How can I solve the frizz on top??

Please help me figure out how to tame the frizz on top. I no-poo, condish, have tried a million creams and gels, plopping, not plopping, soaking wet hair, damp hair (scrunched with t-shirt), deep conditioning, protein treatment. I don’t like how squish to consist leaves the top of my head. I am 2b, low porosity, mixed textures. The picture doesn’t do it justice but there is a whole layer of frizzy, unclumped mess on the top layer of my hair

Maybe try spraying a bit of hairspray on your palms and rubbing them together and then smoothing down the hair on your canopy? I have personally just learned to live with the frizz.

I should clarify, they’re not little frizzies sticking up (well, I have those too) but these are like strands that just won’t stay clumped in or defined. But it’s like the whole top layer

It may be a bit of environmental damage.  It is the spot most likely to be exposed to the elements.  It may need a bit of extra moisture.  The tricky part is just getting that section treated.

My hair does the same thing and it is extremely frustrating.  I really don't know what to do about it.  I, like you, have tried so many different things

It's the same for me. I've tried oil (not pre-poo), and that helps smooth it down so it doesn't look so frizzy, but the strands themselves get that grainy feel. I initially thought it was damage since it's the top layer gets more exposure, but it happens all the way to the top. Even the hair that's only a few months old, and has been enjoying the CG treatment since it was "born" is affected.

Another strange thing is that when I had blunt bangs/fringe, that hair was silky smooth (while the rest wasn't)! Now that it's longer and I dry it to the side with the rest of the hair, it gets grainy too.

@LB61 has some good points. I would add that you can take a drop of oil and smooth over the frizz. Rub in on both of your palms and smooth down your hair, but do not press down onto you head. It will act as a serum of sorts. I like coconut oil or almond oil for this.
Ps if you do not follow the curly girl method, serums actually may solve your problem but they do contain a ton of silicones.

Are your products PH balanced? I always had frizz on top since I was a kid. Until I started using PH balanced products and add just a tiny bit more product there. I use Apple cider vinegar rinse which stops frizz through out my whole head. I then use aloe Vera juice/gel from my plant I have at home...but you can buy it in a bottle. I make it myself from the plant and put it in the fridge. I also use products with aloe Vera in them instead of silicones and this helps a lot. Hope this helps.

You know, this is something I've been wondering about.  There are so many low poos that a lot of people love, but they leave my hair feeling like straw.  The ingredients seem to be gentle, so I was wondering if it had something to do with the ph balance.  I wish I knew more about it.

Do you have that frizz when your hair is wet as well as dry? If so, maybe you could try scrunching your hair less. Sometimes a lot of scrunching causes frizz. Instead, you could scrunch each area of hair only once or twice, holding it for a few seconds before releasing. If you see frizz there before you start the drying process, I would put a bit of water in your hands and smooth down the frizz. (If the frizz is there when your hair is wet, it will also be there when your hair is dry.)

I used DevaCurl Supercream and Curl Keeper Original on hair when wet. I got very good results from that. On 3rd day I just dampen my hair a little, for Curl Keeper to reactivate, and it works great.

Hi all! First actual post here after a lot of lurking.
OP, you seem to take good care of your hair and have tried different things. Your hair also does look shiny and well-taken-care-of in the picture you shared. There are product recommendations above, and only one more thing comes to mind.  The primary difference between frizz/no frizz for me is quantity of product. I see this most clearly comparing what happens when I get my curly hair cut and styled in a specialist salon versus when I do the styling at home. Wow the folks at my salon pile on the product when the hair is wet (!!! lots!!!) in a way I just do not (In this case Deva Supercream or Styling Cream followed by Ultra Defining Gel). My halo from hell is quite different when I put more product than normal and take the time to ensure it is spread all over the hair strands--from "an extra inch of height" to "a little frizz, maybe"
2C/3A long hair with some 3C thrown in
    High Porosity, dense, coarse hair
I make my own protein masks

@Curledvines welcome to CurlTalk!  So glad you've de-lurked.

Great observation on the quantity of product having an impact!

I have the same problem no matter what I do, but I just recently got the living proof no frizz instant de-frizzer spray and I am a changed woman. It's not greasy or anything like that and actually gave me more defined curls while completely cutting my frizz on a humid day.
