Is co-washing effective for actual dirt?

How well does co-washing get out sweat and dirt, etc. I'm a landscaper so I get a lot of sweat and dirt and other fun stuff in my hair pretty regularly. I've seen a lot of talk about how well it gets out oil but not other stuff. I'm currently using shea moisture shampoo and deep conditioner and I've found that just using conditioner works better, but things are slow right now so my hair isn't getting that dirty. Any thoughts?

I'm really not too sure.  Try using conditioner to wash your dirty hands.  I'm thinking if you scrub enough, it'll all come out.  But...soap works so much better, and faster.  If conditioner is working, stick with it.  But you might want to use the shampoo once a week, or even every other wash day, just to be sure your hair is getting a good cleaning.

My boyfriend has been a landscape contractor for 40 years, has long 3b hair, and has been co-washing for 6-7 years and it seems to work fine for him.
I also do landscape work on the side and have been co-washing for 13 years.

@jeepcurlygurl That's good to hear. Does he use any special kind of co-wash or just his regular conditioner. All I have is deep conditioner which I also use as a leave in.

He and I both use Suave Coconut and VO5 Kiwi Lime as our washing conditioners. I don't like a producty feel on my hair and I think too much product attracts dirt so I don't use a leave-in (neither does Chon). I do use LA Looks Sport Gel. It doesn't contain a lot of oils or glycerin and has no producty feel.

Thanks for the suggestions! My conditioner doesn't seem to make my hair feel weird but I am playing around with gel. I think I used too much the first time and not enough the second time. Hopefully third time's the charm!
