Its Ingredients, Not It's Name

I have two products that are labeled as two different things.  I took a closer look at the ingredients and it made me question how they are labeled. I have a couple questions for you all based just on the ingredients of the products

Product A
Aqua (Water), Decyl Polyglucose, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, C 12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, PEG 150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, *Coumarin, *Limonene
*These ingredients are naturally occurring active ingredients found in the essential oils used in some of our products.

Product B
Water (Aqua, Eau), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Coco-Betaine, PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Salvia Hispanica Seed Extract, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Nymphaea Lotus Flower Extract, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Fragrance (Parfum), PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Polyquaternium-10, Propylene Glycol, Polyquaternium-7, Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Aminomethyl Propanol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin

Questions

  1. Would you consider either of these a co-wash?
  2. Would you consider either of these a low poo?
  3. Which would you consider the "harsher" wash?
2c/3a | low porosity | fine/medium | low/medium density| protein,coconut, and green tea sensitive | Modified CGM

Low-Poo:  Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream
Sulfate Wash: Aveda Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo
Rinse Out Conditioner: DevalCurl One Condition
Leave-In Conditioner: Curl Junkie Smoothing Lotion
Deep Conditioner: DevaCurl Heaven In Hair
Curl Enhancer: Curl Junkie Spiral Lotion
Gel: Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel

    1. I think Product A would be a low-poo.
    2. I think Product B would be a co-wash.
    3. I think Product A would be a harsher product, even though it technically is sulfate free.

I say all this because Product A has 3 surfactants - Decyl Polyglucose, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine - while Product B only has 2 - Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Coco-Betaine. I also think that Decyl Polyglucose and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate are more harsh than Cocamidopropyl Betaine and/or Coco-Betaine. Also, Product B seems to have a lot more natural oils and moisturizing ingredients compared to Product A.

    1. Would you consider either of these a co-wash?
No, I personally would not due to the presence of surfactants in both.
    1. Would you consider either of these a low poo?
    I would consider both.
    1. Which would you consider the "harsher" wash?
I would consider product A to be harsher than B. A has more surfactants and b seems to have more mitigating conditioning agents.

I rather liked this "game". We should have a regular series of listing a random drugstore product ingredients vs a high end product of the same type, CG friendly or not. Ask people what they think the product is, as in shampoo, styler, gel,etc and ask which costs more. C'mon, naturally curly, make it happen.

    Thanks for playing @cnic216 & @BrittanyM!

Product A is JessiCurl's Hair Cleansing Cream. "Mild and moisturizing shampoo alternative".  This product is marketed as a co-wash and is typically on list for best co-washes.

Product B is DevaCurl's Low Poo. "mild-lathering cleanser".  The name says it all.  This product is never on a co-wash list.

Based on how each products are marketed (by themselves and by others such as NaturallyCurly.com) you would think Product B is more harsh than Product A.

Ooh. I've heard that the jessicurl acts like a shampoo rather than a cowash. I personally have only used cheap conditioner as a cowash followed by a good conditioner so I've never experienced a dedicated cowash. I do have the jessicul and look forward to using it one day.

@BrittanyM When I started, I was co-washing with cheap conditioner.  I then tried DevaCurl No Poo and found I needed to clarify more often (Later found out my hair was probably reacting to the protein) so I started using  Low Poo and my hair seemed to like it.  So then I thought I should use an actual co-wash which is why I switched to Jessicurl haha.  I feel dumb now.  I didn't even think to compare ingredients.  Lesson learned!

I am going to wash with Low Poo for a week (starting last night) then try co-washing with a NYMN I have for a week.  Maybe What I need is a No Poo/Low Poo routine.

Fun thread! Too bad that I missed the chance to play.

I wasn't sure what I would have answered. All I could see is that product B was quite a bit heavier than product A, much more conditioning.

@tinksaysboo, you might like the Jessicurl co-wash in humid weather. So maybe keep it to experiment?

@Therese1 I think I might make this weekly :) I have two others in mind!

I used 16 oz of the jessicurl in the summer and really loved it so bought 32 oz right before the weather changed!  It's going to be part of my routine some how haha
