Root curl and volume

I am having the toughest time getting root curl. It seems like my roots hate having product on them and nothing I do, plopping, clipping, diffusing, scrunching  can help me achieve either root volume or root curl. I het plenty of curl amd volume in the rest of my hair. Any suggestions? Am I going straight or something? I am thinking about trying the devafuser upside down.

Do you clip your roots while drying?  This helps me tremendously.  Along my part line, I use long duck bill clips on either side of the part.  I'll add a tutorial below.  And then I use regular clips all over the rest of my head, creating big lumps of hair.  Once the clips come out the lumps relax a bit, but some remains, giving me the look of volume.

And this is how I do my part line, except I use longer duck bill clips instead of bobby pins.

Also, everyone seems to just use clips on the top of their head, but I use them all over my scalp.  Wherever I want more volume, I add a clip.  Wherever my hair is clinging to my scalp, I add a clip.  I end up using about 15 regular size clips and 3 duck bill clips.

Maybe a protein treatment? Might need something heavy-duty like a full on gelatin treatment.

I do clip but should experiment more. Duck bill clips don't seem to hold anything up for me, I use the full size deva clips but  they make dents which i hate.

I have tried a few protein treatments but again I could expetiment more.

Have you tried the Sciency Hair Blog Vegetarian Protein treatment? I'm curious about this . But my hair doesn't like protein.

I only use the duck bill clips for the part line.  I catch a little hair from one side of the part and a little hair from the other side of the part.  It's ok if they flop over.  I also remove the clips when my hair is maybe 75% dry.  If I leave them until it's full dry, then the dents will stay forever.  Taking them out early lets the hair relax a little, and the dents aren't as noticeable.

If you don't have a center part you can flip it.  I part my hair on the right, but if I dry my hair with the part on my left, then flip it back it does add some volume.

@WavyKfromNJ I tried the opposite flip thing you talked about... I think that could work for me with practice. Right now im getting great volume in the front but the back is flat. Work in progress!
