Box braids on heat damaged hair?

I am trying to start the journey of transitioning out my heat damaged hair. Since I'm in college and so used to not having to do much to manage my hair, I wanted a low maintenance protective style that I could maintain without daily maintenance, so I was thinking of getting box braids in my hair, without extensions. My hair is about armpit length when straightened, so length isn't really an issue, but since my hair is so damaged, would the brains look thin or unshapely? And also, would it end up damaging my hair even more since it's so brittle and week? I don't really want to get extensions or a weave, but I also don't really know any other styles to try. I've had cornrows in my hair before, and they just don't suit me, and chopping all of my hair off wouldn't suit me either. Any advice?

No advice, just wanted to say hi and welcome to CurlTalk!  Hopefully someone will be along soon who knows more about box braids than I do.
