Well water and water softeners

My home is unfortunately on well water. My hair is a disaster 99% of the time.  I sometimes use an apple cider vinegar rinse to help loosen up the build up....but it stinks. I've been considering purchasing a water softener for a while now.  Does anyone have one? Just curious if it's worth it, what to expect on costs (replacing filters, packets, etc), and if they are hard/easy to maintain. I don't know anyone personally who has one so I'm curious. TIA

Hi @rubyloxx : I don't know about water softeners. But have you tried using citric acid rinse? I prefer this because it seems more effective (ACV didn't seem to help my hair, and just stank it up). The Sciency Hair blog recommends 1/16 t /cup distilled water. But I've done more. I do need a deep treatment afterwards to do this.

Have you tried a hard water shampoo?  Malibu has one, and also Ion, which you can find at Sally's.  I have the Malibu.  It's pretty harsh, but you might be able to use it just occasionally, and use a gentler shampoo or co-wash the rest of the time.

I had a water softener when I lived down South. They're wonderful for hard, mineral filled water, which also had a high iron content. We also had well water. IMHO, it was well worth the cost. It cut our soap consumption (for bodies, washing clothes, dishes, etc.) amazingly. I suspect it also "saved" our clothing. Hard water is very hard on fibers. I also went from having to clean sinks, tubs, etc., from every other day to once a week!

We have medium/hard water here and I've had well water and treated city water.  I've never had an issue with buildup so I can't really help with that but I will say that my hair absolutely hates softened water. Anytime I've ever gone on vacation and stayed in a hotel my hair was a wreck. Nothing would rinse out, no definition, dried out. I think most people like softened water so I'm probably in the minority but it's something you might want to try before the expense of a softener.
