Are there any safe protective styles with hair extensions for short, fine-width natural hair?

It has been about six months since my third big chop and I am still uncomfortable when how my hair looks (length and texture). I have not had a trim since getting my TWA tapered and family members think I need to avoid getting it cut until it grows more. I moisturize my hair almost everyday and deep condition it at least once a week, though.  My longest part of my hair is 5 inches. I do not like having my hair short, but I thought it would be better to get rid of heat-trained/"straight-conditioned" hair immediately instead of transitioning for a long time. I have been considering getting bob braids (box braids at shoulder/collarbone length) or try other protective styles until my hair is long enough to wear medium/long twist out styles. But, I have read on different websites that protective styles that use hair extensions are not good for fine natural hair. I do not know my hair type (4b/4c, maybe...), but I was told by my recent hairstylist that my hair is fine with low porosity.

Are there any safe protective styles with hair extensions for short, fine-width natural hair? If not, can anyone recommend safe protective styles for fine (fine-width) natural hair or share any articles that provide recommendations?
