My curls are over clumping

in Hair Type 3

This is a photo from several months ago, so my hair is a few inches longer now. My hair is 3b, low to medium density, fine/soft texture. I've been reading a lot about clumping curls so that it improves definition and reduces frizz, but my curls are wrapping around each other creating these tubes of hair. So I end losing definition and it makes my hair look flat, thinner, and lifeless. If I had more individual curls, then my hair could have more volume. I'm wondering if it's due to my haircut, how I'm styling, the products I use? I use a curl cream like devacurl super cream and sometimes use the devacurl gel - but my hair doesn't always like the gel. I've tried the devacurl volume foam and my hair doesn't really like that. Would like more suggestions!

Pretty curls, even if they're not quite what you want! It could be due to the cut. A curly stylist who cuts dry can cut curl by curl, and it would probably help separate those sections.
