I will be forever grateful to whoever helps me save my hair

Hi everyone,

Long story short, I went 1 year ago on a freeform dreads journey, I wasn't using any shampoo / soap, I was washing with just water and then drying in with a blowdryer at maximum heat and speed (smh). I decided 1 week ago to remove all the dreads that have formed, I wanted to see how my curls looked now that my hair was long... and my hair is RIDICULOUS. Look at the pics, is it even hair ? it looks like straw jesus christ rofl

I would imagine the lack of protein, and the exposure to heat from blow dryer caused my hair to turn out this way, but is it repairable? I can't even go to a specialist for a trim or whatever it's called

So I went ahead and googled my way out to the CGM, and what I want to do is, buy a deep conditioner (Devacurl deep sea), do it every week, and co-wash with Devacurl nopoo and condition with One Condition. Additionally style with Devacurl ultra defining gel once it "heals".

Do you think my hair can still be saved? is my plan of action good ? do you think that's protein craving ? THANK YOU SO MUCH PLEASE HELP ME !! :(

Welcome to CurlTalk!  I'm sure your hair can be improved.  It's just dry and in need of a little TLC!

I'm not sure all Deva is the way to go.  Almost every product of theirs has protein, so it might be too much.  Deep Sea once a week is good.  But to try get some non-protein products in there too.  A really good no-protein cowash is Long Hair Don't Care (you have order from Etsy).  You can use this as a leave-in conditioner too.  Then use Deva One Condition (with protein), and try to find a no-protein gel.

Watch out for too much stiffness and tangly-ness and breakage.  Some protein is good, too much is not.

I agree that the DevaCurl products may to too much protein.  You probably need moisture more than protein.  Camille Rose makes some really good products that are not protein heavy.  As I Am makes a popular co-wash too.  Garnier 1 Minute Masks can be used as a treatment or a leave-in.

You have beautiful hair!  I agree with other posters that more moisture is the way to go.  Do you use a leave in conditioner?  I like Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil leave in, though some people find their products heavy, and also Giovanni Direct Leave In.  If you weren't previously using any shampoo or soap, you may want to try a clarifying wash by using a shampoo with sulfates (but no silicones) to start with a clean slate.  See what you think about Deva products - I have tried a few and wasn't impressed, my hair didn't do well with them.  But I really like Shea Moisture and lots of people don't.  So it'll be a process of trial and error to see what works best for your hair.

Wow I just saw that my thread got confirmed by an admin, thank you guys so much for your answers !

As of now, I still don't use any product for my hair (except coconut oil), since there's no beauty stores where I live. Fortunately, I'm heading to France next week so I'm going to shop everything I need to start my journey :)

My hair tangles very easily, and lately I've been trying to finger detangle some areas, and the shedding is remarkable, but my hair is pretty thick so I don't worry too much about it even though I should lol

Also, I've noticed the presence of some split ends and areas that wont curl up even with some finger coiling manipulation, could the lack of protein be the cause? should I trim those areas ?

Also since you guys are concerned about the abundance of protein in Devacurl Products, I could maybe get the Melt Into Moisture mask instead of the Deep Sea one ? since the former is designed to give hair moisture rather than protein

The reason why I want to focus on one brand is because I'm overwhelmed and really don't know where to start, so getting many products from different brands is really confusing for me

Thank you again for you help

You might do just fine going with all Deva, especially to start.  I've heard great things about Melt into Moisture.  I think that would do well for you.  They also have a new detangler that will help get the tangles out.  Another brand to check out is Trepadora.  It's European, but I don't know what countries have it.  It'll be an expensive salon brand, but it's CG and I've heard good things about it.

Split ends should be cut off.  Your hair will be much better behaved without them.  You can ask a stylist to just cut the ends - it doesn't have to be a big chop.  The split ends don't have anything to do with protein or no protein - they're just damage hair and there is nothing that will "heal" them except to get rid of them.

    Thank you so much !

Now that I have some products in mind, I guess trial and error will determine my go-to products

I'm definitely copping that detangler, but I'm going to have to chose between the two masks though, can't afford both since I'm getting the shampoo and conditioner and gel as well, which one would you suggest ? is the stiffness and dryness due to lack of protein or lack of moisture?

At this point, I'd go with lack of moisture.  You can do some cheapo DIY protein treatments if you need them, but you can't really do a good DIY moisturizing conditioner.
