Wearing a hat in freezing weather

I've given up wearing my curls during very cold weather because I have to wear a tight hat under a hood from a down coat and my curls get completely squashed.  I can't figure out any way around this.  With the wind child in NYC it's hopeless.  Thoughts?

I meant to post this in the general section.  Still find this new site confusing, but hopefully I'll get the hang of it.  Thanks for your comment, Rou. Hugs to you.

My 1st day hair will still look decent even after wearing a hat but after that I'm like Rou and just wear a pony or braid. I'd rather have warm ears than pretty hair in the winter. haha.

I will wear earmuffs instead of a hat on wash day, so as to preserve my curls, but by day 2, there's hardly any wave left because my hair is so dry and flat. So on days 2+ I either wear my hair in a ponytail or else straighten it, at which point I can wear a hat and not have to worry about what will happen to my hair.

Once I wear a hat, my curls are never the same.

I straighten mostly, so not a big deal. I did get a bun hat so have been using that lately and wearing it curly, piling it into a messy bun holds the curls ok.
