Can you have silky and cotton texture hair?

AneeshagreenAneeshagreen Posts: 21Registered Users, Curl Ambassador Curl Novice
Sorry I keep posting these in different categories, idk which one is the right one

I noticed a few weeks ago that when I wash my hair some parts absorb water while other parts don't. I also noticed that after the wash some parts of my hair have a silky and very shiny texture and the rest is cotten like and dry,  especially my roots, that is with no product in my hair. I want to say I'm low porosity but I'm sure and I believe Im a 3c/4a. Is there a way to get my whole head silky so those silky shiny parts don't look crazy in my hair

    Hey :)
If you post ingredients list for each product, I can try to help identify what might be drying .

I don't see a shampoo listed in the products above...are you co-washing? If so, the products you are using are building up on your hair, since they contain silicones. I would do a clarifying shampoo with a sulfate shampoo and see if that resets your hair.

I totally agree with @Therese1.  A clarifying shampoo is essential. Even if you don't use any silicones the heavy oils and butters can still cause buildup in some people.

Hmmm, then maybe you don't have build-up, since that shampoo uses SLS.

Some people do get build-up from polyquats (I am one such person), and they don't always come off with SLS. I would try clarifying with a shampoo that has C14-16 olefin sulfonate. Kinky-Curly Come Clean is one shampoo that is usually pretty readily available at Target.

Have you ever tried a regimen that is free from sulfates and silicones? Silicones adhere to the hair and do not let moisture in readily. Sulfate shampoos are generally required to remove the silicones, and sulfate shampoos are very drying over time. I would consider doing one last cleanse with your sulfate poo and then using only your silicone-free products (the SheaMoisture, OGX shea, and Aunt Jackie's) to see if that fixes the problem.

Another possibility is that at least some sections of your hair are protein sensitive. Too much protein can have a drying effect on hair. If you want to test out this theory, I would do a deep conditioning treatment with a conditioner that has no protein and then avoid protein-containing products. You would see a difference within two weeks if protein overload is an issue. Note that grain and bean extracts (soy extract, quinoa extract) are proteins.

Thank you I'll definitely try that stuff out! Also what does it mean when my hair is bumpy? I can take a strand of hair from my roots and slide it up and down and feel some kind of bumpy texture. Actually it's pretty much the top part of my head all together. It's not heat damage cause I haven't used heat in months, unless its from me walking to the mail box in 90 degree heat but I don't even check the mail box all the time

You may have naturally porous hair. I do. If I run my fingers from the bottom to the top of a strand, there's " bumps" throughout, but especially at the top where the roots are. Products containing protein help a lot.
