Completely flat roots, but only when diffusing hair upside down

I can style my hair without diffusing upside down, but that leaves me with less defined curls. So generally i prefer to get my hair soaking wet, and diffuse upside down. Most of my curls get great definition and a lot of volume, but my roots just don't.. The first 2-3 cm of my hair lays completely flat along my scalp, so wherever my hair parts i get quite a large area that looks like I've been laying on it. I've tried clipping but haven't really had a lot of success, it doesn't seem to make much difference. Any tips on how to avoid this?

I would avoid putting conditioner on your roots.

Some people also say not to put gel on your roots if you have this problem, but I find that putting hard-hold gel on my roots actually is helpful, because it provides some stiffness, which can help keep the hair off the scalp.

I have this problem so much.  When I'm in the shower applying my products, I really work to get the roots off my hair.  I gently pull the hair away from the scalp, I insert my fingers at my forehead and slide them along the scalp to lift them up.  Then when I get out, I usually diffuse a little bit to get it just a little dry, then I work on the roots again - I use my fingernails (gently!) to sort of scratch the hair off my scalp, trying not to break up the clumps.  Then I add clips.  It's easier if the hair is semi-dry.

I've also been adding some mousse or foam to the roots, and it helps a little.  I really like the AG Cloud foam, but Deva Frizz Free Volumizing Foam might work too.
